We have an 8 am flight out of HNL tomorrow, and Southwest is advising to arrive at least 3 hours early because of delays caused by construction at the baggage area.
This seems excessive. anyone have any recent experience?

I asked the same question concerning flying home from Kauai. 2 hours would have been more than enough.

Just remember there is the additional Agricultural Screening. Which i believe is done before you even check in with the airline.

That takes a couple of minutes. At least at OGG that's all it takes. What we have been doing is get curbside check in (again this is at OGG) and the porter takes our bags through ag check, and checks our bags and drops them for us. He hands us the baggage claim checks and we just need to go through Security.

No

does an airline or taxi service or ANYONE other than yourself have any motivation to give you a much more realistic time?
People (one of whom I travel with) listen to this stuff  You can always divide by 2, at a minimum

Ag inspection? a couple of minutes at OGG, less at HNL. Unless they're all on strike, who'd worry over this stuff?
I certainly wasn't worried. Especially since we have someone else (the curbside porter) put the bags through for us. :D

Yes. There is no line for this, you just put your bags on the ag scanner (similar to the TSA scanner when entering the terminals) right outside the check-in lobby, and you pick up your bags at the other end and proceed to check-in.
