I'm a foreigner and don't speak English very well. Please understand.

I own three HGVs.

If I make a reservation for someone I don't know

What will happen in the end if they find out?

I'm curious.

And will the HGV also check if I have received the money?

My friend said he went to Hawaii and they only asked him about his relationship with the owner.

In theory they will cancel a non home week reservation that is rented out for money.

In practice i don't believe they have an easy way to check on this unless you are making frequent guest reservations.

We frequently travel with friends, and usually book them their own units. I get guest certificates for our friends, and don't recall ever hearing that they were questioned. .

?????????? In general, it seems like a non-issue, and in practice even less of an issue. Let the renter know that if the reservation is cancelled at the last minute it is obviously he who will be most inconvenienced. So, if they ask (doubtful, but who knows), he should just say you're "college friends" or cousins. If you really want to nail it down, you & the renter get the same story in your head (like they do for undercover cops on cop shows).

I guess background info might help. You own three HGVs. How many times in the last 6 yrs have you stayed in a HGVC property for a week and how many times have you "had a guest" in one? If the answer is 0 & 18, could you have been flagged?

not that I think this could be a big issue, but it is very easy for the HGVC employees to see that you are there simultaneously with your guests. If somebody ALWAYS has guests and NEVER actually stays at a HGVC resort himself/herself, there may be an emerging crackdown on those owners.

While our reservations often don't perfectly align, there is always overlap. so it would be easy to decide I am not doing this for profit.

That said, i have yet to hear of anyone here on Tug or on any of the FB groups running into a problem with this.

It seems easy to determine if a person is renting by looking at ads on Redweek or Koala.

Casual bookings for friends should not be listed as ads.

Yeah, but looking and correlating takes resources and time. Still a reasonable amount of work.

Still, definitely a bad idea to advertise that way. Casual bookings for friends, even if a transaction were to occur, should be safe if not advertised in this way.

Cheers.

Thank you for your response. I don't think there's a problem, I was just wondering what happens if it's not a friend.

I'm new to the site, and I've seen posts from other timeshare owners saying they couldn't check in because their guest was a paid rental, so I was curious.

You might want to look at this thread for a discussion on the wording of the GC (guest certificate)

About a year ago, checked into 2 rooms 1@GW/1@Lagoon w/sister-in-law - neither was a HW booking. Front desk gave me the third degree on the second room. Luckily wife (owner) stepped in resolve the issue as both she and her sister had kept their maiden names on their ID.
The front desk is instructed to check but it is luck of the draw whether they check or not / enforce the rules.

I have checked into as many as 3 room before (many times) with never a question like that being asked. In fact, my next two stays (May and June), I have 3 rooms reserved at both places. I don't plan on getting GC (even though they don't cost me).
