Good morning. I was potentially looking at adding a Marriott Annual Platinum week to our vacation portfolio but had a couple questions. Apologies as my Marriott terminology may be a bit rough, but was curious if owning an annual week would allow an Owner to purchase nights or an entire week at other Marriott Vacation Club locations depending on availability within the internal reservation system (not sure if this is the "cash purchases" option mentioned in this forum) in addition to the annual week? For instance, you see a few nights available at a certain location and pay cash for an extended weekend trip without impacting your annual week. Last question - I assume you are not required to convert a week to abound points? Any help appreciated, thanks!

You can purchase stays at Marriott timeshare locations using cash only via the Marriott hotel site, not through the Marriott timeshare site.

Depending on your ownership level in the timeshare system, you are eligible for varying percentages of a discount on stays at timeshare properties booked using cash through the hotel site. Those discounts are not always available even if paid stays are available. The availability of nights for cash on the hotel site is completely separate from the availability of nights/weeks using your ownership via the timeshare reservation system.

Clear as mud, right?

Any resale week won't be eligible to enroll in Abound unless you spend an abundant amount of money to buy Trust points directly from MVC. Think tens of thousands of dollars. So you won't even be able to convert your resale week to Abound Club Points if you wanted to.

Within Interval International, there are cash based stays called Getaways and ShortStay Getaways. Getaways are week long reservations at many different resorts. Think places and times with a lot of oversupply and low demand (Orlando, Vegas, Carolinas in the winter). ShortStay getaways are similar except they are for 1-6 nights. Availability in ShortStay getaways is usually even less than regular Getaways.

Thank you both for the responses. I do have a II membership so familiar with options there. I was trying to determine if there was something similar to Worldmark's "bonus time" or "inventory specials" within Marriott Vacation Club. It sounds like there may be an option but it is through the "hotel site" vs the weeks vacation ownership site.

Yeah, no true Bonus time like Worldmark or HGVC Open Season. Rates on Marriott.com are closer to regular hotel rates and not a real discount.

Depending on the locations you are considering, HGVC may be a better fit for you. All deeded weeks (even those purchased resale) convey HGVC points that allow you to book a week at your resort/villa/season at 12 months or (almost) any HGVC resort/villa/season for however many nights at 9 months. In addition, there is an Open Season at 60 days for making (somewhat) discounted cash reservations where/when you can snap up previously unreserved inventory.

Another possibility is Vistana which (while purchased by Marriott Vacations Worldwide) continues to operate differently than MVC. If you buy at one of the five Mandatory resorts, you can book a week at your resort/villa/season at 12 months or book into any other Vistana resort at 8 months.

That said, the upside to the relative lack of options when you purchase a resale MVC week is that they are for the most part comparatively inexpensive.

Thank you for the responses. And yeah, I thought the MVC week I was looking at seemed fairly reasonable, decent maintenance fees & would be a good week to use or trade in II - potentially splitting off the 2BD Lockoff even.
