Marriott refusing to let me authorise someone on my account

I want to authorise a 3rd party on my Marriott account and I have emailed owner services in Cork a few months ago, and tried again this week, I am getting the same reply which in my opinion is utter nonsense......

Does anyone have any recollection of anything being in our contracts or access to any policy/procedures that say this is prohibited or allowed? I know many people that have been allowed put this in place.

With your account, we will not be able to assist anyone who is not listed as an Owner. For security reasons, we can only allow people who are listed as Owners to transact on your account. My apologies for any inconvenience.
On an account, there can only be 1 Primary and 1 Secondary Owner. As such, if you wish to add a new Owner, you would need to remove an Owner from your account.

You didn't give any context to why would even want to do something like that?

I'm always concerned that security is too lax (no security word via phone, no 2FA online) so this seems like a perfectly sound policy to me.

They did say they don't allow it "with your account". Perhaps there are other types of accounts (corporate?) where it's allowed.

It closes the loophole for the annual 20k points received transfer limit that MVC have put in place, so makes large scale 3rd party activity more difficult.
I suspect this is the case. There are a number of large point brokers out there who rent reservations and then make reservations on the owners behalf. I know some request your MVC login credentials and make reservations directly online. Though I am sure there are situations where they may need to call in for things that can't be done online.

OP, Are you trying to rent points through a broker?

My brother uses alot of my points (and pays towards my MF) as I use mainly getaways. But it's a pain for me to have to handle it all, want him to be able to call up and sort it out himself. I pay approximately 15k in MF each year and am getting fed up with them putting more and more restrictions all the time.

I'd just give him your sign on so he can work online and by email. I know there are owners here with more than 2 people on deeds, I wonder if they've had the same issue. Since I'm planning to add my adult children to our deeds eventually, it'd be good info for my situation if only 2 owners can be listed as managing entities since I'm the primary in MVC's eyes but Kim's Bonvoy number is the one listed. I'm assuming this requirement would cause a problem for me in that we'd either need to change the primary or the Bonvoy # to add even one of the kids. Changing primary requires more than just one email or phone call. I know DVC requires a PRIMARY owner to be listed and they have the trump card if there are any discrepancies. DVC also allows people to designated an associate who is not a member but can call if needed but refused to talk to third parties like independent exchange companies or rental companies. Bluegreen only allows one online access but all owners can call.

Only a suggestion - but I prefer keeping a tight grip on access to our Marriott accounts. I would also welcome an inquiry if there is any apprehension on the part of MVC over unauthorized access. Just think about the damage that could be done in making or cancelling reservations.

Only my view.....

I actually had a response on that -

Set him up as a co-owner on a small portion of your points/weeks and then you can transfer up-to 20k points to his MVC account as you want per year.

I read your info above saying that but was wondering how it would work in my situation as I described. I'm also wondering if there's something different about where you are or some other issue as I would think this would have come up before if this limitation was across the board.

Our children are “Additional Names” on our weeks ownerships where permitted (not Grand Chateau we were told - is this a State or US wide restriction?)
This does not give them the full benefits we have as Primary and Secondary owners though.

If this is a new policy, I would blame those who abuse the system for commercial purposes rather than MVC. It appears they have heard the complaints about lack of prime weeks availability and are doing what they can to make a better ownership experience for everyone.

Oh thats interesting I didnt know we could do that, do you list all children on each week, or like one child on each week?

Both of our children are listed on each week, but we did that when originally buying those weeks.
I would have to check the actual agreements to confirm what specifically this does / doesn’t mean for them, but we are in Son Antem now so I can’t do that until we return home.

Both of my children are listen on my two SW weeks. When I die, I plan on giving each child one of the weeks that they can then add their spouse's name to the deed. They each own a Marriott week, so this will give them 2 weeks and they can reserve their weeks 13 months in advance.

Unless I misunderstand, with weeks' ownerships, 13 month reservations only apply when you are making multiple weeks reservations for the same resort at the same time. It can either be two back to back weeks, or two simultaneous weeks.

So it only works if you own two or more weeks at the same property and want to book 2+ weeks at that property.

Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong.

That is not correct, It Does not have to be same resort.

it just has to be concurrent or consecutive weeks for resort(s) you own in the season(s) you own, it does not have to be the same resort.

Wow...this takes me back. Over a decade ago there was 'extensive discussion' on TUG about this issue. A straightforward reading of the docs of some MVC resorts says that the weeks have to be booked at the resort...but MVC in its infinite wisdom decided that they can be booked at any resort.

Since MVC controls the reservation process their opinion won.

You're wrong. :)

The Weeks 13-mos window can be used to book consecutive/concurrent reservations across multiple resorts. From our earliest ownership I've used the 13-mos window to book consecutive SurfWatch (Platinum and Gold) and Barony (Gold) weeks on the calendar, in whatever combination worked to book three consecutive calendar weeks straddling either the Memorial Day or Labor Day holidays.

Any combination of multiple Weeks, or multiple lock-off components from multiple Weeks, can be used as long as there's availability.

The difference is that it's only the documents of some of the older resorts that have the language limiting 13-mos window usage to the same resort. For example, the Barony docs contain the wording but the SurfWatch docs don't. If they were to enforce it to only same-resort usage, the people who own at the newer resorts would have just cause to claim that Marriott is in violation of the docs. So as with some other issues, based on the doc language that gives Marriott extensive leeway in its management along with Marriott's policy of enforcing the same set of rules across the entire portfolio of resorts, Marriott enforces the rule in such a way that fewer owners can mount a winnable legal challenge. They're effectively enforcing it to give all multi-Weeks owners the access, as opposed to withholding it from only some. :)
