FDA rules that ingredient in Benadryl and Sudafed from pharmacy shelves doesn't work

  • Phenylephrine is everywhere and every nasal decongestant contains it
  • The vote deeming it ineffective paves the way for it to be pulled from market

Sudafed in the US contains pseudoephedrine. In my experience, it does work.

As the news article states - the Sudafed behind the counter - that requires you speak to the pharmacist to get - contains pseudoephedrine
The version on the public access store shelf does not.

Check the label

The spectacular downfall of a common, useless cold medicine

This week's unanimous vote on phenylephrine's ineffectiveness was decades in the making.

I'm apparently not the only one to determine that it didn't work. The push to eliminate was due to possible Meth manufacture and not effectiveness.

To me this proof you should trust your own body and make decisions for yourself.

Costco sells just the good stuff behind the counter.

I don’t think you can make meth from phenylephrine. You need pseudoephedrine to do that, and that’s why they need to be behind the counter. That’s probably why the drug companies really want to convince people that phenylephrine works, to keep selling things on the shelf. Correct me if I am wrong, I have never try to make meth before ;)

I have had a sinus infection since late February when I had surgery which inadvertently blocked my sinus. Ten weeks of antibiotics , now getting repair surgery Monday, no antihistamines, no decongestant, no otc pain relievers for a week before. I am so miserable. I will take any of those ineffective meds right now.
are you no longer supposed to take Benadryl when you are allergic to an insect bite?

Sorry to hear that :(
Diphenhydramine, in regular Benadryl is still a good antihistamine, just the decongestant in Benadryl Plus is not effective.

CVS pulls popular over-the-counter cold medicines from store shelves TODAY after FDA said they didn't work

  • Pharmacy chain is voluntarily pulling cold medications with phenylephrine
  • Walgreens may follow if FDA rules it should be removed after public consultation
