Lincoln Tunnel tollbooths close forever on Sunday

We dont travel on a lot of American toll roads but we have been noticing that more and more booths are becoming unmanned and turning electronic. DH ordered and EZPass transponder in the fall ahead of our drive to FL. He was able to pay for it online (came with a toll balance) with a Canadian credit card and the nice folks mailed it to our house in Canada so we could have it already on our windshield and use it when we got on I-90. He was able to register 3 vehicles to the transponder and it has a Velcro attachment for each windshield so we can put it in whichever vehicle we are using for the trip.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the toll highways and bridges in the USA become electronic payment in the near future. The big toll highway across the Greater Toronto Area, Hwy 407, was designed to be electronic toll payment only. You either have a transponder or the owner of the vehicle license plate gets a bill in the mail, with an added surcharge for not having a transponder.

Finally, now remove them swiftly so we don’t have to deal with that traffic. Lincoln tunnel is the worst.

One minor annoyance:
Our GPS warns us, "Toll Booth Ahead." But there's no booth.
It's just a gantry with a sign that says, "Don't Slow Down."

I kind'a miss the old booths with peep you could talk to.

I certainy don't miss toll booth collectors
Everything is now transponders or scanning your license plate

Been using EZPass forever. Began in the mid-90's when my kids were going to college in New York and New Jersey. Don't miss the traffic jams and some tolls are discounted with the EZPass.

Now if only ALL the states would come together for a universal toll transponder! Like Congress told them to do- A DECADE AGO!

I'm curious as to which state your husband used to sign up for the EZPass? I tried to sign up on the New York State website for EZPass before my November trip to South Carolina. I tried it three times. I entered all my personal information and also the type of pass, and the vehicles and plate numbers. It took my Canadian address, including my postal code, and my US credit card info. The initial $25 charge also went through each time successfully on my US credit card account as a pending transaction.

After I got to the end and hit the "enter" to finish the application, I got an error message that "it couldn't proceed at this time, try again later". I tried twice more on two different days and times, with the exact same issue. A complete waste of a couple of hours of time. In searching online I apparently wasn't the first Canadian to have the exact same issue. I finally called customer service and was told that it wasn't set-up for Canadian addresses!! Huh? Yet, there is a place to indicate Canada as the country and it allows you to pick which province and changes the zip code field to a postal code field. I definitely got the impression that the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing.

So I finally gave up and decided to let them send me a mailed billing, now that they have access to Ontario plate information. In my case it's only for the short part of I-90 from Lackawanna to the Pennsylvania border, so not a big deal, but a very frustrating experience. I travelled on my outbound journey on November 10th and haven't seen any billing yet. I'm told by friends that the initial one seems to take about 6 to 8 weeks.

The three $25 pending transactions all reversed themselves in about 3 or 4 days. Until they had reached an agreement to exchange plate information, the Governor of New York State had been constantly complaining (probably for local political consumption) about Canadians using the throughways without paying the tolls, after they had initially removed the booths. Maybe she should now spend as much time ensuring her administration actually gets their system working.

The worst toll tunnel system are between Norfolk, Virginia and Portsmouth, Virginia. The operator of this toll system are guaranteed that they can increase the cost of their toll for the next 30 years. It is an Easy Pass system.
