What is the most unbreakable record in sports?

Interesting “topic starter” article. I can’t argue against any of them but there are so many more that could be included in most major sports!

Football… the record for most ties in a season…really? !

Any NBA player/coach winning 12 NBA titles?
William "Bill" Russell won eleven (11) NBA titles.
Now beat that Michael Jordan?

For a long time Bob Beamon's long jump of 29.2 ft, breaking the previous record by 1 ft, 9 inches, was thought to be unbreakable. It was broken in 1991 by Mike Powell. The point is, all records can be broken.

Gretzky's record is so far ahead of everyone else, that individual record will never be broken.

Gretzky's points record will never fall unless they make significant changes to hockey (eg bigger nets and smaller goalie pads).

Ovechkin might break his goals record, although if he does I hope it's in Calgary so I can be there to boo him when it happens. <<statements about Ovechkin's politics self censored to remain onside with board rules>>

Although some have come close.

So with team or some individual records there is a possibility, albeit unlikely for some of the team consequtive streaks.

Gretzky's points record is 2,857, the 2nd person on that list is 1,921. That is for a non-active player, so Jagr is not going to break that record. But to give you an illustration of the scale of different the 2nd place person only did 67 % of what Gretsky did.

That 2nd place person would need to do almost another 50% MORE of their own record to reach Gretzky's. That is an amazing hard feat to reach.

Yeah. Crosby and Ovechkin are both slightly under half of Gretzky's point total, and are 35/37 respectively. They are the best players of their generation and would have to produce at top levels until their mid 50s to beat that record, which is obviously not going to happen.

Also, defense, goaltending and team defensive systems have improved dramatically since the '80s when Gretzky played, and the salary cap has made teams more even. If he started his career now he wouldn't be able to come close to his own record either.

Cal Ripkin Jr.'s record of consecutive MLB games played of 2,632 will never be broken, simply because of how teams now tend to give players, even their best starters, breaks in order to minimize injuries. There is no current player even close (more than a few hundred games). Different era.

They could widen the goal by 10 inches and the height by 8 inches.

Are there any active MLB ball players that have played 2,500 consecutive games????????

Yeah, it would take a dramatic change to the fundamental rules of the game for that record to be broken.

And a change to the rules of the games would allow pretty much all of these to be broken - eg, if Baseball shortened a game to 6 innings the number of no-hitters would go way up, etc.

Johnny Vander Meer's two consecutive no-hitters. I doubt anyone will throw 3 in a row.
This is the one I have heard for a while now. Career stats always depend on length of career. If one can score x amount of points then someone can score x+1. Point taken with Wayne as he was such a once in a lifetime players but probability is probability. Back to back to back means the stars have to be aligned for a long time for something most can never even do once.

I doubt that anyone will beat Pete Rose's career hits record. Not only was he a consistent hitter, he played longer than modern day players. Just don't bet on it. ;)

Tom Brady has seven SB rings as a starting QB. Next behind that are (retired) Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana with four.

Pete Rose’s career hits record is amazing and he belongs in MLB Hall of Fame..

Gambling is a disease and it is about time. MLB needs recognize that gambling was and still is Pete Rose’s heroin addiction disease. iMO.

Pete Rose’s was part of that Big Red Machine.

They changed the rules for the javelin throw to make sure this 1984 world record would never be broken. Athletes were starting to throw it too far for the stadiums. The new javelin was designed so it couldn't be thrown as far.

Anything with tule changes or shortened seasons should not count as it’s not the same record they are going for now.
