Wow what will that do to Hawaiian, tho?

We'll have to wait and see. Many people here are loyal to Hawaiian and they will still have many more flights times to all the islands than Southwest will.

I always flew Hawaiian for work because they had many more options for flight times. We will still fly Hawaiian. We still have a lot of miles with them too.

There is no comparison between Southwest and Hawaiian Airlines!

If price is your only criteria - go for it, but I don't want to spend that much time on a Southwest flight!

I am sticking with Hawaiian but many people like Southwest's prices for these short Inter-island flights. They are all really only about 30 minutes.

Well - that's true!

What is the difference really? A small cup of juice on a Hawaiian Air flight?

On longer flights: Comfort, quality, space, selecting your seat, first class option, and meals and snacks on longer flights.

Plus I like to book all the way through whenever possible.

I thought you implied on another thread you’ve never flown on Southwest.

No - I have in my younger, broker days, but I wouldn't now.

I almost always stop off in Honolulu to visit family before going on to a neighbor island. So the cheaper Southwest inter island flights usually work for me. And the 2 free bags beats paying $15/bag on Hawaiian. My first interisland SW flight didn't leave a good impression tho. It was an hour late, due to lack of 1 crew member, and they had to really scour around to find a fill-in. No problems with 3 subsequent flights.

With companion pass and being retired now, we will fly Southwest to Hawaii even tho' that means a transfer in California :) When he was working, DH used to value time a little bit over money, but now retired, values money over time.

To compare apples to apples for the most common airfare class (economy), Southwest is the clear winner over Hawaiian in the comfort and space areas. According to Seat Guru, Hawaiian's economy seats have 30" pitches for most of their Airbus fleet, where as Southwest's are 32-33" on their Boeing 737 fleet. So if you require business / first class accommodations and are willing to pay for it, then yes, Hawaiian would be a better choice. However, if you are the bulk of passengers who choose to fly economy, then Southwest is the clear winner in giving everyone more space and comfort.

Not from this article, but we flew Southwest from Honolulu to Kona yesterday for $29. Return trip will cost the same. Flights are currently discounted/on sale; 2nd time in the last month or so.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but there are a LOT of people who have experience with the idiosyncrasies of Southwest. The free bags, the checking-in exactly 24 hours before the flight for an earlier boarding, and the A-B-C boarding lines. For folks with Hawaiian loyalty, they may well want to stick to what they know. Airline brand loyalty is a fickle thing. Usually trumped by price and convenient schedules.

I like SW though I have not flown with them for many years - we live close to a UA hub. When I was traveling for business, SW is the easiest airline to rebook, cancel or make change to a different flight in the same day. There was no fee for a checked baggage. If they start to fly inter island and if the price is right, I will fly with them.

Well I totally agree when you compare a direct Hawaiian Airlines flight from JFK in NY to HNL in Honolulu versus some 1 or 2 stop flight trip with Southwest Airlines from NY to Honolulu. On the short trips to and from neighbor islands I have used both Hawaiian and Southwest the difference is much less. I am booked for a trip from Honolulu to Maui with Southwest in September.

Is this an old post? Hasn't Southwest been flying interisland for a number of years?

They're boosting their daily intra-island flights. If they would be so kind as to increase routes to and from KOA so I had more than one departure time choice when flying direct to the mainland, I wouldn't complain about that, either.

Yes, since 2019 but they really didn't have many flights. They just announced they will be almost doubling the number of flights.

That was always my problem too. They had so little choices of flight times, I actually just quit checking with them.

I'll start looking again in the fall to see if what they added will be any better.
