Ok guys, experienced DVC'er here. I have 700 points across 5 contracts at 4 resorts (all Resale but 150 of my points acquired after losing perks).

I am a total neophyte about trading out or exchanging. For some reason the thought intimidates me. Also, just not been that impressed with the RCI options in the past.

II and Marriott Vacation Resorts has me rethinking my position and maybe looking into getting more educated...but where to start?

What is the difference in Trading and Exchanging in II? Are they the same thing?

If I wanted 7 nights in Paris Resort in 2023, how would I go about looking at that exchange? Trade? Do I lose those DVC points while I wait for it to be accepted?

Hell, I am not even sure what to ask!

You are unlikely to get Paris unless you are ok with the Marriott disneyland a trainride away from Paris.

Trading and exchanging are the same thing. It's like anything else, if it's new and unknown, it's intimidating. You're ahead of most DVC members because you at least have interest and are willing to seek additional information. I own 432 DVC points and have been as high as 855 points in the past. You need to learn the system, plan ahead and develop realistic expectations. Marriott/Vistana/Westin have an internal trading priority which limits exchange options dramatically to those not on the inside. Exchange happen but they are limited, esp to more in demand locations during higher demand times, like HI. Basically you would decide when and where you want to go, investigate the specific resorts and place your request at least a full year out. Then IF those units come available and you're at the top of the list, you'd match and DVC/II take your points. Remember it's not a first come system but a trade priority so you could be searching for 8 months and someone place a request for a resort you're searching for and they'd move ahead of you if they had a higher trade power. Most resorts in II or RCI are beneath the standards of DVC so you need to investigate specifically and not just assume the II rating means it's a good resort for you. You con't want any avoidable surprises.

I usually start with the II (or RCI) resort directory then narrow down from there. When I'm looking for resorts I don't already know or haven't been to in a long time, I look at the reviews and ratings here on TUG, TripAdvisor's and do a general search esp if the resort or system has their own website. Things like when they normally do their bulk deposits, do they have a full kitchen, what laundry facilities are present, are there extra charges like resort fees or AC and how they do unit assignments are the types of things I'm looking for. I also check to see what units types they have as I may not be OK with a smaller 1 BR for a resort that has 2 or more types as an example. I'm also looking at sleeping capacity as many DVC members are accustomed to high volumes (like 5 in a 1 BR, 9 in a 2BR) and even going over which is not the norm for most timeshares. Many 2BR only sleep 6 for example.

This version of II is new for DVC so there may be some nuances that are different than before and with RCI. The lack of ability to trade up in unit size without giving up the extra points or to have cheaper exchanges during flex time are two of the negatives for DVC historically when one is exchanging.

Nice seeing you here Henrycpa91. Try to get more mouseowners here to learn the other systems. At least the learning curve is a lot shorter here with all the great knowledge of Tuggers.

I am glad that I have MVC, as we are familiar with II. Now, if HGVC would leave RCI and move over to Interval, it would be perfect for me.

Thanks so much for starting this thread. I'm in the same boat- experienced DVC owner trying to learn how to use II. Specifically, I am interested in learning about last minute cheap cash weeks like RCI has with "last call." Are there any other fees associated with that with II? Thanks so much for all the help and info.

Where are you looking to travel with last minute getaways

Ok Thanks for the replies guys.

Sounds like for Europe, I will simply need to rent my DVC points that year.

For HI, I would put my request out there on II. At least a year in advance? And does that mean those points are not available for me to use in DVC? Are they "on hold" so to speak?

I'm pretty sure they don't hold your DVC points, at least they didn't previously. One just has to make sure they have the applicable points available if/when they match.

It depends on time of year. Winter- Florida beaches, preferably gulf coast. Summer and Fall- New England preferably within 3 hours of Boston
That sounds limiting, expensive, and a ticket to lower rated resorts when available. Winter is high season for much of Florida below the level of Orlando. Getaways work best for areas with excess inventory and a number of good resorts like Orlando, LV, Branson and for truly off season, not just shoulder season. Available inventory in shoulder season for many locations is mid level and lower rated resorts. There's no harm in looking and trying but don't count on a top option for a cheap price during the times with a large segment of people want to travel to that location. If you want to go to HHI in January, that's easy even for top level resorts as an example.

Interval works best for those who want high end but aren't limited by the school calendar and are willing step into shoulder season and off season and don't always need a two bedroom especially in locations where many of the resorts lock off and are deposited as smaller units. There is too much competition for prime time and too few deposits. It doesn't have to the dead of off season. Think Hawaii in May, Sept, Oct, Nov and early December; Aruba in April and May; Hilton Head in November=;. May or November in Florida beach locations, etc.

you just described us!

We homeschool so not really limited on travel times except on dance recitals!

And we found October/November at Aulani a really pleasant time to visit HI so would be open to that again. I suppose the question is what is better, using DVC points to just go to Hawaii or trying to trade into II for a 1BR.

May and November in FL would be fine with us.

Any idea of anything in Scottsdale or north of that in AZ in November? Would that be a shoulder season?
