Cleaning lady was at the house and I discovered the patio doors won’t unlock. It may be because a vinyl sticker was on the door fell into the place where the two sides meet when closed. I have tried to pull it out but there is something left. The lock will not depress on either slider. Any suggestions

Can you take a picture and post it? Are you in your own place or elsewhere? We just moved (again) to another condo (hopefully our home will be ready by March 1) and we have to kind of lift the door by the handle to engage and disengage to lock. Also check the track to make sure nothing is laying down there (like a pole or stick to keep the door from opening.

You might try pushing the doors further closed before trying to unlatch the lock. If the door is putting pressure on the latch, it may be too tight to move.

I know the sliding doors here at my home have weird latches that need to be halfway closed to extend the hook mechanism before it'll engage inside the lock. The door won't close otherwise. Never saw a door latch like that before.

I can’t upload the picture because file too large yes it is my home. No nothing is in the way except for vinyl piece in doorjamb I have pushed up and sideways but I think the hook mechanism has hooked onto the piece of vinyl

Have someone push it closed and try to unlock.

Ok finally got it open by pushing locked doors every direction. Put wd40 in lock. Any suggestions before I close and lock them again. I finally got the mangled piece of vinyl out

Do not lock the doors. Use a board in the track to secure the door shut so no one can enter from the outside.

Come Monday try locking the door, and if you can't get it unlocked then maybe you can get some professional assistance (which is unlikely on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day).

Enjoy!

Have you tried swearing at the same time as you try to disengage the lock? Growing up that always worked for my Dad; I would not recommend his other favorite tool for fixing things in this situation (a Sledgehammer).

Replace the sliding door with a French door.
Our house used to have _10_ sliding doors.
Now there are none. The cost was ~$1000 per,
It was worth it.

This is Florida and I have three sets right next to each other going out to lanai. Would like in Wisconsin though

Is that you, Ralphie?!

I would put more WD-40 and use the stick for a day to let it settle before locking it...

Got it fixed sure it was the vinyl stickon that was there so someone would notice the glass door.

Using any oil on a lock will eventually cause dust and dirt to stick to it. Silicon lubes in a spray can are better for locks. To clean the lock use a dry parts cleaner in a spray can.

And given that new doors generally need to be hurricane-proof, the cost would be closer to $10K per instead of $1K (and I'd be surprised if anyone could get a sliding door replaced with a French door for anywhere close to $1K any more, as building/remodeling costs are insane).

Or graphite to lubricate.
