No visiting! The hospital had a COVID case on her floor and this puts some kind of auto stop on visiting. I’m waiting for her social worker to get more detailed info, as it sounds like this COVID positive case is a brand new development.
Mom had a knee replacement on Monday, and I flew in from LA yesterday to visit with her for a few days. I’m supposed to fly home on Sunday. She’s in a rehab hospital at her independent living center, and I believe all the patients in the rehab hospital are elderly residents of this care facility.
My options are to take her outside for a visit. But there’s not a sheltered space and rain is forecast for later today and tomorrow. Or I can theoretically take her out on a pass, which seems unlikely to be an actual option since she has two bad knees (one just a few days post op), a bad back, a bad shoulder, balance issues and she’s overweight. Plus I would imagine she is supposed to keep her leg elevated and she’s probably wearing those squeezy leg things. Social worker is going to get in touch with physical therapy and find out if any of these theoretical options are actually viable for Mom’s specific situation.
So. Now I wait to find out if I’ve flown 3000 miles to talk to her on the phone.
Oh and yesterday’s flight was fun. I paid a premium to fly out of Burbank instead of LAX and a further premium to fly direct. Then it was too hot for us to take off fully fueled! Apparently, the hotter it is, the less lift that is created and the lighter the plane needs to be. Burbank has a short runway and nearby mountains. So with a fully booked flight, the weight of the plane + passengers + full fuel tanks is too much if it’s over X temp in the context of short runway and need for rapid ascent. Jet Blue had the option of booting 25 passengers off the plane or starting out with less fuel, and making a fuel stop on the way. Jet Blue opted for the latter, stopping in Salt Lake City for fuel. But because they did not know the weight of the plane until everyone was checked in and loaded, the plane was not yet fueled when we boarded and a flight plan had not yet been filed. Amazingly despite the fueling and flight plan delay in Burbank + the fuel stop in Salt Lake City, we were only two hours late into JFK. But that turned a 9:45pm arrival into a midnight arrival, with an ultimate arrival at my destination at 1:30am. In a mask for 12 hours.
So far this has been a great trip!
Hoping it does not turn out to be for naught.
PS The plane trip was not fun and I wish Jet Blue had handled it differently (informed us all in advance that the forecast temps might cause a problem, because I’m sure 25 passengers would have voluntarily rebooked), but really people? Challenging the flight attendants as to how flight operations are organized?! I’m pretty sure they are not in that decision chain.
Whatever. The thing life during COVID has taught me is to roll with it. For sure a COVID outbreak on a rehab floor of a hospital full of the elderly is not something anyone wants. I will just wait to see what the options are.
