It used to be that you could get a VIP upgrade from a non-handicap unit to a Handicap unit.

Is that no longer possible, it appears it is not possible, but can someone confirm this?

I've not ever seen this as an available choice/option since becoming an owner in July 2018. I've seen the reverse as a choice - if you initially select an accessible room and then select an upgrade - I get a prompt as to whether I want to only upgrade to another accessible room or if any room upgrade is acceptable - but not in the other direction.

I was told by owner care that if you select an accessible suite, your upgrades are only eligible for accessible upgrades. They will not remove the accessible option as they see you as having needed it. [but again, this is someone on the front end, not knowing how the back end works. Though it seems to make sense.]

It is like a Ghostbuster episode, you can't cross the streams. No HC to HC and NON-HC to NON-HC only. Yet an additional erosion of VIP Upgrade possibilities. I was looking at 4 BRs at La Cascasda and there are only 3 units available and 1 is HC and 2 are NOT. Not a lot of choices.

If I choose an accessible room and then book and choose the VIP upgrade option, here's what I always see (note the checkbox that allows you to limit the upgrade to only another accessible room - and note that by default this option is not selected - it's opt-in only):

I think it depends on the resort - when I took the last available suites at one resort and requested upgrade I didn't see that. Or it is possible that is a new feature post August website update.

Edit: it's a post august update at the resort I couldn't select non-mobility for pre-august upgrade request.

I've noticed it's a bit wonky depending on which resort you're trying to instant upgrade an accessible unit at. For most, the path seems to need and exact match of accessible capabilities: (1BR Mobility, Visual Assist --> 2BR Mobility, Visual Assist). (1BR Visual Assist would not upgrade to 2BR Mobility, Visual Assist).

An odd one is Old Town Alexandria. Seems only a 1BR Mobility will upgrade to 3BR Presidential Mobility. Couldn't get it to recognize the upgrade to same from a 2BR Deluxe or Lockoff.

Another odd one is Steamboat. Can't find any accessible unit that will upgrade into the 3BR Presidential Mobility unit.

Good news though - going in and modifying my reservations allows me to ensure that box isn't checked. It is now there for those reservations I made without the option.

Also bad news - for those that Wyndham decided was resale, no modifying of upgrade is possible.

There’s a known issue with instant upgrades from 1 —> 2 bedrooms for accessible units at OTA - it’s been this way ever since the new website was introduced last year. I’ve had it on our regression sheet for over a year now. Seems not to be a priority to fix.

Upgrade paths changed, although changes were never publicized or acknowledged, with the implementation of voyager in May 2017. I think the scenarios apply to any upgrades -- accessible, presidential, views. Upgrade paths are upgrade paths. We lost quite a bit with voyager. Not only did the paths reduce, we lost the ability to manually upgrade a reservation. If auto upgrades were real-time and if they worked consistently, the manual upgrades would be a moot point. Since auto upgrades aren't real-time - and desirable upgrade are sitting there for the taking (any one can book them whilst we wait for the batch upgrade process to maybe run and maybe upgrade our room) - we really should be asking for the manual upgrade process to return!

Pre-Voyager, we could choose to upgrade from standard to accessible and vice-versa (as well as have an option to pick a presidential unit or not - good example there, when booking Bonnet Creek, we would be given an option to select a 1 BR Presidential or a 2 Bedroom Deluxe as an upgrade, now we are only offered the 2 BR Deluxe). Accessible, presidential, views - upgrade paths were affected and to this day are still deficient.

Pre-Voyager, after booking, if there was an upgrade available that we wanted, we could manually go into the reservation and upgrade it as desired.

Since voyager, we have to rely on the (hidden) logic of the automatic upgrade. We've been told it's by occupancy, that's about all the information we've been given (with no acknowledgment they are different and not as good).

Agree, we (usually) see the option when we opt-in for an automatic upgrade for a handicap unit -- to only upgrade to a handicap unit (or same features). Thus with automatic upgrades, a handicap unit might upgrade to a standard unit. With voyager, the reverse is no longer true (a standard unit will not upgrade to a handicap unit).

It's another lost VIP benefit (upgrade paths as well as manually selecting an upgrade at any time after booking).

If you can believe OC..... Here is what I was told. The larger unit at a minimum must have ALL the same handicap features as the smaller unit - it can have more. Then to next larger unit with lowest points.
example: In this case, the 1br will upgrade to the lockoff as the 2br does not have a roll under sink.
  • 1br mobility= counter microwave, toilet grab bars, roll under sink
  • 2br mobility= counter microwave, toilet grab bars,
  • 2br Lockoff mobility = counter microwave, toilet grab bars, roll under sink
Presidential have a different wonky upgrade path.

HitchHiker tells us that Wyndham reads and might act on feedback. I've been regularly suggesting through the "give feedback" asking for relaxing the upgrade path selections to allow multiple options (like pre voyager) and let us choose which handicap option is sufficient. Any 1br upgrade to any 2br and we be allowed to choose. Maybe if all here start asking as well???

That is even more convoluted than I thought. I agree on the part that the larger unit must have ALL the same features and can have more. But I thought we could tell by seeing 'MOBILITY, HEARING IMPAIRED, VISUALLY IMPAIRED'. And thus a 1 BR MOBILITY will upgrade to a 2 BR MOBILITY, HEARING IMPAIRED but a 1 BR MOBILITY, HEARING IMPAIRED will not upgrade to a 2 BR MOBILITY as an instant upgrade (but if you opt-in and say you don't need the same accessible features, the 2nd scenario would upgrade -- as would the unit upgrade to a 2 BR standard unit. But perhaps your explanation of units not having the same features explains the additional wonkiness we see with upgrades working (or not). Who knew a 2 br mobility wouldn't have a roll under sink? (And I'm not sure I'm buying that explanations, btw). I've seen such a variety of features from resort to resort, you never know what you are getting til you get there (IMO) but maybe there is some special coding under the covers (if so, Wyndham should let their resort staff know). Seriously, can you imagine if auto upgrades are looking deeper than the MOBILITY, HEARING IMPAIRED, VISUALLY IMPAIRED tags? Wyndham, tell me it isn't so.

A fair ask is that upgrade paths be known and documented. A fair ask is that we be given back what we had pre-voyager (no restrictions/considerations to instant upgrades). And a fair ask is the we be given back the ability to upgrade manually (selecting if we want something or not) after our initial booking. Automatic upgrades can still do whatever they are doing, whenever they happen to do their thing. But it is not right that we can see an upgrade sitting there and are not able to upgrade our reservation at that time nor we have different options for instant upgrades than the auto upgrade and that we lost some options with the implementation of voyager. If Wyndham is tracking usage of features, I can't see this ever hitting their radar - it's a VIP benefit used most by their most elite members (whom seem to be falling off the radar more and more so these days).
