Wyndham VIP access to inventory

Question. I have been a long time owner of Wyndham and have all of my deeds in Myrtle Beach because we like to go there at least once a year. I will use the other points at other resorts when we want something different but realize that it can be more challenging to get in 10 months out. During a update the sales people were saying that being VIP you get access to more inventory is that true? What are the odds of me being able to obtain a free upgraded room at Myrtle Beach during summer months? Is there a real advantage to being VIP? At this point I have over 700K points but alot of them are resale points, just wondering if it is worth upgrading to get VIP for only 15K and an additional 77K points.

Absolutely false.

When sales weasels' lips are moving lies are flowing.

It could be worth having for various reasons depending on which level of VIP this would get you.

Bronze, no. Silver, maybe. Gold, yes.

VIP has access to the same inventory at 10 months. For your purposes, I don’t think it would make sense to spend the extra to become a VIP because summer in Myrtle Beach is a busy time. I don’t think you would be likely to get upgrades. MAYBE a discount at Ocean Boulevard because they are the most expensive and seem like the last to fill. But the large rooms will go fast.

Upgrading to VIP would give you slightly earlier access to Margaritaville resorts and discounts/upgrades in unbooked inventory. That inventory is only unbooked because of low demand - Myrtle Beach in the summer doesn’t seem like it would ever fall into that category. The discounts are at 60 days, so if it’s someplace you aren’t seeing at 10 months it won’t be there. The upgrades are progressively closer to check in depending on the VIP level and will have the same issue.

There can be some reasons for buying into the VIP program; I did at the VIPG level, but with the recent changes eliminating unlimited housekeeping for new VIPs and the upcoming changes eliminating the current unstated policy allowing use of VIP benefits with resale points, I don’t believe it makes much economic sense. Based on your stated desires, upgrading to VIP wouldn’t get you what you want.

It depends on how you use it. If you are not too old and use it to snowbird in the winter, then VIPG or VIPP. If most of your uses will be in the summer, point discounts are hard to come by so then probably not unless you plan to snowbird down the road. It depends how you use it and for how many years. But then again, 15K is cheap so it all depends.

It definitely depends. They said they do go other places so depending on where and when they might be more likely to get a discount and upgrade. If they'd be at least silver and preferably gold.

If you aren't VIP now and they are saying that you can become VIP for $15k they are probably talking bronze. There is no way the discounts and a single RARP at 11 months (at which time you can now only use the VIP eligible points ) is worth it.

If they currently have 700k points and "a lot" of them are resale, then it's definitely not gold, unlikely to be silver, and probably bronze, if I had to guess. And no level will help with availability and discounts/upgrades during summer at Myrtle Beach, which seems to be the main desire here.

You can find discounts and upgrades at MB in the summer if you're willing to spend the time searching. I expect weekends would be harder to find but Sunday-Thursday more likely. Larger units probably not. Upgrades with bronze no way. Silver, iffey. Gold would stand a better chance.

I was thinking that with more points they might be able to go other places more and were interested in doing that.

Also though if she gets to Bronze then she will only have 300,000 points to use for a 15% discount at 60 days and 15 days to get an upgrade.

That's why I said no to bronze. Even silver I gave a maybe.

This is a legendary FUD sales tactic that is still often used today. They talk in terms of priority reservations and the more developer points you own the more inventory you see. During an update at OTA the sales guy even trotted out some system score on paper for my account that supposedly enables this functionality. When I told him how cool that was and that I would have to ask my Wyndham IT contacts exactly how that works - he quickly changed topics and the paper was removed from the desk quickly.

Sales makes general statements like “you get access to more inventory” because it’s a half truth. As @Eric B said, it’s technically true if you are VIP that you get more access to MVC inventory for example. They then try to apply this same concept to other inventory - which is NOT true - to close the sale, but notice how it’s only said - never written anywhere. Ask them to show you in writing in the club rules where it says this - and you will get nothing from them because it isn’t true, except in specific use cases like MVC access. That’s why they can say it in the presentations like they do - but they gloss over the details and use FUD to attempt to close the sale. Don’t fall for it.

If only there was a less expensive way for them to simply get more points than spending $15k with Wyndham. ;)
