Thought I would give an update on my Interval 1 bedroom trade for my daughter into Marriott’s Ocean Pointe. I was really excited about this trade because the unit code showed ocean front, but at checkin my daughter was given a parking lot side view (2nd floor). Just figured I would post and say don’t count on receiving a specific view based on a II unit code.

I know it’s always been that II trades get the worst in views but I still think it’s unfair. Someone paid for and deposited that ocean front room and II profits once again renting it to someone else.

Historically II-Codes are not expected to be honored at any Marriott or Vistana resorts. In fact II reservations explicitly state that other than Room-Type, View or Floor for Marriott & Vistana reservations are not guaranteed.

I plan on booking my daughter into Wyndham Panama City resort next year as every unit is ocean front - no worries about view.

Not really. II does not give consideration to view type at all so there is no benefit to the member who deposited based on the view type. Thus the depositor lost absolutely nothing. Certainly the resort or system or another member will receive some potential benefit. Historically most MVC resorts have given the view of the deposit, some to the extreme as to be unwilling to match up rooms to avoid moving. Covid has changed that, at least temporarily and some resorts that were 100% hard line have done a 180. I suspect this is mainly to allow continuity of stays and avoid moving and thus the extra cleaning other risks involved rather than to simply take advantage of the situation for rentals.

But some are much lower than others. I've stayed there many times but I'm not sure how they do the exchange assignments. Getting top summer weeks can be a challenge with RCI for this resort though.

@Dean I meant to say MVC profits not II.

The II exchanger usually doesn’t benefit in my opinion, bc no matter what you deposit you will most likely end up with the worst view. Again not in every location and as you mentioned, and of course Covid is a factor, but still mostly true.

Again it’s just my opinion. Thanks to the OP for letting us know about this location so people can adjust expectations.

The only guaranteed ocean front unit codes at Ocean Pointe on an exchange are the 3BR and perhaps the 2BR side of the 3BR. That being because all the 3BR units are ocean front and also because the 2BR side of the 3BR has different occupancy counts than the 2BR lock off.

If I ever get anyone a getaway or an exchange into a unit I think is Oceanfront, I don't tell them so there are no expectations.

There are a lot of factors that play into room placement when trading in with an II exchange. I’ve found with Friday arrivals I usually get a better placement. There are usually fewer people arriving on Friday. Time of year. Shoulder or off season there might be fewer owners staying who will always get priority. A couple years ago I traded into Grande Ocean in October. The unit code was ocean front, but I had no expectations that I would get it. Lo and behold we were front and center staring straight at the ocean. Had it been summer time I seriously doubt we would have gotten that unit.

Sure but I suspect that the main winner here is members who might get an OF for a continuity stay. IMO that's appropriate if it's where the better units are going. But even if MVC rents it out I'm OK with that and see no true loss given the II exchange structure.

A one bedroom oceanfront would be in the building that is away from the main campus. My friend was there last week on an II exchange and had a first floor two bedroom in that building. As a Florida Club owner if you reserved that unit/view you would get it.

Views are definitely not a guarantee, and almost no one knows about view codes. It's only because of TUG and dioxide that we know those views. He worked on that database, and I am grateful, but I know not to count on the view. It sure has worked for MMO. I always get the view as stated, but sometimes the units are equipped to make them accessible for wheelchairs. The units are not as attractive. I would take an island view over that.

And one lady had an oceanfront view code and complained to the front desk that her view was blocked by trees. This was as we checked in this past March. She was pretty rude. She was an exchanger. I thought it was kind of ridiculous. She was slamming things down on the counter and couldn't find her code for her Covid test to show. She could have broken her laptop with her fury.

I agree on the appreciation for TUG and the work done. I'd also add that I've seen LOT'S of entitlement on view and related issues and almost always from members, not exchangers. I'm sure most were just difficult and/or entitle people but it is sad to see such unreasonable behavior.

I just stayed at Ocean Pointe last week on an II exchange. The Interval code was for a 1BR Ocean Front and that is what I was given at check-in. 1-BR Ocean Front. I will say it was an Ocean Front on the 1st Floor of the SailFish building so it was more pool front than Ocean, but it was still better than an Oceanside unit would have been, and we actually found it very convenient to just go up the one flight of outdoor stairs and be at our unit, made it really easy to run up to the room to have lunch or make drinks or whatever.

Was their or you bonvoy number on the reservation? Wondering if that is helping, since it would identify it as a an owner trade vs just random II trade.

Having a Bonvoy number linked to a reservation does not necessarily identify a booking as an Owner-Trade.
There are many Non-Marriott TS-Owners who happen to be Bonvoy-Members exchanging via II.

As others have mentioned earlier, it has a lot to do with season + availability + status [TS-Status more than Bonvoy-Status].
Being a Marriott TS-Owner [Chairmans] + Bonvoy [Titanium] we have received nice upgrades [even for II-Exchanges] and can't complain.

However, have also experinced the occasional Level-2 Parking-Lot view even while visiting Marriott Ko'Olina [our home resort] on an II-Exchange.
Have to admit that II-Exchanges rank almost last on the priority list.

The Bonvoy number will link to your account information which will have your owner status.
Otherwise you are hoping that the correct information gets passed from II which I can tell you from looking at the reservation I have added my number too, does not always happen as they sometimes still had another persons info.

Agree that adding the Bonvoy-Number will help link your owner information.
However, having a Bonvoy-Number does not mean that someone is a Marriott TS-Owner.

My memory is vague, however, following is an order of priority considered for upgrade-requests:
Marriott-Resorts
  1. Marriott Bonvoy Retail Bookings are guaranteed the view they booked.
    • Paid premium $$$$ for Ocean-Front/View
  2. Internal-Exchanges [Marriott DCP Weeks/Points] are guaranteed the view they booked.
    • Paid premium Points for Ocean-Front/View
  3. Marriott Bonvoy Rewards Bookings. Upgrade not guaranteed. Can request.
    • Priority based on Bonvoy-Status [Titanium/Platinum/Gold/Silver]
  4. II Exchanges/Getaways. Upgrade not guaranteed. Can request.
    • Marriott-Owners Priority based on TS-Ownership [Chairmans/Presidential/Executive] not Bonvoy-Status
    • Non Marriott-Owners may be upgraded if no Marriott-Owner is ahead in the queue.
  5. Encore packages. Upgrades usually not entertained irrespective of TS-Status or Bonvoy-Status.
  6. Third Party Booking-Sites: Expedia, Hotels.Com. Upgrade not possible.
    • Even if better rooms are available, dumpster view is guaranteed.
    • To encourage direct bookings no rewards priviliges are granted irrespective of TS-Status or Bonvoy-Status.
Not sure if #3 or #4 ranks higher in priority.

Vistana-Resorts
  • In addition to a list of criteria used to decide priority, Vistana also uses Time-Stamp of reservation.
  • Not sure if Marriott considers Time-Stamp of reservation.

Marriott uses timestamp at some properties. Mainly Maui Ocean Club. I will also point out that #3 is similar to #1. You can pay a point premium to book a better view. Pay the premium, get the better view. Though you may be in one of the lesser villas of that view category.

I thought the same thing in 2001 when we first purchased at Ocean Pointe, but I will say they made it abundantly clear that the view didn’t trade.

The in,y way to guarantee an ocean front view through exchange is to exchange for a 3 bedroom, or the master unit of the 3 bedroom unit. The master unit can be recognized by the beds listed for the second bedroom. That master units second bedroom has 2 twin beds instead of a king bed.

The three bedroom units are ocean front only.

A one bedroom oceanfront would be in the building that is away from the main campus. My friend was there last week on an II exchange and had a first floor two bedroom in that building. As a Florida Club owner if you reserved that unit/view you would get it.

This is t entirely accurate. Each of the main campus buildings has 7 two bedroom locks outs that are 1 bedroom and studio units. So there are 28 one bedroom ocean front units in the main campus.

However, nearly all of the Kingfish building is considered ocean front, including all of the units facing the inlet. This was a Major point of contention among owners who had already purchased ocean front units prior to the announcement of view categories for Kingfish. Now the chances they would get a “true” ocean front was diminished and you could easily end up with an inlet view in a building separated from the main campus. Thus Kingfish got a bad name from the start. MVC toyed with the idea of making Kingfish building “exclusive”, as in you had to purchase Kingfish to stay in Kingfish. Obviously that never happened.

20 years down the lines, now I’m sort of sorry we own a 3 bedroom unit. I’d like to have the inlet view sometime, but we are confined the 3 bedroom locations. They’re good locations, but after 20 years (we’ve returned every year except one), they’ve become to familiar

I agree on the appreciation for TUG and the work done. I'd also add that I've seen LOT'S of entitlement on view and related issues and almost always from members, not exchangers. I'm sure most were just difficult and/or entitle people but it is sad to see such unreasonable behavior.

Or told by a salesman that, as an owner, they’d always receive preferential, special and privileged treatment. Our original salesman was upfront that, as an exchanger, the view didn’t trade and we’d be beneath owners staying on their time at their home resort. Likewise we were told, so long as we were owners staying on our time at our home resort, we’d receive preferential treatment based on 1. Our ownership level (single week, multiple week at Ocean Point, multiple week at various resorts) 2. Time stamp of when we made our reservation.

I’ve seen, and laughed at, the entitled who believe their status trumps all others, including home week resort owners, and that they should be treated like royalty with all the employees their subjects.

At the same time I’ve felt pity for those MVC employees that have to endure this childish behavior of entitlement. Having to put up with an adult throwing a temper tantrum is unpleasant at best. To that end I’ve always tried to be content with the unit we’ve received, but we’ve been multiple week owners from very early on and unit placement hasn’t ever been much of an issue.

No doubt the employees that deal with unit assignments have a tough and usually thankless job. I guess I tend to be less sympathetic to those that rely on verbal promises from sales, esp once they've owned a couple of years as I don't see that as an excuse for a melt down or to be overly difficult. Owners using their week do receive priority and always have in one way or another.

I stayed in one of the 1 bedroom ocean fronts in the Sailfish building last week, so can confirm this is accurate, they are not all in the Kingfish building.

Do you know how many 3-bedroom units there are? Im curious how difficult it is to use a 3 bedroom GV Gold Florida Club week to get a 3-bedroom week at Ocean Pointe during the Summer?

I always believe owners should get ocean view over exchangers, even if they didn't pay for it.
