For those comparing California to other states, you may want to reconsider your conclusions in light of this confirmation of a new, more infectious strain.

So "more infectious" sounds scary so it's no surprise that authoritarian governors and mass media need new scary news as the virus becomes endemic.

Unfortunately the headlines appear to be slightly misleading. I did not read the article because it wanted to disable my ad-blocker.
I found a similar article on huffingtonpost though and if you read the actual contents, it appears to be nowhere as "alarmist" as the original headlined one.

I posted this so that we may consider new strains as a possible reason why LA and California numbers jumped so fast, even though we still have certain restrictions. Some on TUG keep stating this increase as an example that stay home policies don’t work, and this may help explain that’s not necessarily accurate. But of course, let’s just complain about the article title and that it’s overblown...yet another deflection from the issue at hand.

I thought the reason California's number have jumped so fast is because the current stay home policies aren't being followed and aren't restrictive enough. Aren't we supposed to lock down harder?

They aren’t being followed entirely - and now we have more information that indicates a possible reason why it may have been spreading so quickly and so much. It’s called science, and when we have new info our conclusions can change. The world is not flat, as well, and the sun doesn’t revolve around Earth...

I was not aware of that. Thank you so much!

Frankly, given your previous posts I couldn’t be too sure. But I’m glad to know you recognized that you were one of those I thought of when writing my earlier post, and it’s obvious that triggered something since you couldn’t refrain from responding.

Have a nice day. Wear a mask.

Seems bit of a condescending reply in my opinion. Remember we're all adults.

He was answering a very condescending post so isn't it appropriate. And not all act like adults here. Again like Ken said instead of discussing new data certain responders immediately attack with ancillary complaints that have nothing to do with the fact that a new variant has been detected. This variant as is usually expected is more contagious.

Hmmmmm....Condescending? Not really. Just reminding everyone that California is having problems because it isn't "tightly locked down".

More infectious does not mean more dangerous. It simply means more infectious.

A logical evolutionary strategy for the virus is to evolve to be more infectious, as well as to mutate to forms that result in more of its hosts to be healthy enough to not seek treatment and thus create more opportunities to spread.

The ones spotted so far have seemed no more or less deadly. With a case mortality rate in the 1% range there is not a lot of selective pressure to make it less virulent.

I did edit my original post that substituted virulence and contagious.

Once again, new information changes conclusions. My past comments were correct at the time, based on the knowledge I knew then. In this case, LA was not (and is not) "tightly locked down". And, a more infectious strain would help explain the increase in spread in recent months - these are not mutually exclusive comments. Your attempt at implying anything else is simply another indication that you are unable to objectively consider the facts.

Hmmmmm.....this sounds a little sus

I think we have to make a distinction between what you wanted to be true and what was actually true.

Like timeshare salespeople - Covid 19 needs buyers , and if it kills them all - there is no resale market
