My mother finally had cataract surgery on her "good" eye. They'd put it off while they failed to save her other eye from the garden fungus that destroyed it, then covid came along which put the surgery off several more months. She is now using "readers" to read with the good eye, and in just under three months has had the first pair fall apart on her. We are going over later today to drive her to the drugstore for new. But it occurred to me that there is no reason "readers" shouldn't be available in better quality from local optical stores like Lens Crafters, etc. It is unusual for any of us to break glasses, so I assume the drugstore readers are the cheapest of the cheap and that she'd be better off with something she paid more for upfront. Wondering if anyone has had any experience with this.

When I had eye surgery, I went through several pairs of readers before my eye was healed and I was able to get new prescription glasses. Their cheap - I would buy 3 pairs at a time, knowing that they would not last for ever. Since the are just a temporary fix, I don't think it's worthwhile to invest in an expensive pair. When is her appointment to get her new prescription after surgery?

Costco usually has a three pack for a reasonable price. I haven't ever broken any glasses, even the cheap ones so I can't comment on that. Were your mom's glasses plastic or metal? I think that the plastic ones are more sturdy. (My husband is hard on glasses and I don't let him buy metal ones any more).

+1 on the Costco readers. I've bought multiple packs over the years (with progressively stronger magnification) for reading or computer work. None have broken.

Costco readers at about 3 for $15 is the deal. And you (or mom) can try them out to select the usable power. Piece of cake.

I started using readers a year or so ago... I bought several packs of the Costco glasses for $15-18 and they are good. Ultimately, I discovered that I preferred glasses with blue light blocking, so found this set from Amazon which is about the same price per unit. The frames are plastic and do break but for ~$7/each it's perfectly fine for me.

I know others that prefer better frames and want to try them on - some pharmacies have good selections, but be prepared to pay $15-25 each for the nicer ones.

Also, the best readers I have personally used are from Zippo. You may not know they make readers...since they aren't for sale in some areas. I bought a pair in Greece last Nov when a pair I was traveling with broke, and they are fantastic. I tried ordering more but couldn't. It's on their website but when you try to order they won't ship to California.

Now that you mention this, maybe she is still waiting for "real glasses". I'd thought at one point she'd said "three months", but perhaps that changed.

They were plastic

That's very likely - I had to wait 3 months for my eyes to heal, before I could get a prescription. That's because your vision changes as your eyes heal.

You can buy a membership online. That doesn't help the parking issues. I'm not sure what the issues you are referring to are. I've found the parking lots a Costco a lot easier to deal with than those of say our local Trader Joe's or Whole Foods.

I used to wear prescription glasses, but now I get by with readers. I bought the pkgs at wholesale clubs in the past, but it's easy to pick up prettier ones at SteinMart (if they are still open) or Tuesday Morning (who also filed for BK). Sheesh, I might have to find a new source! LOL!

Parking is a freaking nightmare at our Costco, so much so that between just being two of us and the parking, it is simply a no go for us. Now Sam's around the block always has plenty of parking, but Cliff has "issues" with Sam's. Every month for the last few I've kept the free Sam's membership coupon that comes in the ValPak envelope (free if you spend $45, and when has anyone ever been out of a warehouse store for less than $200), and Cliff has agreed for free he can overlook his "issues", but so far we just haven't made it.

Before Patti surrendered and got glasses she use to buy 2 3-Packs at Costco that had different ratings. Then swap the lenses to allow for the difference between her eyes. But then Costco (presumingly to same money) started stocking Readers in which the lenses could not be unscrewed and switched. So she finally got glasses.

I love the parking lot at our Costco. It is so spacious and the spots are marked such that there are no banging of doors into other cars and no bumper able to touch someone else's bumper. Also you can back out of a space without feeling like you're going to back into the car behind you.

The Dollar Tree, for $1 they are good.
I bought a pair for a dollar somewhere one time, but they were crooked on my face!

I generally do pretty well with readers in multi-packs at Target.

If you want a nice selection of readers and bifocals online, go to www.readers.com. I bought a pair of bifocal sunglasses for driving that have worked out well.

I have a pair I bought at cvs. The ones at the dollar store broke.

Yes the ones for a dollar won’t last for years but until one know the correct vision from the cataracts, that takes a few months, they work.

The best non prescriptive readers imo are Scojo, stylish, high end lens and frames have never broken on me for years.

Cliff left me recovering from our garage sale ($240, including $10 for an old printer stand we hadn't put out until someone said "you wouldn't happen to have..."), and took Mom to CVS. We were able to let her use our 40% off coupon on one of the two pair. They run about $15 at CVS. We'll probe further on the prescription glasses status and order an Amazon 5-pack once/if she breaks one of the new glasses.

I like the Costco readers as well. I also like the Foster Grants at Walgreens. At one points I had about 9 pair of Costco readers all over the house. They come in packs of 3 and are a deal on sale. I abused and misplaced them. My middle school daughter suggested that if I had a more expensive pair of prescription reading glasses I probably wouldn’t loose them. She was correct. I also like them better. I still keep the Costco ones in random places like the car In cases of emergencie.
