15 Famous Musicians Who Actually Wrote Massive Hits For Other Singers

Who wrote all those hit songs for Dionne Warwick ???

I believe John Denver wrote "Leaving on a Jet Plane".

Paul Anka was also a prolific songwriter.

Like you, I wondered where the older songwriters were! I thought the choices must have been made mostly by someone under the age of 50. I don't even know who some of them are!! I must be getting old. :ponder:

Yes, John Denver did write the song "Leaving on a Jet Plane", performed and made famous by the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary. It was their biggest and final hit and their only No. 1 billboard hit.

Paul Anka was a prolific songwriter. Many were performed by him, but many others were written for other artists. Probably the best known is Frank Sinatra's signature song "My Way". While the music is from a French song, Paul wrote new English lyrics to it specifically for Frank and the rest is history! Anka also wrote the famous theme song for "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson", which was performed every night for 30 years until Carson's retirement.

Okay, talk about old, Bob Dylan is 79. Here's 50 other people who have recorded his songs.

What happen to all the old song writers & singers from Moton liked Smokey Robinson and they did not even include Paul McCarty from The Beatles or Stevie Wonders.???.
IMHO:hi::doh::unsure:

I think the point of the in the OP is people who were well-known performers in their own right, and who also wrote songs that were massive hits for other performers. So the Holland-Dozier-Holland team at Motown wouldn't count because none of them were well-known performers on their own.

I thought about Don Covay. Among his compositions was Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools, but he didn't write that specifically for her. He had it laying around and gave it to her. I decided Covay didn't fit the criteria. While he had some success as a performer on his own, I wouldn't class him as "well-known" or "famous" in his own right as a musician - but certainly in his own write as a composer.

Note that this would also excludes situations in which a performer has a massive hit doing a cover of someone else's song.

I knew about five or six songs on that list. My musical taste has definitely moved away from recent Top 40, R&B, and Hip Hop. I knew some of the songwriters, and some of the performers, but not many. Definitely a younger generation thing.

Music is definitely a fluid industry.

Dave
