Jiffypop popcorn

Have you ever made completely unburned JiffyPop popcorn? If so, how did you do it. Now that I have time to think about stuff, I was thinking about how much I loved watching that thing balloon up when I was kid and how there were always burnt pieces. When my oldest was little, we attempted JiffyPop on a couple camping trips. I ended up convinced that there is no way to get an entire pan of non-burned popcorn.

Hence, the advent of microwave popcorn. Not as much fun or handy for camping, but no burnt 'old maids'

The trick for us to make sure it didn't burn was to shake the dickens out of it while it was cooking, back and forth AND sideways, even in a circular motion. But as you say, I don't think there was ever a time without some burnt kernels.

No advice on jiffypop, but I have been popping my own popcorn for the past few years and it is quite delightful. Here is the "recipe" https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/perfect_popcorn/ but the important part of the recipe is actually in the technique. The most important tidbit is this: after you heat the oil to the correct temperature, add the popcorn then Cover the pot, remove from heat and count 30 seconds. Then you put it back on the heat and most of the kernels pop at about the same time, so that some don't burn while waiting for others to pop.

Popcorn lover here. Best thing I ever did was to run across the pampered chef silicone popcorn maker. 2 teaspoons of light olive oil, flakes of sea salt shaken in, add the measuring cap full of Orville white popcorn, put in microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. Seriously the best popcorn I’ve ever made at home.

Plus it folds flat which is great for travel.

I have been popping my own popcorn for the past few years and it is quite delightful.

When my wife and I separated, I dragged my feet buying a microwave. That was >2 years ago. Still don’t have one, and stovetop popcorn is one reason why. So good!

I like the popcorn popper that I bought on Amazon. I use coconut oil. So good. It's lightweight and heats fast, so you put the oil in at the same time as the corn. Anyone else still remember those electric popcorn poppers that were like a small kettle. Back before microwaves, they were “illegally“ in our college dorm rooms. Lots of late night popcorn but used creatively for stuff like canned soup too!

When I was a kid, my father made JiffyPop for us exactly once--it was a burnt mess. So disappointing! After that we were doomed to years of hot-air-popped popcorn.

He also had one of those sort of cage things that you could hold over an open fire to make popcorn, and he would use that over a burner on the stove. That made some really horrible popcorn, too.

JiffyPop on a electric oven was fun to watch especially when my late auntie was cooking it because she loved to talk on that old party line telephone.
She would always forget it was cooking and that JiffyPop popcorn would always burn to a crisp and smoked up the kitchen ....

We actually have Jiffy Pop pop-corn the other night and it came out great. Our daughter (33) was enthralled with the "old school" aspect of this and was diligent to keep swirling it over the burner the entire time. She did a great job! We enjoyed it as part of our family Saturday night "staying in" movie night. Alas, microwave pop corn is easier and more convenient.

In my opinion, having some burnt pieces is part of the unique Jiffy Pop flavor and experience!

We used Jiffy Pop when we had the RV. It had a gas range, but no microwave if we were 'boondocking' (not camping in an organized campground) The trick is not to have the heat too high and keeping it moving. Then taking itnoff the heat quickly when the popping stops. Trying to pop those last few kernels burns the rest.

I bought a Whirley pop and have never burned another kernel. It’s fun as well. You can experiment with different kernels, flavors, even homemade kettle corn which is my favorite!! Making more tonight

NO! But chalk it up to one of those 1970s childhood experiences. My family loves Costco Kirkland microwave popcorn.

We were given a hot air popcorn maker for a wedding gift over 45 years ago. We used this thing alot when our kids were growing up. A few years ago one of the kids took it home and is using it for some of my grandkids. It still works. Now I think I want it back,lol.

I would say no on the Jiffy Pop not burning for us as we only make this over a fire. The marsh-mellows we fire roast all seem burned too. No one seems to mind.

LOL my popper is 30 years old and was a gift for my college dorm room! I dusted it off a few years ago...the plastic is a bit warped but still works great.

And far less flavor. It comes out so dry that I have issues w/ salt or any kind of popcorn flavor seasonings to stick to the popcorn (unless I add melted butter! ).

@PigsDad True but a lot better for you. You can spray with a bit of spray oil and then add popcorn flavor seasoning. Far less fat than adding butter.
