Has this ever happened to you?
I had a prepaid Hertz reservation and when I arrived I was told:
"Sorry, we don't have a car for you." I found it almost unbelievable sine I had rented the car to get to an appointment.

Never had that happen! How is Hertz going to fix this?

I've had it happen where the class of car we rented wasn't available, so we were "upgraded". We also had one time where there was not a car available with the company we rented with, but there were cars at one of their partners. I think it was Budget/Avis. Thrifty and Dollar are both part of the Hertz company. Do they have any available cars?

It happened to me in Washington, DC, a few years ago with Thrifty. They were just *out* of cars in my class. I asked what they were going to do about it. The guy was pretty frazzled because a lot of people were standing there glaring at him. He said, "I've called the car wash area. We're very short-staffed today. They said they'll get cars over here as soon as they can." About every fifteen minutes I asked him again about my reserved car. He said he was sorry, but all he could do is reduce my rental price. He dropped the reserved cost for me several times. By the time a car finally showed up, I'd saved about $100 off the reservation.

This happens to us frequently. The desk agents try to talk us into paying for an upgrade, and we politely say "No, thanks." We have always been given a larger car at no extra charge. Once we reserved an economy car in Las Vegas, and wound up with a PT Cruiser!

Oh yeah, this happened to us once in Albuquerque. I think we had reserved a minivan, or SUV. Anyway, the one they had on the lot was a piece of sh*t. Dh said no way were we talking that car. They had to bring one over from the car wash lot, or wherever it was they kept the extras.

On our last trip to Kauai (1.5 years ago) they guy at the Desk tried to get us to upgrade. We said no. When we walked out to the lot the Gal said I do not have the size of the car you paid for so just choice which SUV you want for no extra charge.

We never agree to pay for an upgrade, but through the years we've gotten them many times. Sometimes it was because the class of car we reserved wasn't available, sometimes I just think the agent was being nice. We got a Prius quite a few years ago in Pennsylvania. That rental prompted us to buy a Prius. One year in San Diego dh and I were given a convertible instead of the midsize we'd reserved.

I've been renting cars for business for over 30 years. The free upgrade when they don't have the class I've reserved is very common. And before they say "Sorry, no cars in your class, so we're giving you a free upgrade", they try to sell the upgrade first. I never buy the upgrade.

I have never not received a car at all when I had valid reservation. There have been times when my rental company has directed me to another company to fulfill the reservation because they had no cars. Typically it's Avis sending me over to Budget, or one of Hertz/Thrify/Dollar referring me to the other company to fill the reservation. In many airports those companies are often behind the same counter.

A couple of times I've had to wait for a car to come back from the car wash. In Kona a few years ago, when we had to wait about an hour for our car, the manager gave upgraded us to a convertible for free when that one came back from the wash bout our car hadn't arrived yet.

It happened to me at the San Diego Airport many years ago. It was late at night and they were flat out of cars. There wasn't one on the lot. I don't remember which company. The agent drove me to my hotel in his own car!

I've never had a rental agency have absolutely no cars.
Usually, they can call another agency for some "loaners."

My favorite upgrade story is from a time when we went camping in California.
Instead of the little car we booked, all they had left was a behemoth town-car type.
I think it was a 6-seater. It looked way out of place in the mountain campgrounds.

Last year on Maui we were given what was supposed to be a midsize SUV. I think we were "upgraded" to a full size. I told dh if that happened again we weren't taking the larger vehicle. It was overkill for the two of us, and used more gas.

Yes, to the no charge upgrade when out of my reserved class car.
This day, NO cars. Reservation was for noon. I waited until 1. Was told no cars until 4 pm. My appt was at 2:30. This was a neighborhood location, so nothing Hertz related nearby. Finally made an online reservation with Enterprise. I will give the Hertz guy credit for transporting me to Enterprise.

I posted this just before calling Hertz Customer Service to see what they would do for my inconvenience. Apart from refunding my card for prepayment charge, Nada -- zip. Said I would have to communicate online with their customer relations dept.

No cars is insane. Someone in logistics should be fired. There should be something in inventory unless you are in the hinterlands. This past Saturday, I had reserved intermediate size car at Budget. Long line. Everyone was moving well. When I got up to the front, they didn't have any more intermediate cars available. But I could get a SUV for $4/day more. I said "No." The lady said it could be some while until a car became available, and she would check out back. Three minutes later she came back and said there was a newly washed car available. We go out back to the car and it was bone dry. Others were passing by us with water dripping off. Go figure.:ponder:

Happens to us frequently. One time at Honolulu airport, waited an hour for a car to become available (last year). Then 2 out of the last 3 times I rented a car at the Sacramento airport last year, I had to wait more than an hour. Each time it was Budget or Avis. This coming trip to Sacramento in April, I have booked Alamo.

I hope you are planning on communicating with their customer relations department. Instead of waiting to see if they offer something tell them what you want. Do you want them to pay for your rental with Enterprise? Do you want some kind of discount on a future Hertz reservation?

The most similar thing that has happened to me in my years of traveling was arriving at a Sheraton Hotel in Houston, somewhere along the Katy Freeway, at 1:00 am (with an 8:00 am meeting the next morning), and was turned away because they didn't have any rooms. What was even more galling was that I had called about noon to advise them that i was going to be arriving late, and they said no problem. (And, yes, the reservation was a late arrival secured with a credit card.). They instead directed me to a La Quinta Inn about ten miles closer to downtown.

And I had to pay for the room at the La Quinta. They didn't charge my credit card, but I'm sure that if I hadn't showed up they would have charged me for the room. When I complained to Sheraton afterward they apologized, but offered no compensation, and complained about how unfortunate it was that they had to send a customer to one of their competitors.

FWIW - the night desk clerk (and, as we all know, the night desk positions are so coveted that only the elite and most knowledgeable staffers fill those slots and :p). Said that a group of people at the hotel that were scheduled had refused to check out, and that under Texas law the hotel couldn't evict them.

Returning to rental cars, there was a time a few years back when I had a reservation at my neighborhood Hertz location. It's one of those places in the lobby of a hotel, where they have at most two people around, and often only one person. So that staff does all of the work, including getting cars washed, and filling gas tanks. Also, they sometimes get involved with ferrying cars between locations to meet reservations.

I rent from that shop regularly; I'm on a first name basis with the crew, and they've given me outstanding service over the years. And they are usually very good about scheduling their errands so that there is someone around or in the vicinity when there is a scheduled pickup.

This time I arrived and there was no one there. When I called the number provided for times when the office wasn't staffed (goes to the cell phone for whomever is on duty), there was no answer, I waited half an hour, calling the contact number periodically without answer.

I had an appointment to get to, so finally I gave up and walked across the parking lot to the Avis counter at a hotel next door, and did a walk-in rental at that location. Apparently I was the second or third person that morning to have had that problem.

National ran out of cars completely in New Orleans. Didn't have any the next morning either. Nor did any other agency. We ended up renting from a car dealer.

Haha my craziest story long these lines: I had to go to New Orleans for work, I was serving on a very busy committee that was convening all day long, well into each night, in association with a professional convention that was taking place at the Hilton. I’m flying in around midnight the night before we need start our committee work so I call to let the Hilton know.

I arrive and the clerk hands me a key and off I go. When I get up to the room, the door is ajar. As a woman traveling alone, I’m creeped out and return to the front desk to ask for a different room- I have visions of a rapist in the closet or one of those porn webcam things. The clerk tells me my room was the last available but he’ll send security up to check the room out.

Two minutes later, security calls back to say the room is fine. Um, no way had enough time elapsed that the room was really checked. I’m telling myself to be reasonable, not to be paranoid. But I just have a bad feeling about that room.

I tell the clerk I’m uncomfortable and he offers me a room with no bed. What? The bed is pretty much the crux of what I’m looking for from the Hilton in this particular stay. I tell him I’m not interested in a room without a bed.

I ask to be walked to another hotel. He gets snippy with me, now I’m digging in my heels. Finally he agrees to walk me to the Hyatt. It’s not convenient to the conference but whatever. I collect my cab money from the clerk and off I go.

I get to the Hyatt, get my room key and head up to my room. No bed. Are you f-in kidding with me? Who even knew you could get a hotel room without a bed?

I’m exhausted by this point and call down to the front desk. I’m told to sleep in the pull-out sofa bed (which I get to make up myself). The clerk tells me that he told the Hilton clerk that’s all he had available. Of course the guy was just trying to get rid of me.

By now this saga has been going on for two hours and I’m exhausted. I ask to speak to a manager, am on the verge of tears. The manager tries weakly to get me to accept the bedless hotel room, then he relents and gives me a really sweet club floor corner room.

I still can’t say I was being entirely reasonable but my hackles were up when I saw the room door ajar and I just couldn’t get past it. It worked out in the end, but was really creepy at the time.

I've had this happen when I showed up too early in a city location (Bristol UK) but not at an airport. They had NO cars and I had to come back 3 hours later when my reservation was actually for.

My ex traveled on business a lot but was 4 foot 11. They'd offer to upgrade her to something full-size, but she couldn't reach the pedals....

Flying into Vegas around midnight ahead of the New Years activities a few years ago, we found a few ppl in line when we arrived at the car rental counter because no reserved sizes were available. After about an hour waiting for expected returns to come in, the counter guy and his mgr offered us a car one size smaller plus a discount on the rental which we took because it was getting into the early morning already by then.

We reserved a 7 passenger minivan. They tried to give us a small 5 person SUV. We said we have no choice but to wait. So they offered us an 18 passenger full size van. Husband said we should take it and spend our vacation transporting foreign tourist around the island. I assume he was joking but I'm still not sure.

Happened to us in San Fran last year. No cars of any kind. We were 8th in line. They were telling everyone they were expecting cars anytime, but had nothing. And if there was anyone in the line that were walk-ups, they should leave because they were only giving cars out to those with confirmed reservations.

That got us up to 5th in line. Some ahead of us were larger groups that had to have a larger car, so since we were two, we jumped ahead and got a compact that was returned after waiting ONLY about an hour and a half. We drove off with what looked to be 20 groups in line waiting.

I now always get a backup reservation with a pickup time one hour later.
