All,

I am doing a quick in-and-out to Boston for business and am staying here. Wow -- what a property. Tremendous location and beautiful room (and view). Love this place! Definitely a place to return with the family (or just the lovely wife) when the time is right.

I vote for more properties like this one!!!

Best,

Greg

Agreed!!! That's what the Pulse brand should strive to be, but sadly the rooms, locations and value per point at Pulse locations elsewhere just don't stack up to CH standards.

We also love Custom House. Great historic property. Wonderful views. Fantastic location. What's not to like?

Greg, thanks for the update on Custom House. We’ve been to Boston but haven’t stayed at CH. We will have to consider returning there to experience the resort, and revisit the city.

Enjoy your time there.

Best regards.

Mike

We stayed there last year in October and loved it. Take your wife next time and stay a week. Drive out in the surrounding area and see the leaves change colors also.

We own a CH odd year platinum that we purchased really cheap and while the MFs aren't cheap, now $1845, we love the location and the flexibility to break up the week by the day if desired. We're happy with the EOY and think it's perfect frequency to visit. This year we used 5 days and rented 2 days for $625 which was a nice offset to our costs. We took in a Red Sox - Yankee game at Fenway which is such a wonderfully nostalgic ball park and walked back to the CH.

Greg and others, you are all experiencing now what we've already come to know since our first trip in 2013, and it's been confirmed and solidly engrained with each subsequent stay. As I previously hinted at on TUG (and perhaps privately to many), Custom House is without a doubt my favorite Marriott property (we've visited most of them). It's so unique. The location is perfect, within several blocks of THE places everyone wants to be. So close to the famous North End restaurants to which we walk every evening for dinner, and across the street from the T (the user-friendly Boston subway system). We use the T a good bit when headed, say, to Harvard Yard and the cafes around that area, or to browse around the shops and cafes along the cobbled streets of Beacon Hill, not to mention gawking at the gorgeous brownstones there, some of which are occupied no doubt by a few famous dignitaries and icons in American life.

So my confession may blow out of the water the perspective I seem to have created on TUG for the past 20 years, because I have been known mostly for my adoration of of Grande Ocean at Hilton Head. We still spend a lot of time there because of our 6 ownership weeks, but it's not our only destination by any means.
I must say that we have fallen head over heels in love with Boston, and Custom House in particular. The architecture is uniquely amazing, the feel of the property is special like nothing else, it's such a luxurious and comfortable place, and the list of great things to do in the immediate area are simply too numerous to list. We adore "walking the city", dining in any of the dozens of known fantastic favorite restaurants (and trying new ones), exploring and re-exploring the historical sites of the area, shopping on Newbury and Boylston Streets (and others), visiting the smaller and/or historic towns outside Boston on day or half-day trips (Concord, Lexington, Newport, and up the Maine coast), and in general basking in Boston's world-class cultural aspects which are offered in abundance.

For instance, we love the museums and we love the symphony (will be attending the Holiday Pops in 2 months). We're also prime suckers for the touristy sites along the Freedom Trail, and we never tire of seeing those. And, we simply love the people. So we will be going back this Fall for the 4th time in the last 5 years, and we are as giddy as school children in anticipation of that upcoming trip. Dinner reservations have already been secured, and I dare say that we've already loosely planned the activities for each day. Each year we plan a different type itinerary while mixing in a few old favorites. For the second straight year we're meeting up with another TUG couple whom we've grown to love for our final 2 days at Custom House, and can't wait to see them.

We even have a special friend (it would demean him now to call him our "driver" because he's become much more than that) who picks us up from the airport when we fly in, and he takes us back when we leave. He will also take us anyplace we happen to be going when we have the need---like to the Pops. We text-message each other throughout the year just for fun, and he sends special regards on random occasions like my wife's birthday or on holidays (and any other day for no good reason). Knowing him is priceless, and a big part of the reason we regard Boston as so special. It's become funny now when we're there because he seems to spot us walking along any random street during the course of his duties while carrying other clients, so he honks his horn and we immediately know it's him!

Talk about special! Last year he called me from his cell phone unannounced and in a loud Boston brogue he shouts,
"Hey Marty (he says Moddy), what's in the bag?"

WHAT??? How did he know that???
We had been shopping and from his car he saw the big bag I was carrying. I never saw him. How cool is that? That wasn't the only time we ran across each other while out and about. AND, he delivered a big box of chocolates to Custom House for my wife TWICE during our stay. AND, he dropped by a favorite Italian restaurant of ours in North End (he knows the owner) and got us a fantastic table with "the best" waiter on staff for our upcoming dinner, and he arranged for our receiving a free dessert. Absolutely priceless. So he makes us feel pretty special.

We know several of the front desk staff members at Custom House now, to some degree, and I'll just say "more nice things happen" during the course of our stay. They are wonderful. So we are counting the days until we're back again. We actually have another favorite Fall trip prior to that, about which we're also thrilled, but we are more and more looking past it to our adopted "favorite big city" of Boston. The other place is much loved too, as I've mentioned here before----a non-timeshare----the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC, which we visit at least once every year in the Fall or early December (holiday magic!!!). Needless to say, we are the proverbial "Fall people", and we live for this time of year.

Grande Ocean/ Hilton Head is awesome in late Spring/early Summer (we stay at least 4 weeks every June and our kids grew up there), and now even a couple of extra bonus weeks in off-season Jan & Feb, and it's what we call "our home away from home", but it's "Boston soon" that we're truly drooling over again. (Some have "Boston Strong" T-shirts, but I made one that says "Boston Soon".)

I keep saying "we won't do Boston again for a while" each year, but something comes over me later and we book it again and again. What can I say? All of New England is beautiful, and worthy of frequent visits, but Boston has certainly become a heck of a lot of fun. For example our first order of business (and now a tradition) when we land is to walk over from Custom House to James Hook & Co on the harbor waterfront for the best clam chowder and lobster roll anywhere. It's a hole-in-the-wall trailer with a few tables inside and picnic tables outside, but Wow, we know we've arrived!!! And my wife would leave me if I tried to alter that tradition. (Thank you, "jont", for the recommendation of that little gem.)

As time moves on we'll increase our stays at the various Pulse locations (and similar new places like the boutique brand hotels) because of our experiences in Boston. But I suspect that Boston's Pulse is the best so far. It's a new and different type of vacation since we've become empty nesters, and it couldn't be better. A few people know me for my list of restaurants at Hilton Head, but I also have a list for Boston, tried and true. And in addition, Boston is so much fun that I also put together a "to do" list. (OK, London also.) So much to see, and so much to do.......enough that we'll be quite busy for a while, and then we'll just repeat.

All,

Great posts and I’m happy to see others have great experiences to share. Will definitely return here and will see if can get the clam chowder and lobster roll recommended by Moddy and JonT. This is a great spot!

Best,

Greg

I wish I could take some credit for James Hook, but I cant. It's all Beaglemom.

Boston, our hometown. Been away for 30 years but still visit often.

We stayed at the Custom House twice during our tenure with Marriott. Went back to Boston last year and stayed at the Sheraton Back Bay. Fine location (across from the Christian Science mother church which was an interesting tour), and Boston was still marvelous, but nothing compares to the Custom House.

Since Beaglemom was mentioned (thanks "jont"), I again feel compelled to praise her "mercilessly" for the unbelievable hospitality she showered upon us on our initial Boston visit in 2013 (could it really have been that long ago?). I wasn't going to say anything because of her humility and reluctance to be recognized, but I decided she should be honored in this simple fashion anyway because she truly deserves it.
Anyway, Beaglemom picked us up at our place and took us to the historic towns of Concord and Lexington, where we spent a good 30-50 minutes at each, walking around and viewing the battle sites, all the while viewing the gorgeous peaking Fall foliage (it was mid-October), then drove us to the famous Walden Pond which was associated with the writer Henry David Thoreau, drove us to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery ("Author's Ridge" where several famous authors are buried), drove us by Louisa May Alcott's home and a few more, visited a beautiful Shaker Village and museum called Fruitlands in the countryside (authentic homes and wonderful stories), stopped in to a country store along the side of the road amongst apple orchards to get hot cider and pastries at a produce stand (it was cold outside but the cider was deliciously HOT....wow!), then returned us home. I cannot even BEGIN to say how much we enjoyed that day, and appreciated her gracious and genuine efforts to show us all of the wonderful sites which we would probably never have the chance to see again. It was like experiencing a living history book, and we'll never forget it. And unbelievably our dear Jeanne was all the while sporting a big boot on her injured foot and could hardly move due to the discomfort and awkwardness. To this day I don't know how she did it, or why, but we are forever grateful. She's our hero, for sure. Jeanne, we love you and we'll never forget you!

Thank you jme for sharing that. I'm smiling ear to ear reading about your day. Beaglemom is quite a lady.

I’m sorry Marty, but I don’t believe it. It’s too good to be true.

Only way to cure it is for Beaglemom to repeat it. Is that possible? :)

Best,

Greg

Oh My .... for us it was the bed. It was terrible. We gave the room to friends after we left it and they said the same.

I often wonder if we just got "stuck" with something in our particular unit.

But all are correct - really cool building. Even then activities we took part in (free tours) were very good.

Oh it's all true, Greg. I left out a few things I'm sure, but I didn't embellish anything.

The day was filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, all amazing, enjoyable, fantastic-----all things I had seen in books and magazines my whole life but thought I'd never experience...... Each site was seemingly different and varied, but yet cohesive and interrelated because in "the big picture", it all came together as a wonderful collage of Massachusetts, both city and countryside......It was amazingly impressionable, indelibly so.

But the overriding point is this:
Beaglemom loves Boston. Beaglemom loves Massachusetts. Beaglemom loves New England.

She was so proud to show us everything she could....to show off her glorious "home" and all it had to offer. And remember, we were in the midst of the peak foliage season in mid-October, and that didn't disappoint. The brilliant trees and landscapes we saw throughout the countryside were the real stars. Photo-ops were around every corner, and I took advantage of them. I'm sure Jeanne's foot was tired of hitting the brake.

Did you know she is both a nurse and an attorney? And yet she took time to do this for us?
There is nothing I could say that could do her kindness justice.

I could go on and on, but she's one of the most giving and humble sweethearts I've ever met, so I won't embarrass her any further.
I have been very reluctant to say anything, but she's such a special lady in our minds and hearts, and she is THE real reason we fell in love with Boston, aside from the fact that "the Boston experience" has what it takes to back up its reputation and warrant its admiration. As we were enjoying each and every stop, she would just smile....no words necessary. I got it.

Maybe the most appropriate thing I could say at this moment is, "Hey, Jeanne, we're going back...again!!!"
Like I said previously, "Boston Soon" is on my favorite T-shirt. I think she'd smile at that.

I have a couple deposits with Interval of Vail Streamside Week 15 1BR, one expiring next spring, and since I didn't need it for Hawaii any longer I tried an OGS for Boston Pulse and got a Oct 18-26, 2018 the same day.

I'll start reading the Boston threads, as it's been awhile for me and my wife has never been to Boston.

I guess the big question is October good, bad, manageable from a weather standpoint? The usual questions, should I ask for anything specific from room control?

Based on the above comments, it should be a good trip.

Weather can be nice that time of year with a smaller chance it won't be. I ask for a high floor with harbour view. I think there are a lot of rooms that fit that bill.

Great info. Any suggestions on a sweet spot for a room floor? I thought I read somewhere that the Pulse/timeshare rooms are on the upper floors, just not sure which floor starts the progression.

Is Beaglemom someone we or the Concierge can contact for a day tour, or other suggestion?

I'm from Texas so dress-up means clean blue jeans or maybe khaki's. When eating out, other than real high-end restaurants, do I need to even think dress code or can I just be a tourist?

All of CH is timeshares, so any floor goes.

As for dress code, Boston is a very touristy city, so you will be good to go with anything you wear to pretty much anything/anywhere.

We’ve only been to CH once, but loved the buildings character, history, villas decor and location. Fantastic. I think all rooms are timeshare. The lower floors are larger with less of a view. Higher floors may have a view, but are smaller is sq ft. Either way, CH is a winner in my book!

Thanks everyone,

My biggest issue now will be figuring out how to get out of Texas, i.e., points or cash, how much leg room I want to pay for, and whether to go through Philadelphia, Newark or North Carolina. It's almost easier to get to Hawaii. ;-)
