TPG - The Points Guy visits WKORV

Not a bad review, but he has some of the common misconceptions about timeshares. Also - he apparently did not look at the address on his confirmation, because each front desk (north and south) has it's own address.

From my experience, SPG.com reservations do not tell you if you are at North or South.

So you get a confirmation with no resort name or address on it? How odd.

And turn up at one - wait in line - and... sorry... you are at other one?
That makes little sense.

I didn't read TPG article closely, but looked like his villa photo was north (?).

He didn't think the Westin was luxury? He should stay at our beloved Hono Koa and use it for comparison. Westin is very luxurious. What kind of a silver-spooner is that guy.

The Westin Ka’anapali is a stylish West Maui property with modern amenities and reasonable award prices. The Pros: comfortable rooms with kitchenettes and a beautiful, uncrowded beach. The Cons: not ideal for those seeking a true luxury experience.

We did a one night SPG stay ahead of our staroptions stay. The reservation had the south as our address but when we arrived we ended up having to go to the north phase. Interesting thing was they let us have six people in a one bedroom - apparently ok for a starpoints reservation but not with staroptions.

The villa picture in the review is definitely in the north phase.

I think the author might just have meant that it doesn't have some of the same luxury amenities and service that you might get at a classic luxury brand like St. Regis or Ritz Carlton.

Also, FYI, this article was written by a member of TPG's editorial staff, not The Points Guy himself. :)

I think @vistana101 is 100% correct.

It was a staff member and when TPG staff talk about luxury they set the bar high. Say St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort for hotels or Etihad Residences for flights.

Also, there is a major difference between a suite facility like WKOV and Nanea and a hotel. Apparently they don't realize this... (where's my Executive Floor and Executive Lounge (with free drinks, free food, etc.))???

LOL! I'm at the Rome Airport Hilton on the Executive floor, heading down to the lounge for a free meal of sorts right now...

though would rather be in Maui in a 1-bedroom suite myself... :)

Good point, these guys are deep into the top tier elite status of several chains and always compare high end elite benefits that go beyond a room with view (the suite upgrade is almost expected). Why do you need a kitchen if you are entitled to a lounge with food and drinks served for you?

They worry about having a hard time choosing between Krug or Don Perignon bubbly in the plane as opposed to getting miles to trave in southwest.

Hah hah. Really had to laugh about that.

That Hilton in Rome Italy (at the airport) though. All I can say is wow. Upgrade to deluxe room, executive club.. had snacks & wine/beer in the afternoon; a pretty filling meal in the evening (vegetable soup, spinach and cheese pasta, eggplant & peppers for a veggie, nice rolls, dessert)... they delivered a small snack to our room; and wonderful buffet breakfast with omelets made to order, cappuchino, fresh fruit, meats, almost everything you could think of for $150... free shuttle to Rome colosseum too. All free. And I'm only a Gold. Check out that Hilton if you travel that way....

Timeshares, however, are a different kettle of fish. Lovely in a different way.

It's a fair review. Villa vacationing is really for families and bring friends or family with you.
I wonder what he thought of the Grand Wailea? We thought it was NASTY when we spent 2 days there a few years ago. The lobby is very nice with great service even for such a HUGE property, but the room was OLD and it was a MESS at the pool. We couldn't even find a lounger to put our towels on at 9:30. Beach was super crowded too. The slides were old and and a little beat up too and after staying at Atlantis 3 years before, it was a let down.
.

Funny.
Clearly, this writer has never spent a week in a timeshare with a family that likes to eat all the time, drink all the time and can't afford dinner for six every night at a fine dining establishment. Not to mention that I'd be as big as a house if I ate at restaurants for every meal. Also, that quaint little BBQ grill on the patio is where we fix some of our best meals (restaurants included) and have the best drinks (mine) served with a sunset.

I will say though, the Ritz at Kapalua looks stunning. Of course, I could never stay that close to Merrimans.....I'd never leave.

I'm also guessing the points guy (writer) doesn't stay at Holiday Inn Express very much. My wife and I became physically ill after staying in one of those 'smokehouses' earlier this year. I know how a ham feels hanging in the barn now....
