Anyone have any dining suggestions near the Waikoloa Marriott. I am doing a 4-night stay as part of my Encore package I paid for last year. The main reason for buying the encore package was to get my 2 Marriott weeks enrolled in the Destinations point program for free, although I have not used the points program yet. The room they are giving me is in the hotel portion, not the timeshare portion. I think as of June all construction is finished.

Big Island restaurants, these are all places we’ve been and would recommend:

Starting at the “North” end and working south:

Havi:

Bamboo Restaurant – we’ve only been for lunch, be sure they are open (I think they’re closed on Mondays)

Kawaihae Harbor:

Café Pesto – they also have a location in Hilo

Waimea:

Merrimans

Lilikoi Café – this is a tiny little kind of take out place, some friends of ours who lived in Kona recommended it. Really good for lunch. Kind of hard to find, it’s hidden on the back side of a shopping center.

Village Burger – order at the counter and pick up at the counter. There is seating in the center where it’s located, the seating is for all of the food court type restaurants there. It is highly rated and does have a decent burger.

Waikoloa Resort area:

Sensai Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar - in the Queen’s Shopping Center. Had the best sushi roll I’ve ever had there. They have a pretty extensive menu, not just sushi.

Lava Lava Beach House – right on the beach, in fact you can sit in a table in the sand.

King's Grille Restaurant - on the golf course near Kingsland. We've only had breakfast there.

Waikoloa Village:

Pueo’s Osteria - very good Italian

Island Lava Java – a coffee place, but they have a nice menu. Ate dinner there our first night on the island. Not a fancy setting at all. The outdoor tables have a view of the parking lot.

Kohala coast resorts (these are all pricey, the food is good but we go for the atmosphere):

Four Seasons Hualailai – Ulu Ocean Grill, there is also the Beach Tree Bar (I’ve been there for lunch, not dinner)

Fairmont Orchid - Brown’s Beach House

Mana Lani - Canoe House

I included Lava Lava on my list but forgot to add, be sure to make a reservation ahead of time. We found it difficult to get in for dinner.

I will second most of Luanne's suggestions.

Personalty i have found the food at Lava Lava a bit hit and miss, but you overall vibe and energy is great, and the sunset views are outstanding. Its just a short walk along the A-Bay beach from the Marriott.

Kamuela Provision Company / KPC at the big Hilton also has outstanding sunset views, though they started charging extra to reserve an outdoor seat.

We recently tried Tommy Bahama at the Mana Lani shops and were surprised at how good it was. We were traveling with friends and one was a vegetarian. They had solid menu with a number of vegetarian options, which was surprising hard to find in Hawaii.

Roy's has been good in the past. But I have not been there since they have become a national chain, and not just a local Hawaiian Restaurant.

I was so disappointed with KPC when I was there in April. The surf and turf was expensive and when they brought it to me, it was literally the size of airline food.

The filet was maybe he size of a silver dollar and the lobster tail was the size of a large shrimp.

There is a little coffee and breakfast place up in the town of Waikoloa next to the grocery store.

The macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup were amazing.

We tried KPC once. Expensive and not all that impressive. Again, if you get a view table the setting is lovely.

For the coffee and breakfast place in Waikoloa near the grocery store are you thinking of Island Lava Java? It's good, we had a late lunch/early dinner there on one of our trips.

The Roy's in Waikoloa has no real charm, in my opinion. It's in the King's Shopping Center, no view, not on the water, portions were small and it's noisy.

We are going to stay at the Wailokoa Beach Club in November. Any recommendations for a party of six (including two kids) for Thanksgiving dinner?

I think you are correct with Island Lava Java. Excellent!

Mauna Lani has a lovely Thanksgiving Buffet which is great for large groups. Most of the resort restaurants are open, but the local places will be closed on Thanksgiving. Merriman's Waimea may be open for Thanksgiving, but you will need to reserve well in advance.

I agree the shopping center location detracts a bit, but my recollection is that it does have a view of the lake on the Waikoloa Beach Course golf course - not the ocean, but not terrible.

Our fondest recollection of Roy's Waikoloa was the white chocolate martini after dinner drink made by a bartender there about 10 to 12 years ago. Sadly, the next time we visited that bartender had moved on and the new bartender's version was not nearly as good.

Agree 100% with these observations about Lava Lava and Tommys. Appeals to my inner cheapskate.

I prefer to pick up the Ono fish sandwich at the Queens marketplace food court and walk to the beach, been doing since well before those beach cottages and lava lava showed up. Good beach to see turtles.

The Mauna Lani shops have a free hula show to catch after dinner at Tommys for a low cost luau. There is a really nice path to the beach just past the shops, trailhead is at the visitor parking lot.

If the OP had a kitchen I'd suggest getting food from the Island Gourmet Market in the Queen's shops. They have some great selections. We'd get marinated meats for the bar-be-que and I got addicted to their poke.

We just toured the new Timeshare units at the Marriott last week, they are all hotel conversations and no kitchens in the units. They were still doing lots of renovations to resort, not sure if they will be adding any BBQ's, but i did not see any last week.

That definitely sounds disappointing..

I have only done fish when eating there, and its always been OK, but I agree its expensive.

To pay as much as you do at KPC and to have it be only "okay" isn't okay with me. I will sacrifice view and ambiance for a good meal, but I'm unwilling to sacrifice a good meal just for the view.
