Ok, I know the standard mantra about "You can tell a timeshare salesperson is lying when their lips are moving." So I wanted to run this by the TUG experts. Twice when I have attended "owner updates", the salesperson has told me if I bought the smallest points contract available directly from Wyndham, that my resale points become "adopted" (my word) and have all the benefits as though they were purchased from Wyndham instead of resale and I could use my resale points together with the developer contract with no differentiation between the two. By "benefits", they specifically mentioned being able to book at the World Mark properties and being eligible for using points accumulated on a Wyndham credit card to pay maintenance fees.

So, what say the Wyndham experts on TUG?? Thus far I have not succumbed to the salespersons' siren songs, but have been tempted that it might be worth shelling out a few thousand for a developer purchase, if it makes all my resale points equivalent.

Thanks!

Not sure about the Worldmark thing. I believe that only the points purchased directly from Wyndham can be used with what they call the club pass internal exchange program

But all that other stuff is already the case with resale points. They work just like developer sold points at the Wyndham resorts and in RCI

Resale points would be "adopted" in the same account but they still would not be VIP eligible and you would only be able to book the Worldmark properties with your VIP eligible points.

If you have a relatively small resale points package currently, I could imagine Wyndham taking them back and saying that they are giving you equity for them and then sell you a new package which would be 100% eligible. Trick would be that even without your current package if you negotiated, you probably could have gotten the same price.

The Sales managers regularly have regional meetings to exchange NEW means of getting owners to part with their hard earned dollars or spend their retirement money.

Got to love the idea ... buy more high dollar cost points from ME (the sales person) to make your cheap (so, you think "you are smarter than me" resale) points can be adopted. Works for dogs, cats and kids ... NOT for Wyndham points.

And I bet, those adopted points would be shown as the next level of VIP ... because, the sale's manager would make sure your account would get a ONE TIME bundle of Bonus Points ... and those Bonus Points, would be what MOVE YOU UP to the higher VIP class.

I'd be interested to find out definitively on the Worldmark question. Although, it would likely be cheaper to just find a separate resale Worldmark and not worry about being able to book Worldmark with Wyndham points. The Worldmark resale units usually sell for quite a bit more and are available less frequently than Wyndham.

Regarding using the Wyndham credit card points to pay maintenance fees; they told me if you didn't own developer purchased points, the credit card point value toward maintenance fees for resale points was about equivalent to using your regular timeshare points to pay maintenance fees (definitely only last-resort, going-to-expire-otherwise option). But if you own developer purchased points, the ratio was more like a point was equivalent to a dollar toward maintenance fees and could be used at that ratio for paying the maintenance fees on both the resale and developer purchased points.

The definitive answer is only VIP eligible points can book Worldmark through Wyndham. If your contract doesn't say that this purchase will make your current points VIP eligible points, then you will only be able to use the newly purchases retail points to book Worldmark.

That's not true

Any developer purchased points can be used with club pass

Yes, but they are VIP eligible which I mean as they are owned Wyndham points (not bonus points) and they count toward VIP status levels. Sorry I did not mean VIP eligible to mean that you had to be VIP.

The cheaper way to Worldmark is to buy a Worldmark ownership on the secondary market

Worldmark credits are good for 2 years and you can borrow from a future allocation so you can save up to make that one special vacation every two or three years and they allow some transfer of credits from other owners so if you need more credits you can "rent" credits to take the occasional Worldmark vacation

Both

Both Ron and Tschwa are right. Had to look it up as I learn something new every time I read TUG. You can access Worldmark resorts only with developer points. You do NOT need to be VIP. So, if you only owned a 105k contract bought from Wyndham you still can book Worldmark. However, you will also incur a $99 exchange fee for each reservation you make at Worldmark. Ron's last post sums it up. If you want Worldmark, buy Worldmark separately.

I received a recommendation from a salesman recommending that I purchase a small developer contract before purchasing resale points so that my Wyndham number wouldn't be marked as resale. It's there any benefit to that?

I'm under the impression that it shouldn't matter.

A) ... You were listening to a Wyndham salesperson.

B) ... If the timeshare salesperson's lips are moving, they are lying.

C) ... It is the individual contracts that are marked at RESALE .. the member number points only to what your bank code is, to suck the MFs directly from your account.

I own both. Here are some additional benefits to consider when weighing buying a WM resale contract vs a developer purchase to access WM via Club Pass.

1. Ability to book at 13 months vs the 9 months via Club Pass. For a number of WM resorts in the summer, it will be very rare to find anything available to book inside nine months. ie almost any of the WA, CA, or OR coastal resorts in summer. Or Yellowstone. For whatever reason, I find the WM system is much more competitive than Club Wyndham.

2. Access to Bonus Time and Inventory Specials - which are cash alternatives to booking using your credits. This is last minute and excess inventory which can be booked at rates comparable to dues. Available to all members.

3. On a mf basis Wyndham owners pay about a third more when exchanging into WM given the 16.5 pts = 1 WM credit exchange rate.

4. Ability to waitlist for a reservation.
