Hi!

I am thinking of maybe purchasing the Newport coast legacy weeks platinum weeks. Does anyone know if it is easy to trade to most Marriott destinations within the II? Or are the inventory now limited for owners that hold the legacy weeks?

Thanks!

Marilyn

Marriott essentially runs 2 timeshares systems, Legacy weeks and Trust points (not even addressing overseas issues). Thus it'll vary with the resort to a degree. The only crossover options that come to mind are to exchange in through II, RCI in a few cases, a private trade, destination/trust points or an independent exchange company. I doubt there are a lot of trust deposits for the higher end options but at this time it appears to me that the weeks side is still very functional. If you reserve a top week, deposit a full year out and put in requests a full year or more out; your chances of success are very good for almost everything. There are certain resorts and times that were always an issue and will continue to be including HI, ski weeks and the like. That said we've had several exchanges to Maui, Oahu, MB, Grande Ocean and never had a time when we didn't get what we wanted/needed in some fashion.

I wouldn't purchase a platinum Newport Coast week to trade. It would be a buy to use kind of thing. There are better and cheaper Marriott traders given the inventory usually available in II. If you plan to use NCV most years and only trade every once Ina while, then you should be okay with trading. The full 2BR will give you decent trades and NCV platinum is always a tough trade.

Contrary to some opinions.... Marriott Legacy weeks are very much alive.

Points are higher (junk fees), and have some flexibility that weeks don't. But, The only 'centscible' way to own points (IMHO) is minimum purchase (~1500) and rent more as required. Not the smoothest total option.

Legacy weeks allow for lock-offs and flex (<59 day) trading. Lower initial cost and reasonable MF's (depending on location.

I've been very impressed by what my legacy weeks can pull. But, you do need some faith and flexibility.

Ditto the comments ^-----^ on not buying NCV unless you intend to occupy. If there is a location you would frequently use (locally) then it makes more sense--especially if you need platinum dates and/or early (12 mos) reservations.

cheers....

Marriott has always been a tale of 2 sides, resorts to own to use/rent and resorts to own to trade. For this situation buying 2 might be best. One might also buy something that is a much better trade option with a lockoff that works to use the 13 month reservation window for the one to use.

As we did..... :D

Thank you so much for the responses. :). Yes. I was thinking of purchasing the Newport coast as we are about 2 hours away and it would be more of a yearly local vacation.

We currently also own a westin kaanapali ocean resort every odd year. We have been there 3 times and my husband is starting to get a bit tired of the island. My thoughts were to probably resale back the westin and purchase the Marriott Newport coast. My question is how likely would we be able to trade the Newport coast platinum to a Marriott in Hawaii(Maui, Oahu, or Kauai)if we do decide to want to go back?

Thanks!!!

I'm sure there are those out there with specific info on trading NCV. In general getting a 2 BR for Maui will be tough but Oahu and Kauai shouldn't be too difficult if one puts in the request a good 12-13 months out. The problem with places that have lockoff's is the often the deposits are split up as well. For Westin I'd be inclined to keep it and rent it and maybe use it every 4 to 6 years. I'm presuming you have the Westin points so I'd also be inclined to keep it and use those as well. HI represents the problem with exchanging in general, top options for high demand and peak times are simply not going to be overly available. Just like I don't exchange my Grande Ocean Platinum weeks (or for destination points), I either use them or rent them. I have other options I use for exchanging. I do have exchange requests initiated for summer 2018 for HI for all 3 islands using Legend's Edge and Branson. Your chances should be a fair amount better than mine using NCV. 2017 deposits, exchanges set up but I'll need to adjust the dates to get so summer 2018. The one advantage I have over your situation is that one of my Branson weeks I deposited as a lockoff so I can take the smaller villas and still be OK.

I think the real key is timing: when would you want to go? late Jan-Mar can be tough. If you can accept shoulder season OR can accept reservations at less than 90 days (preferably less than>59 days) you can take your pick of Kauai resorts and some Ko Olina/MOC (not mm1); maybe just not 2br every time. I've been seeing Aug and Nov-Dec availability on MKO with regular frequency.

Just depends on what you want....
