Due to the recent rumblings about Britain leaving the EU (as I understand it)

it is at 1.4129 as I type this.

Watching this as we travel to London with some frequency

Should be interesting. I may buy some today depending on how this trends.

Are you going to invest the British pounds? You may find you are better just investing your US dollars and waiting till you need the money in British pounds. If you are just talking about a little walking around money then do it just so you feel you got a deal. Anything more and you become a currency speculator with no where to keep the money invested while you sit on it

Watching with interest as well, with an upcoming trip there. This runs counter to my usual advice to not stockpile foreign currency ahead of arrival on the soil of where it will be used.

No, I did not say that I was investing or speculating in GBPs. Buying "some" as I travel to London.
I am savvy enough to know the difference.

ETA: Would like to do better than the usual 1.52 - 1.55 rate. Multiply this by 1,000 GBPs and I've saved a little more than $100.

My exact thoughts. I would like to get some for my next trip as well.

Money saved can go towards a show, dinner or tour is how I look at it.

Yes you would be saving money now but losing out on the return on that money if you otherwise had it invested in USD. No way to say what will give you a better return but investing in stocks overall is positive where currency trading is a zero sum game.

But like I said what you are doing seems like a great deal.

Have a great trip.

Thanks ! Will do.

Bonds, currency trading and futures are out of my knowledge base. I will stick with what I know which is basic investing.

I still have about 20 Euros left from a trip to France in 2013. I think I got them at 1.00 USD in 2006 (found them in my backpack). I have about 40 GBPs from my last trip to England as well. I tend to keep these due to the service charges at both ends when buying/selling.

Headed to London in 2 months. I'm wondering if most people still recommended just going to an ATM when I arrive to get local currency.

Maintenance fees

Yay! Our maintenance fee for our timeshare in Scotland is posting to our credit card this week! This is the lowest is has been in a very long time.

GBP = 1.39 USD as/of this post.

Wow, that is a huge difference in just a few weeks. I am going to check on the Euro right now!

Euro is $1.10, according to xe.com.

Has anyone noticed USD to Rand exchange? 1 to 15! I have not seen USD that strong against Rand (or any other currency for that matter) since the craze of buying SA timeshares and paying M/Fs. We plan to visit South Africa next year. Perhaps we should stock up on Rand now? ;)

That's what I've been doing for over 40 years. I always use an ATM card that has no withdrawal fees for pocket money and a credit card with no forex fees for almost every expense. The amount I can save / loose on pre-buying £'s or €'s is minimal in my total for a trip. ;). YMMV:D

Cheers
