When my husband and I were on our honeymoon in NO about 39 years ago we ate at a marvelous place that was in a house in the Garden District, I think. We took a trolley to get there and I think the house was on the street that the trolley went down.

When we arrived we were seated in the parlor with the other diners and the whole experience was as if we were invited guests at someone's home. The hostess escorted us to the dining room and I think the food was served family style, but I don't remember for sure.

It seems like the name was something like Aunt Somebody's House or something similar. I don't even know how we found out about it.

Anyway, our daughter and son-in-law are going to NO for the first time in February and I think they'd enjoy the place if it still is in operation. Does anyone know of such a place?

I don't know that place, but in the same area is the Commander's Palace Restaurant, which is really nice, but a little pricey.

Also in that same general area is the Rum House on Magazine, which is much more casual with great Caribbean food ($2 taco Tuesday, yum).

I looked on Yelp and don't see anything like you describe, but sounds like a great place, so I'm hoping someone knows if it's still open.

I, too, thought of Commander's Palace first. I don't know of anything as far back as you do, my NOLA time only goes back as far as the 1990's. By that time Commander's was much larger, perhaps what it is today. But it is possible that in its earlier years it was much as what you describe. There was a "garden room" downstairs, which could have been where you ate.

Commander's is one block from the streetcar line (aka "trolley"). Coming from Canal, you would cross the tracks and walk down the street to the left. There was a cemetary roughly across the street, through some gates. Does any of this sound familiar?

Not really. As I recall we got off the trolley very near the house and it was a lovely old house that seemed like it was in just a neighborhood, not a commercial block. It was in the middle of the block and not on a corner.

I've looked at the Commander's Palace website and at the picture of the building and it doesn't seem like the place we went to.

Wish I could even remember the name of it!

Karen,
Commander's Palace is not in a commercial block at all. It is in the middle of a block. On a side street, Washington I think. Was the place you are thinking about directly on St. Charles?

You might want to post a question about it on the NOLA Forums. You'd post to the Uptown/Garden District section.

HTH.

Emeril's DelMonico

I believe you may be thinking of Emeril's Delmonico at 1300 St Charles Avenue. You can ride the trolley right to the front door of this restaurant. My husband and I were there more than 10 years ago, so I don't know if it is still the same. It was a lovely house and we had a very special meal. We rode the streetcar there.

Emeril's wasn't there 39 years ago. Probably almost nothing was.

My first thought would be Camellia Grill.

Actually, it might have been in that location according to this description I found on their website:

Located on the famed St. Charles Avenue streetcar line, Delmonico, the legendary, century-old institution, is an icon in the restaurant industry and has been a cornerstone of traditional Creole dining since 1895. Reopened by Emeril Lagasse in 1998 after an extensive historic renovation, Delmonico continues today serving a modern style of Louisiana's Creole cuisine with Emeril's warm style of service in a grand setting.

Karen,
Delmonico is on a corner. Perhaps the place you went to was near there and became part of Delmonico during the rebuilding?

Camilla Grill isn't on St. Charles, and now we know that Karen has said the place was on St. charles

I know it isn't directly on St. Charles, but it's on the St. Charles street car line right at the turn on to Carrolton.
