Keurig warning

Since I know there are other Keurig owners on Tug, I'm submitting this warning. My best friend just told me that a friend of hers had a house (kitchen) fire that the fireman said was due to her Keurig. Of course this is not a formal report after an investigation. But it was apparently an electrical fire and the only things plugged into the outlet were an iHome and the Keurig. The Keurig is the logical suspect because it is always on.

I know that one of the advantages of the Keurig is that there is always hot water available without waiting. Nevertheless, after this incident I have decided that I will turn off my machine after I have my last cup of coffee in the morning. If I want decaf or tea in the evenings, I will just turn it back on. It doesn't really take that much time to heat up.

Just thought this was something some of you would be interested to hear.

We use one at work, but it is always off when not using. There are just a couple of us in the office.

The thought of always leaving ours on has NEVER crossed my mind!

Same here Bucky. We never leave any of our small appliances plugged in.

I leave it plugged in, but off, when not in use. It has an on/off switch in the back. I unplug it only when I am away from home for a period of time.

You can purchase a switch at the outlet and plug any device into it.
That way you don't have to plug and unplug the device which causes wear and not depend on the switch on the device to protect you.

Had mine attached to a timer which was manufactured to be on only 45 minutes ... push the button on timer and turn K-machine on via its switch on back of coffee maker.... If I forget to turn coffee maker off, SWITCH cuts the power --- usually before I am out the door to work.

Most Kuerigs have a built in off-time as well as auto-on and auto-off settings. Utilizing these settings to minimize the unattended "on" time will help, but not defeat the risk.

All Kuerigs have an on-off switch and a cord (that you can pull).

I've been running a Kuerig now for (hmm) 8yrs plus, I think? Never had a single issue--other than the unit eventually failing to brew coffee.

There is some indication that some of these coffee pots have caught fire or melted down--probably due to solenoid failure--but the same applies for ALL hot water devices of this type. They are high-wattage appliances that can fail and self-ignite.

Probably a better warning is this: If you have a high-wattage appliance, plugged-in and turned on for extended periods of time, unattended, you may have a fire hazard in your home. Additionally, if that appliance is parked under curtains, cabinets or contained inside a wooden/plastic/flammable box or piece of furniture--you definitely have a fire hazard. Go look inside your house and see how many of these items you have today. A bunch is my guess.

It's all about the risk....I'll take a Kuerig vs a Mr. C in my timeshare anyday.

Bought a kuerig 2.0 to replace my pervious one that stopped filling up cups even after numerous attempts to descale. On sale for $99
It has a power button on the screen, I sure hope that off really turns it off.... It seems to boil / heat whe I turn it on.... And ya its under a cabinet eeeeks. Oh I was able to fool the DRM with a pink posted note in a plastic baggy.... Ya one for the little guy! I prefer my own coffee :)

Good point. A few years back I had a space heater which was turned off melt down the socket into which it was plugged. Fortunately I was home when I discovered it. It was hot as heck when I found it. Who knows what could have happened if I was gone for an extended period.

I don't have any appliances ON under a cabinet/counter. But you know, a fire can start from any electrical source. When I lived in Antioch, our living room began to fill with smoke, and we called the fire department. Turned out our ceiling fan had developed a short after being in for several years. Luckily we had some thoughtful firemen, and after feeling around on the ceiling, they decided there was no fire YET. So instead of chopping the ceiling, they disassembled the fan for us, piece by piece. I couldn't believe they were so good to us!

Our home Keurig is plugged in, but turned off after our morning coffees. Never leave it on all day. At work, the Keurig is unplugged at the end of the workday.

Ours is a B70 we bought about 6 years ago. It seems to switch off on its own and to turn it on you have to turn the switch on the back and wait until the 'ready' light comes on. Are you saying its not really off and is still a hazard?

Our B70 is now only giving half cups regardless of all we've tried to do, including the paper clip idea, but to get a full cup we need to open the lid, close it and press the button again. We bought the Keurig 'make your own' accessory for the B70 but haven't bought the 2.0 model because it apparently doesn't accept it any more...and won't take the McD K-cups either. I assume that's the DRM thing you mentioned above. Could you elaborate on how it is fixed 'for the little guy'?

The older units (B70 etc..) had a minor leak inside. That (or scale) tended to cause the motor or solenoid to freeze--rendering the unit inoperative. The typical failure involves the inability to completely fill the cup. If your unit fits this description, you can try to descale it to solve the problem, but it probably won't work.

I just bought a new 2.0 at Costco. They are wonderful. Yes, they have the DRM technology, but it's easy to defeat.

Rogers family coffee (San Francisco Bay coffee) now includes a small plastic clip (freedom ring) that installs on your machine to defeat the DRM. Furthermore, they now are manufacturing cups that have DRM defeating tech. built in. I highly recommend their products: more environmentally friendly, cheaper and (if you keep them sealed) very fresh. They are available at some discount stores, Amazon and directly from their website. I like fogchaser. The costco machine is a good bargain right now; it's on sale/rebate and comes with coffee and filters.

Ekobrew sells cups which work with 2.0. They require a freedom ring or sticker (check amazon, lots of examples) but allow you to use your own coffee. I think BB&B may sell these in the store now in several varieties. Ez Cup too: they even have an adapter that takes tiny paper filters (ezy to clean) and makes carafes in the 2.0 (4 cups).

I love my Kuerig and stand by it. I hate that they decided to use DRM as a 'cheat' on their patent, but it's easy to defeat, so there you go.

good luck!

Not trying to scare anybody: Anything plugged in can fail and cause problems. Period. Unlikely with a 'mechanically switched' product (hard on/off switch) but still possible. Much easier with any 'electronically switched' product. Keep in mind, all the electronics in your house are probably in the last category and plugged in all the time. That being said: if you have a high wattage appliance (1200 watts plus--like a coffee maker) that is not working properly (like your Kuerig) you should not leave it plugged in and probably should get rid of it. If it's not working right, it's a lot more prone to failure; don't you think?

Just my 2c.

I never went the Keurig route as I drink about 5 cups of coffee between the time I get up in the morning and 10 am. I assume that with a Keurig I would have to brew each cup one at a time. Seems simpler to me to just brew a pot on my Mr. Coffee.

The new Kuerigs (2.0) have a Kcarafe pot that comes with the unit: you can utilize a 4-cup pod to brew 4 cups of coffee into the carafe. Not sure if thats 'american' cups or ???

The Kuerig kcarafe pods (some come with the costco units in the box) are quite expensive to buy--but there is now a do-it-yourself pod that holds the 4-cups worth of coffee.

You're right: sometimes I enjoy brewing a pot. But not at 430am on my way to work...two cups in my travel mug is perfect.

I actually haven't tried the kcarafe yet....we'll see if it works.
