Should I Turn Off Power on Printer at Night?

I just dumped my 10 year old $30 HP Ink Jet printer and bought a new Canon Laser printer. Should I leave it on forever or should I turn it off at night?

George

I guess it depends on some variables: How much printing do you do? Are you more concerned with power consumption, or being able to print at a moment's notice. Are you able to wait a half a minute or so for it to heat the drum before printing? Do the instructions that came with it offer any suggestions?

I just leave my (Brother) laser printer on 'standby' all the time. It seems to take 15-30 seconds to warm up before it starts rolling out finished pages.

Nothing uses less power than 'OFF', but then you have to remember to turn it on before you do print jobs. And if it's wireless, it has to do the 'handshake' with the router and your computer after the power is restored.

I'd leave it on unless you were going to be away for a while.

When my Canon laser printer powers down to standby, only one dim LED glows.
I don't see the harm in leaving it on like that, along with several other electronics.

FWIW, I leave my desktop PC and all printers on all the time - except when traveling. If leaving for more than a day or two, I shut down the printers. PC stays on as I use remote access while away - but the monitors do get turned off.

We used to always shut ours off to save on the electricity bill, but then we read that the machine uses more ink if you do that. Considering the cost of the cartridge, we now keep it on. Not sure if that is saving ink or not- can;t tell yet, but just put a new black ink cartridge in so we will see.

This is only true (sometimes) for inkjet printers. The OP is asking about a laser printer so this does not apply.

I had about this as well. We have a HP Deskjet. Does it use ink each time you start it? Thanks

We have a HP wireless P1102w LaserJet printer. We leave it on all the time. There are settings where you can set it to automatically turn off after a set period of time or never. You can also change settings so it goes to sleep after a set period of time. Then when you go to print it wakes up and prints then goes back to sleep again.

We have it set to never turn off but go to sleep after one hour. This seems to work pretty well. Though we have had problems getting it to wake back up since I did the last firmware update.

I found a manual for my new printer on the Internet (amazing that none came with it and the box appeared to be factory sealed). It says the factory default setting is for the printer to go into "sleep" mode 60 seconds after last use. It also says that it will not go into "sleep" mode if one of the covers is open. There are instructions (that I don't understand) telling how to change the factory setting if one wants to. My conclusion, for better or worse, is that unless I will be gone for an extended time, I will close the covers and leave it on.
