It all started when I went to Hawaii. This camera was ubiquitous. Every where I went I spotted people holding this camera. Especially among the surfing set. They even sold the camera at the exchange store in the Hale Koa in Waikiki. Then I saw them in Kauai, at Poipu beach. There was this guy who had a quad copter RC drone. What was the drone carrying? This little GoPro camera.

So for an early Fathers day present I am getting the GoPro Hero 3+.

YES!

Take a look at this YouTube to see some of the uses for the this camera.

Disclaimer: I am not going to take up surfing or mountain biking. I will find some safer uses for this camera. Snorkeling is more my speed.

We just bought one. We plan to use it for snorkeling when we go to Curacao and Cancun in May and again on our B2B cruise this fall. We snorkel a lot. Of course the $399 Hero 3+ quickly goes up in price when you add on the GoPole Reach extra battery, anti-fog inserts and filters. It seems just the camera isn't enough...

Got one for DH's birthday in February, based on a thread in the HI forum many months back. I figured he could use it for his fly fishing, fly tying, white water rafting, guitar/banjo playing, and of course we'd take it along for snorkeling or diving.
So far, though, he hasn't it as much as I expected. Just too much going on lately to play with it.

You can get the Hero 3+ at Costco wareshouse or online for $329 free shipping.

I plan to get my accessories on ebay or amazon for a great discount!

Too late for that. Already bought and paid for from B&H several weeks ago. We did get a free 32GB Sandisk Extreme micro SD card with it, so that is worth about $35-$40.

I used EBay and Amazon for all of the accessories too.

I went cheap and bought a Contour Roam for $100 at Amazon. It came with a waterproof case and micro SD card. Someday I'll upgrade to the GoPro.

What accessories did you end up getting? I plan on getting the chest mount, head mount, and a pole. Also need a tripod mount.

We plan to use it primarily for snorkeling. So we got the GoPole Reach. It looks like it will work well and will extend to 40". DH does most of the photos and filming and doesn't dive while snorkeling (neither do I). So the extra reach will be good. We passed on a floating pole as the Reach has a wrist loop.

I got some Anti Fog inserts on EBay as I read this can be a problem when using it in water. Also picked up an extra battery from Amazon.

Three filters (red, yellow and orange) from EBay. I read that we probably didn't need them, but figured for $18 we could try each out to see if we get better color as we have been disappointed somewhat with the color on our Olympus camera. Will also test it out with no filter.

You got me thinking about the battery?

While they improved the battery in the Hero 3+, it still doesn't have a very long battery life. So we opted to always have a spare. We paid $19 for the extra one through Amazon.

How much time does the 32gb microSD card give you? I already picked up a 32gb MicroSD card Class 10 at the Micro Center store that just opened up here in Queens.

Here is information from the GoPro website. It varies based on recording mode. The times shown are based on a 64GB card, cut it in half for a 32GB. We also have a 64GB Sandisk Ultra card that we bought last year on black Friday in anticipation of buying the GoPro this year. Will probably try to pick up some more Extreme cards this year. Not all Class 10 cards are the same.

I did some quick research about the Class 10 cards looking for any issues regarding what you mentioned about "Not all Class 10 cards are the same".
Did not find any smoking guns about differences in Class 10 cards? Do you prefer getting the SanDisk brand?

Yes. That is what I was referring to. It comes down to the write speed of the micro SD chip. If you are wanting to use some of the higher video modes, having a 30MBS transfer speed may not cut it. The Sandisk Extreme will write up to 45MBS where the Ultra is 30MBS. So there may be some video degradation issues if I try to record in 4K or 2.7K modes or in Protune using our 64GB chip.

The 32GB chip we got came with the camera as part of a promotion from B&H. It also happened to be one of the recommended cards on that GoPro page you linked to.

filters are only handy if you are diving deep...

most folks dont know that you cant see RED in deep water...it shows up as blueish green...which is super weird when its coming out of your finger after poking it on a fish =)

Intova makes a nice camera for a lot less, I paid $149, it takes 2.5 hrs 1080hd with the LCD on, or 3 hrs off.

I saw one mounted to the hood of a car at the Pololu Valley Lookout at the end of highway 270, passed Hawi on the Big Island today. The drive was beautiful with a fun winding road with multiple one car bridges and dense vegetation everywhere. That would be a great video to have!!!

We just broke down and bought one on our trip to Arizona - as we came up with so many good uses for it (Segway tour, Jeep tour, horseback riding), and we are divers/snorkelers and have been through many "waterproof" cameras that even with good care, leaked.

We bought it at Best Buy, but found a lot of accessories for it at Target, Walmart, and REI. We also noticed Costco had a good price, but it was a different model (earlier model than what we got).

One attachment that we found to be very useful was an LCD screen that attaches to the camera - within the waterproof case. We could actually see what we were taking photos of - and we could review the footage - both video and still without the use of a computer.

I received the unit from Costco Online yesterday. Did not realize the unit they were selling was the GoPro 3 Hero Black. I now want to get the 3+ Black. Did not open the package so I will return and spend the extra $70 for the 3+.

I have a Sony DSLR and I noticed a huge difference when I used a SanDIsk Extreme card, for the first time this year. The specific one I'm referring to is 60 MB/s and 32GB. I just ordered a new Extreme card for our upcoming trip, but it's only 50MB/s so we'll see if I notice any difference in speed, but it was 1/2 the price.

Check out the different cards on Amazon.

Has anybody used and compared the GO video camera to the Sony Action Camera HDR-AS30V, or the older HDR-AS15 and/or HDR-AS10. I almost purchased the HDR-AS30V, which I may still do latter this year for Hawaii, but instead picked up a Sony DSC-HX50V/B 20.4MP Digital camera for Europe.

Seems to have good/comparable reviews.
