Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort- all pool chairs taken but nobody there

Nothing like watching the chair warfare with 50 of your closest friends 'tailgate style' on a rented Tommy Bahama chair under a flimsy rental umbrella, looking over the guy in front of you who has brought down his patio furniture. Good times. Watch out... Lawnmower coming through...

We just visited WSJ last week. Pool was packed by lunch with no free chairs thanks to Spring Break. If you made it down by 10 or 11ish you were usually good to find 4 togther. However, people were also saving a lot chairs early in the morning becuase of this. It annoyed us at first becuase clearly most people never came down until lunch or after, but we actually saw someone from the resort walking around removing towels from chairs!

I read that WSJ expanded the pool area during the refurbish - I guess it wasn't enough. How did it look otherwise?

As to WKORV - since we have OFD (corners) and are above the prime lounging areas - I always get a good laugh or two while watching the chair hogs in the early AM claiming space. Even off-season has this - I can't imagine what it is like during high-season.

I have little to go off of since it was our first visit to WSJ. But the pool did not seem any different from the pictures I've seen in the past. However, even with all the chairs taken and a million kids around for spring break, the pool was so big that it never felt very crowded. So maybe it was bigger?

My wife and I did discuss how it might get a little crazy and overcrowded once they finish refurbishing the new buildings. The buildings are currently completely gutted, so more quests will be at the resort in the future. But I think you need to set your expectations appropriately when you go on vacation over Spring Break. Lots of kids = lots of loud people at the pool (including my own 2 kids).

The gutted buildings were a bit of an eye sore. They did keep the noise from 9 - 5 which was nice and it wasn't all that hard to ignore the work. It was less impactful as it could have been. But why do they put up ugly chain link fences in one section and bright orange temporary fencing in another? I had a nice view of an orange plastic fence from our balcony. If you looked past the work, the resort and pool area looked great. I absolutely loved it there and hope to be able to go back soon.

Whenever we come across the chair hogging, I will give people an hour to show up. After an hour, I start removing the towels.

Yes.....I am that guy.....which is better then that other guy.

If I ever meet you, I will buy you a beer!!!

Do I even say "Pool Hero" ???? :D

Update: our week is almost over and I have to say the chair situation ended up being much better than my original impression from our balcony. Chairs were available throughout the day and empty chairs that were being held did get tagged. The only thing is the early morning chair saving crew that puts towels out before the resort staff shows up. But once the day got started we had no trouble. :)

Another fun and relaxing week here. Can't wait to come back next year!

I am happy that the resort is now tagging empty chairs .

Hi Glenn,

Glad to hear that you could find chairs during the day!

Maybe our paths will cross next year as we lounge by the pool in our chairs .
