My wife and I are finishing up our first stay here at Beachplace, we have been Legacy Marriott owners since 1999. We had 10 day Princess Cruise in the Caribbean shortly after the New Year and figured a week here afterwards would be a good use of the travel cost to get here.
Anyway, some impressions for those who have not been here:
1. Weather-Surprisingly cool, but then the whole US is this week, usually at least 15 degrees warmer according to locals so certainly not a rating issue
2. I am sitting in our 19th (top) floor unit typing this and listening to the noisiest air handler (for heat) I have ever heard in a timeshare or hotel. When we first heard it I seriously thought an old Chalks seaplane had fired up on the beach outside the hotel. Seems like serious undersizing of air vents/air velocity problem, just a roar. I do not know if other floors are affected or only higher floors.
3. View on 19th though is great, almost makes up for the noise. Only negatives are daily there are a number of tramp steamships/freighters anchored off the beach apparently awaiting permission to go into the harbor. This detracts from the nice siting of the TS.
3. Pool, hot tub, exercise room all normal Marriott good quality.
4. Security-as noted in other posts there have been "urban" issues at this location that obviously are a concern when you go down to the mall area (non Marriott) with corridors that appear strikingly marginal for nighttime use. My wife (the final judge for us) with no comments from me felt uncomfortable the several daylight trips to eat and shop during the day, I would not be comfortable going out at night on foot unless walking in a big group-best to have car access.
On checking in had to give busboys my drivers license to borrow luggage buggy from lobby to unload, seemed odd since I had to clear Marriott security to even get to the lobby. Never had that asked before in any Marriott TS or Hotel in 30 years of travelling America for work.
5. Parking. Apparently Marriott owns 4th and 5th floor parking garage levels and mall owns lower floors. This results in a rather convoluted parking procedure that after a few tries you get used to, but at least is an attempt to deal with the possible security issues in the Parking area.
And of course there is the nearly unique for Marriott $14/day parking lot charge to stay here, which as other posts note, simply stinks.
6. 2Br unit was typical Marriott TS layout, looks like recently freshened up and was normal good Marriott quality with no negative issues (other than the extreme air noise noted above).
7. Overall, subjectively I would compared to other Marriott TS rate this perhaps a 6 or 7 on a scale of 10. I can understand how other TS owners more used to "Urban" environments might rate this higher, but I would not.
Comparing the overall area layout here to Ko Olina, Summittwatch, Legends Edge, or the many other Marriott TS we have been at leaves us wondering what happened here with the original Marriott design when this and the Mall was constructed, as usually Marriott is the boss of all development work, and perhaps it is time Marriott took a break from their ROFR TS money making activities to study what might bring this overall site (including the Mall area) up to historic Marriott TS standards.

I was at Beachplace when a hurricane was approaching several years ago. I thought their management was CRAP and full of it. Every evening after 6PM a notice was slipped under our door, which basicly said, you MAY need to evacuate the building (but worded to the barrier island would be closed and the Marriot staff would leave - never said "we are throw you to the curb"). Of course, NO ONE at the front desk on any of the 3 nights these increasingly alarming letters were stuck under my door AFTER 6PM knew anything and no answer was provided nor did I receive any call back from the resort management. I was travelling alone and did NOT have a car.

Great waves. Lots of wind. I booked a flight back home.

Guess that could explain their view of the shopping mall - they just go home as it is not where their family sleeps and eats.

We were happy last year at BeachPlace Towers

We stayed last year for the first time at Beach Place Towers. We enjoyed it so much that we are returning on February 9th for a two week stay. We found the staff helpful. Because it is smaller than many Marriott resorts, we met several couples at the wine and cheese party that come back every year for several months. Sorry to hear you were not pleased but we had a grand time, we did choose the innercoastal water view rather than the ocean. Liked it so much, that it is our request for this February. :p

Thanks for your candid review of this resort.

We also find it unusal to have to leave your license for the luggage cart but it's a minor inconvenience--I think it's mostly to make sure they come back to the desk and not get left somewhere, making it harder for other guests to check-in. We have had problems at other resorts finding a buggy!!! Never had a problem here.

We also like the intracoastal view much better--we have found it can be windy on the ocean side and we really enjoy breakfast on the verandah.

Your final comparison is interesting in that you liked Legends Edge and SummitWatch better. We have been to over 20 Marriotts and those two were our least favorites. And to be perfectly honest, I can't think of one stay where I haven't complained about something to my DH!!! So I consider myself a fair judge!!! No place is perfect!!! Yes, that includes all of the MVCI Hawaii resorts that we have stayed at!! (e.g, we own at Waiohai and would never get a parking lot view room, but we always comment on how bad planning that was because someone is getting it...)

And yet, even when we feel the resort is not top notch, we still have had wonderful vacations.

In the end it's what you like that matters and will predict your future travels. To each his own. :) Isn't it great that MVCI offers us all so many options!!!

I've never missed a year at BeachPlace since I bought 2 weeks when it first opened...I split them into 4 parts and spend 4 weeks in a row there from President's Day. I hardly ever use a car there as everything is so close by. Compared to other Marriott resorts 'on the beach' in Florida I find it really nice to have a million dollar view with upscale restaurants all up the street. I have never felt unsafe in the Beach Place mall, even at night when we go down for an ice cream and people watch. Unlike other Marriott TS on the beach, there are only two views at BP...ocean view or waterway view. My pref. is oceanview where I can read the paper with my OJ and coffee on the balcony as the sun comes up. I've been going to Fort Lauderdale for about 30 years at this time of year...first at Coconut Bay where I owned weeks 7&8 but when BeachPlace Towers came up I grabbed it and sold the other TS. Never regretted it except for the way they let the décor go down...but now anxious to see the new design in just a few weeks!

I was just there for a long "girls" weekend in January. The parking was annoying, but not horrible. We were on the 18th floor, ocean view, and LOVED watching the sun come up each day! We had fun checking out the ships as they changed each day/night. We walked several places day & night and never felt unsafe. The walkway from the mall back to the elevator is a little shadowy, so I could see how that would be a concern for some. We own at Ocean Watch in Myrtle Beach. Beach Place is not the same experience, mostly because it is situated in an urban setting. We were not expecting it to be the same experience. We enjoyed BP! It was a great location for getting to most places in the area. On Friday & Saturday night, I was glad we were on the 18th floor. The noise from the bars still made it up that high, so I would anticipate it being more of an issue on a lower floor.

One note...the CVS in the mall does NOT have a pharmacy, so if you need any over the counter meds that are behind the pharmacy counter, stop at one of the other drugstores while you are out.

... Comparing the overall area layout here to Ko Olina, Summittwatch, Legends Edge, or the many other Marriott TS ...

This is probably why you aren't happy. Apples and oranges.

Unfortunately you are correct about the BeachPlace complex as it exists currently. It has been documented that the BeachPlace development has morphed over the years into a less than desirable complex if you are expecting a family oriented setting like most Marriott resorts.

As far as parking, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't guests at the other urban resort, Custom House, have to pay a much higher parking fee than those at BeachPlace. I do not believe owner's at BeachPlace are willing to increase their annual dues to cover these fees.

If you don't want to pay for parking, just take your II deposit and come visit one of my favorite resorts - Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort - just 1 mile north on A1A. Still in Ft Lauderdale with MANY walk to dining establishments and family activities (stop #2 on the Water Taxi, next to the Bonnet House, shopping at the Galleria Mall with Dillards, etc).

This is a semi-tongue and cheek post - I have stayed 3 or more times at BP. But I really prefer the locale and businesses by FLBR. The VRI resort does NOT have the puffy beds or the fancy lobby - but it is very clean, spacious (just don't book the STUDIO if you are thinking it is like BP). There are some 1bedroom units with 1.5 baths and all 1bdr & 2bdr have both a sofabed & Murphy bed in the Living Rooms. Plus, the resort has saunas and its next door neighbor, does "wash & fold" by the pound (a TRUE vacation for at least one member of your household).

Years ago my family stayed at Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort when it was called The Breakers (does that date me?) and later I heard they were forced to change their name or go to court with the famous Breakers in Palm Beach. I wasn't a TS owner in those days so we rented a 1 bdrm and a studio right across the hall...my 2 older kids stayed in it and faced the waterway while the rest of us stayed in the 1 bdrm (with Murphy bed) and faced to ocean (although very hard to see). It wasn't first class or on the beach, but OK. But we did not feel safe in the area at all...just up the street towards the beach were pretty seedy bars, restaurants, motorcycle gangs, etc. With our kids there I was very cautious if we went out for dinner, but nothing ever happened.

A winter escape from Toronto around President's Day for 2 weeks is a real treat...winter seems shorter that way, and timeshares were more affordable than hotels on a limited budget. We ended up buying 2 weeks in Coconut Bay right across the street (west) from Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. It was a main floor 1 bdrm suite, facing a 7/11 on one side and a canal on the other where you could fish for dinner...parking was free. It also wasn't first class but I enjoyed it for several years...until I went to see the newly opened Marriott BeachPlace Towers...and bought 2 developer weeks so I could eventually split and stay 4 weeks if I wanted. The first year I stayed one week in BeachPlace and Coconut Bay the second. There was such a difference, I never stayed in Coconut Bay again...I felt unsafe in it as there was no management there at night, bugs in the room and pool.

The beachfront location of BeachPlace is a treat...a million dollar view I call it...and enjoy the sounds of people having fun. We didn't even need a car as the MBP shopping complex had some pretty nice eateries back then. That's changed...but we now just walk next door to the Ritz for dinner one night, then another 5 minutes to the Hilton for another dinner, the Westin next night, then the W the Atlantic the next. Lovely...upscale...and felt safe night and day...even today.

It was a good deal, even at developer prices giving us almost a million points for those 2 weeks...which piled on and on and used for many business class flights to Europe and fancy hotels that still seem 'free' to me...a whole new world. This year alone I'll be in London twice, Paris once, Cannes, Monaco, Milan, and Rome...all in Marriott's on points and business class flights.

Most Marriott timeshares don't come close to giving me the pleasures of BeachPlace...I like active areas with walkable sights and upscale eateries without having to drive. I haven't found any other TS other than Custom House that offers that to us. Everyone is different in what they want from a holiday, but we're getting ready again to go for 4 weeks and enjoy leaving the ice and below temps of Toronto. Enjoy what you have...live for today.

Sorry for the long story. I got carried away. :)
Brian

It is weird, why you need to leave your DL for a cart?
I stayed there a month ago and no one asked me about DL.
There was no luggage cart available at the lobby and they brought one when i asked for it. Didn't have to give my DL.
I loved BPT, it is close to beach, shopping, restaurants and my 10th floor oceanview was nice.
I didn't hear any noise from my room.
I would rate 9 out of 10 comparing to other marriott resorts.

Some times we do, some times we don't. It may be on the busy check-in day/times that they require it. I think it's mostly to make sure the carts come back to the desk and not get left somewhere, making it harder for other guests to check-in. We have had problems at other resorts finding a cart!!! Never had a problem here.
