Do I give out my reservation number?

Hello all. I'm in the process of offering my timeshare for rental (first time I'm doing this). I developed a rental agreement (thanks to advice from the TUG boards!). Would I give the "new renter" my same Marriott's reservation number or does Marriott provide a new reservation number once I call them to have it changed to the Renter's name?

It seems as though if the reservation number NEVER changes, then I may be liable for anything "shady" the renter might do....as in re-renting or whatever.

Thoughts???:ponder:

I believe that the reservation number stays the same. I think you only add the persons (renter's)name to the reservation and your name stays attached.

The reservation number does not change - but even if it did, Marriott knows it's your ownership, regardless of what guest you put on the confirmation. You are still the owner of the reservation.

The renter cannot re-rent the timeshare - Marriott will not permit guests to make any changes in the reservation - only you, the owner, can do that.

In your rental terms you should specify that the unit cannot be transferred to anyone else, and that only the person named on the confirmation may check-in.

Correct. Once you call Marriott and ADD the renter's name to your reservation, the renter will be able to type in his/her last name and reservation number on this page to confirm you have done so. This will assure them that there is a place waiting for them.

You are correct

My understanding is that with the reservation number, a non-owner can go through the portal and cancel the reservation.

I do give out reservation numbers to renters because that is the normal course of business to verify the reservation; however, the OP should be warned that this is possible.

This should not happen in 99%+ of rentals, but it can happen unless Marriott has plugged up this "flaw" in the system.

Don't they have to log-in with the owner's password to make the cancellation?

Change or Cancel Reservations

It’s easy to view, modify or cancel a reservation online.

Sign into your online account to view a list of all of your current reservations.

Or to find a specific reservation, including those made by phone or when not signed in, please provide the confirmation number issued by Marriott and the guest's last name.

Once reservations are displayed, you may change or cancel them using the links provided.

Note that I have not verified this myself. I thought I read it on this board, but I may have read it somewhere else -- someone had reported having their reservation cancelled when an email was sent to an incorrect user.

Last year when I stayed at MOC, I could look up my reservation without entering my credentials for the portal. I'm looking for that link now and can't find it.

Correct that -- here is the link:
https://www.marriottvacationclub.com/reservations/modify.shtml

I don't have a reservation to check right now, but I think it allows you to cancel via the link.

Now that is just dumb!

I know ... and yet still light years ahead of our pals at Starwood :wall:

Well - usually I would agree - but they launched online booking today! ;)

I didn't know. Thanks for the tip...please substitute "decade" in place of "light years" in my prior post

This is again an issue. This was an issue years ago where you could cancel a reservation with just the confirmation number and last name without being signed in. Marriott fixed this again, but now after the many site updates it looks like an issue again. I was able to book a reservation on Marriott.com, log out and then look-up the reservation by name and confirmation number only. It permitted me to cancel the reservation. I don't know if it would allow the same thing with a MVCI reservation.

One thing is that you should get an instant e-mail when/if the confirmation is cancelled since your e-mail is still on the reservation.

I do recall reading on here a few months back where someone had a renter and the renter was able to call Owner Services and have them change the reservation to a checkin day a day earlier. Think about it, your renter has just about every piece of information about you to call Owner Services and be you.

Due to this flaw, I don't provide the reservation number until full payment has been made. In the meantime, they can call Owner Services and confirm the reservation, view we own, that their name has been added and anything else they need to feel comfortable. In fact, I encourage new renters to call and confirm ownership and view type before they sign on the dotted line.
