In flight wifi

I'm currently on a Delta flight from Atlanta to Denver and using the on board wifi. When I brought up the system it said it was verifying I had a system with a valid operating system or something like that. I'm using a Samsung Chromebook which it seemed to be happy with.

It then said I had 12 flight passes ready to use. I clicked on the button to use one, entered a captcha verification code and was connected. I entered no personal information, no credit card information.

We don't fly that often so I don't know if this is something that is widely available. I suspect that if I stay online very long it will want me to pay for the service. It that happens I will be logging out, there isn't anything I need to do on the internet that wouldn't wait until we are home in a few hours.

A lot of airlines have wifi for a fee. But, they're finding that FREE wifi will put people on the jets, so they may start doing it for no cost. Likewise, JetBlue has free satellite tv and radio. It's not only the cost of the airline, it's what people get for free that will put them in the seats.

Last time I was on DL, free wifi was limited to the Delta site.

If they now offer totally free services, I may reconsider my plan to switch to AA. ;)

Cheers

My last DL haul had free wi-fi to the Delta or eBay sites. eBay. Go figure? Free in flight wi-fi has only novelty value to me. I wouldn't choose an airline one way or another, but for those road warriors who try to make their work week productive on planes it might.

When I travel for work, and especially during the week, wifi on a flight can make everything a bit better if only because I can respond to emails timely. It's handy, much more than a novelty, and I've been using it for years since they started it. It's especially valuable on those cross country flights that take the entire work day.

I can't imagine airlines ever giving wifi away for free, at least not for the foreseeable future, given the costs.
