Can you change from a night owl to a day person?

I am a night owl, always have been and think always will be, already did the children routine one of whom was an early riser..sigh, worked many different hours but yet I always revert back to my night owl status...so I think not...I hate mornings, always have...good luck..:ignore:

With you, Pam. I value my "me" time when everyone else is asleep and nobody is asking me to do anything, and snuggling into my warm comfy bed and not having to get up is an indulgence I love.

Another night owl here :D

I have been every type in my adulthood, usually having to do with my job.

One can definitely change, I have, plenty.

Now I am a normal business hours person, but I don't get up like most daytimers, I sleep past 8 sometimes, never set my clock for 6 am, but maybe 7:30. For many years now, my work start time has been, eh, 9, 9:30, certainly by 10 am, and it is always fine with my cohorts.

It has to be, because I am often the one working from midnight to 3 am, which works for our company better than my doing the same thing during business hours.

As a young person, I was always a night owl who could easily sleep til noon. (And had a really hard time with 8 a.m. classes.) Then I spent lots of years in a high stress job and raising kids, where I pushed through on 5-6 hours of sleep, staying up late to get stuff done and because I couldn't wind down to sleep. It was "normal" to me, and I didn't realize how much adrenalin my body was producing.

But I've changed as a result of aging, I think, and not because I've really tried. First, I became more sensitive to caffeine. So if I've been getting up at a certain time for work and having my morning coffee and then try to sleep late some morning, I get a caffeine withdrawal headache that pushes me out of bed. And that means I'm tired in the evening and end up going to bed earlier.

Also, I found when I retired from my high stress job and moved to a fun part time one, my whole metabolism changed, likely because of having the adrenalin in my system drop. I'm tired earlier now, and wake up after I've slept 7-8 hours. I have come to love having a leisurely start to my day.

Of course, my night owl husband still enjoys staying up late to watch TV and read. But since he naps during evening TV shows, even he is out of bed by 9 a.m.. So I think there are people who will always be night owls...he's one of 5 brothers who all stay up late.

Another just like you Pat. I detest getting up while it is still dark out. I could easily stay up til 1 and get out of bed at 9. I would like to make it earlier, especially when I am fully retired, living the good life in FL, and want to make the most of my day when its cooler.

The past few years, I drove DH to work in the mornings, having to arise at the awful hour of 5:20 and not getting back until 8:20 am. Most nights then, I was asleep by 10:30. But as soon as that ended, back to the old ways. I would like to fall asleep by 11:30, up at 7 or 7:30, and no napping during the day. That sounds about right.

Getting up at 9:00 AM is not what I call night owl time. I don't get up until 11:00 at the earliest unless I have to be somewhere. To me getting up at 9:00 everyday would make me a day person! :)

Another night owl here and many times an early riser too. I get by with very little sleep but when I am sleepy, I don't fight it as I will take a nap. 4:30 PM seems to be the time when I am most sleepy. Only half an hour will do it and I am like new again. :)

Yes, since I've retired it has gotten worse. I go to bed later and sleep later.

LOL, me 3 :)

Is there a specific reason you want to be up earlier? If so, set the alarm and plan something, even if it's just coffee with a friend, webchat at a specific time or whatever else may work for you.

We got a puppy several months ago and he often wakes me around 9:30 -- so I let him out but often go back to bed ;)

If there's no dire reason to change your sleeping habits, why bother? Just go with your internal clock and do what feels good for you. I only miss the extra sunshine, but otherwise a true night owl here.

I've heard that your circadian rhythms or biorhythms or internal clock or whatever you call it, gets established depending on time of day or night you were born. It doesn't always hold up, but seems to more often than not with folks I've polled.

I was born at 10:30 at night, and my mind really gets going about then. I've been a night owl since I was a baby. Also my natural clock seems to be about a 26-hour cycle, so bedtime can get later and later. As I've aged, I have more trouble staying asleep though.

I never heard that before. I was born at 11:57 PM so maybe there is something to it.

You'll all get a kick out of this. I had Chinese food on Wednesday with some friends. My cookie had this fortune "Anybody who goes to bed the same day they got up is a quitter". Maybe I should just forget about trying to change.

Pat - you managed to work full time for many years - and I assume you had to be @ your desk early AM - at latest by 9?
Always wondered how you did that with your late night hours~!

(I've always been early (6AM) and don;t regret it for a minute - love having full DAYS)

I don't know how I did it either. At one point I had to leave the house at 7:30 AM. I only stayed up until midnight then. With 3 kids in school and sports and being a single mom, I think I was living on adrenaline all those years. The last several years of work, it was only 15 mins to work and I had a pager/cellphone and could access the company computer from home. Very seldom rolled into the office before 10:00. At one time I could have actually had my office in my home but I knew that would never work for me. I would be way too distracted and probably wouldn't even get dressed!
