New York City Marathon Cancelled

I think NYC and NYCM should be held liable for their poor judgement.

Nothing said here is going to change your opinion. The reality is that if you booked non refundable airfare and hotels, and didn't insure them, you're out. No amount of whining on a timeshare interest website is going to get you a refund. Sorry. Get over it.

Could say more. Won't.

Jim

Wow, really?! There are not many sympathetic ears on this board who are swayed by your position. Good luck finding a court willing to hear the case or a judge or jury willing to make NYC or NYCM pay.

Would you still want to run if there were trees, mud, sand, garbage on the route? No volunteers to hand out water and bananas? Come on.

Just run it on your own and clock it. We'll believe your time.

IMHO the only poor judgement is that of those choosing to continue with their travel plans to NYC despite advance warnings about Sandy and information post-Sandy about the degree of impact and devastation on the affected area unless of course if they were coming to volunteer their time and expertise.

In keeping with the adage, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade:"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hundreds of runners in New York City are refusing to let a canceled marathon spoil their Sunday plans and are channeling months of preparation into informal runs to benefit victims of Sandy. The event was expected to draw more than 40,000 runners - including Kelly Rooney.

Rooney was at first irked that Bloomberg called off the marathon after insisting earlier in the week that it would go ahead. Rooney traveled with her husband and daughter, while her parents flew in from Mexico. By Saturday afternoon, Rooney was over her disappointment and looking forward to a charity run on Staten Island that she had found advertised on the Internet.

On Sunday, Rooney will be running with a backpack full of dog food, cat food, batteries and some water donated by her hotel, the Ritz-Carlton. "I truthfully at this point don't care if I run, I just want to give this stuff out," she said.

The idea for the Staten Island run came to Jordan Metzl, a doctor of sports medicine, just as the debate was heating up last week. He was discouraged that the running community was being perceived so negatively when it holds so many races to raise money for a variety of causes. Metzl is expecting more than 500 runners to show up on Sunday. The runners will take different routes across Staten Island and distribute supplies along the way.

I do think a boycott of future years would be a appropriate [comment deleted].
PLEASE don't come back again! As a life long New Yorker, we don't want some like you back here. People have lost love ones, their homes are flooded. Family's have been broken up. I'm very sorry you have been inconvenienced but I have spent the last four days in Staten Island, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Breezy Point, Rockaway and Far Rockaway. I have no sympathy for you. If you come, enjoy your time in NYC and spend lots of money.

Even after the mayor and head of the NYCM repeatedly said the event would go forward????

Should registrations fees be refunded and everyone allowed to run in 2013 if they want, bypassing the lottery?

You obviously do not understand how travel insurance works. What was said a week (or just days) before a scheduled event would have no bearing on the travel insurance coverage.

You obviously have other issues with NYC and their mayor. I'm shocked you're even allowed to still post here on TUG.

Outstanding! Now that is the right attitude to have. Best wishes to Rooney and all the runners who will still be making the trip and making the best of it.

OK who is Kelly Rooney?

I actually do. People changed flights and travelled to NYC. They could have cancelled their flights and hotels. With or without travel insurance. Maybe cancelled their time off work.

The decision should have been made sooner. It should not have been up for debate.

A $260 entry fee is a lot of money not to get refunded.

Not sure why runners from out of town would want to volunteer their time when citizens of NYC threatened to spit and trip runners.

I never planned to run New York this year but do not like how it has been handled. A lot of people will stop running NYRR events.

I have no other issue with the mayor or the city.

Go for a nice walk, if that's possible where you live - some areas of the country it's still not at this point. Presumably you have a home to go to and a bed to sleep in tonight.

I really do hope you can just relax.

If not, PM me your address and I'll send you some cheese. Might go well.

My pastor's wife trained with her heart and soul for this race. They arrived in NY and it was cancelled. Of course this is exactly what she and her family are doing - with huge smiles on their faces!:cheer:

See post #30 above.

I saw that much, but thought she was a celebrity of some sorts that I'd never heard of. Now she is a celebrity of good will.

The original article described her as "a 31 year old, stay at home mom,"
which I deleted as irrelevant to the discussion. Sorry for any confusion.

Interesting that I did NOT see or hear any reference to runners being spit upon or tripped! Good for the people that are already in NYC and running to help out Staten Island, etc. In a disaster like this I cannot believe that a poster would be so mean spirited as to want to boycott and sue!

I think we are done here.

Folks - please think twice before you start political threads.
