I am in the process of watching the dvr this morning. Wow! Hampton Williams from the Dallas group was amazing! I don't know if his style will translate into the other dance genres but, like Nigel, I don't care! I predict that even if he is unable to make it very far he will be brought back to perform that dance in the season finale. He deserves an Emmy for that. So much emotion. So well danced. So original. Loved it!

Rose, SYTYCD is THE favorite show at our house. I just enjoyed last night's episode with my daughter. Each year we think it can't get better, but it just does. Every time.

WOW!

Every time the new season starts, I fall in love with the show all over again. Yes, Hampton was amazing. Amelia (the 20's flapper) danced well, and had huge amounts of personality. Bree (the mother of two) was just beautiful. The two male ballet dancers they showcased were both great, and so was one of the street dancers (Shakeen, maybe?). We recorded it on the DVR because my wife was out yesterday evening and had to miss the first half. I'm going to sit down with her tonight and watch it again. :)

Aside from dance, I thought the way they treated the autistic young man was wonderful. I also loved the moment when one of the girls fell down coming through the door, and Cat cracked up. :)

Thanks for starting this thread - I wait every year for the show to start so anxiously. I sure did get exorcised too!

I used to watch it with my DD, too. But she grew up and moved away. I miss her commentary. She was able to see the technique better than I due to her love of dance and many lessons and dance groups.

Agree with your assessments. Nigel was very kind to the autistic man who just wanted to dance. I was afraid it was going to be another cringe-worthy moment but it was handled very well by all the judges.

Loved Bree and her two children. Loved that Nigel invited the kids to dance, too. That was sweet.

I don't know anything about about dance. I do know that I enjoy this show cuz these folks just amaze me with their abilities.

I was first introduced to dance and dancers when the Joffery Ballet summered(?) at my university. Spent many hours socializing with the dancers. This was when I recognized what incredible athletes dancers truly are.

I enjoyed last night's show--the LA auditions. They had a lot of talent in both the women and the men. I enjoyed martial arts guy and the circus wheel guy. Even though circus guy dropped out of choreography, I wouldn't be surprised if they brought him back as a guest artist or if Cirque du Soleil hires him. His performance was beautiful.

As for the girl whose mother kicked her out of the house, I wonder what the other side of the story is. I know they are looking for the human story to help boost interest but this story feels incomplete and uncomfortable to me. The mother is being vilified without a chance to explain herself.

The Atlanta and SLC auditions are yet to be aired and there has been so much excellent talent already. How many people do they advance to Vegas? Is there a quota or a limit? It must be so difficult for these judges to narrow down the field.

Fantastic audition round. The production was excellent. Not many freaks. Mostly just good to great dancing and some great entertainment. The Ninja twins were fun to watch.

I loved the martial arts guy whose name is Cole Horibe. He's from Hawaii and danced in the same dance center as Mark Kanemura (24-7 Danceforce). He was unbelievable last night. I can't wait to see what else he can do. He should be an exciting dancer.

I also liked the pole dancer from cirque du soleil. Her name is Eliana Girard and she danced a ballet piece. Ballet + Cirque du soleil = great entertainment. She may be this year's Melanie Moore. It depends on how she does in the other styles.

Love, love, love this show. My dd and I watched it together last night. We loved the Ninja Twins and wondered why they were allowed to audition when it was already known they were too old to compete? It just seems cruel.

They didn't seem at all upset. My guess is that someone told them up front, "You're too old for the show, but you're entertaining, so we'd like you to go in front of the judges anyway."

I think the producers are proactively going after better entertainment in the audition rounds than in past years. It makes the early shows much more interesting. I don't need to see that character "sex" or whatever his name is ever again. Having that replaced by the Ninja twins was outstanding.

Loved last night's Atlanta auditions. Wow, wow, wow. How will we ever pick just one? The trio from Dragon House were so controlled.

Loved Grandma and her interaction with Nigel. "Are you sure you don't want to change your mind so you don't look ridiculous?" (or something like that)

Restarting the thread:

It feels good to see things getting started for real. Here's some way-too-early, top-of-the-head handicapping:

Nigel said they wanted star quality, and I see a fair amount of it. Cole, Eliana, George, Janelle (maybe - I'm sorry we didn't see her dance in the last show), and Witney all have both personality and skill.

Both Amelia and Cyrus have great personalities, but might come up short technically. We'll see. (That's not necessarily a killer issue - I admit I was a big fan of Evan in season 5.)

Alexa and Chehon have tremendous technique, but need to consistently show more acting ability.

I haven't seen enough of any of the others to form clear impressions.

Who are your favorites?

Who are your favorites?

Right now Eliana, Cole and the ballet dancer whose name I can't remember. We'll see as the season progresses.

I'm interested to know how the eliminations are going to work this time around since the show is only one night per week instead of two. Will they do the eliminations, based on the judges only, at the end of the night? Or will we have to wait until the next week to see who leaves?

Voting Processes

I think they will dance, and then the public will vote as normal. Instead of doing the results the next night, at the beginning of next weeks show the will announce the results and then go right into dancing again.

The only thing I see wrong with that is how do they practice for the next week? Do they tell the person who is voted off and they have to keep it a secret? Not really fair to the partners of the people being voted off.

I agree. I think this will hurt those whose partners get voted off. I also think it will make the show as a whole less interesting. I've heard rumors that the show won't make it another year...We have a dancer at our studio who auditioned and made it to Vegas before being let go. She said she had planned on auditioning next year as she didn't think she was ready, but went ahead this year because it probably wouldn't run next year. She was in Salt Lake City to tryout and seems to be knowledgable about the whole process.

I think maybe they've tapped into such great talent that they can't keep upping the show anymore. After all, the ones who try out now and make it on the show are more often seasoned dancers or unique personal styles -- no longer are they unknown "new" talent if they have training.

Kind of like American Idol. The only kids who get on now must have years of stage experience to do well, and even then it can hurt them. Kids train FOR the show. And even though the talent is bigger, the show doesn't do as well because the "reality" no longer exists.

That was a great start to the competition. I decided as I started watching that I would limit myself to voting for three guys and three girls. In the end, I voted for Witney, Janelle, Eliana, George, Cole, and Will. It's hard to say who will go, since nobody did badly, really. For me the bottom three (times two) is Alexa, Janaya, Amber, Cheon, Nick, and I-don't-wanna-choose. (OK, reluctantly, Daniel.)

After voting, I read the FAQ at the web site. Next week, all the couples will practice and dance on the show. The judges will know the bottom three guys and girls before the show, and will take next week's performances into account before announcing the cuts at the end of the show. They didn't say whether or not they'll announce the bottom three at the beginning or the end.

I liked Cole and Amelia before last night, and now I'm sticking with Cole and will wait another week to see how Amelia will do with a serious dance effort and not something cutesy. There are sooo many good female dancers this season, and I tend to like the athletic types with shorter hair (girls with long hair that fling it around all the time irk me). Last year Melanie was my fave throughout the season...I'm hoping to see a gal this year get near to the high bar set by Melanie.

Still like Eliana and Cole a lot. The ballet dancer, whose name I couldn't remember, was Daniel. He didn't impress me last night as much as he must have earlier.

Eliana and Cole are my favorite dancers so far. Cole was unbelievable last night in that Paso Doble. He was fierce in that dance. I watched it twice and I couldn't take my eyes off of him even though his partner is gorgeous and it is her genre.

I feel badly for Eliana. I think she is the strongest girl and she is paired up with probably the weakest boy. So, the choreography has to be muted to enable Cyrus to dance the dance. Their dance was pretty good and surprisingly well done given how weak Cyrus' skills are at this point. I do agree that he has a lot of heart and the judges are rooting for him. However, Eliana may be at risk because of it. The good news is that the judges know it. I don't think they will let her go before Cyrus gets the boot. I really like that the judges pick who goes out of the bottom three instead of like what happens on American Idol. It ensures that the best talent stays on the show the longest.

For me, the worst performance was Alexa and her partner. The judges know it wasn't good. But, they didn't want to bash the choreography who was at fault for that bad performance. It was just too unnecessarily complicated and didn't give the dancers a chance to show case what they could do for the audience. I believe one of both of them will be at risk.

Overall, the dancers were excellent. I especially like Audrey in that second to last performance of the night with the chaise lounge chair. I forget the name of her partner. But, they were perfectly balanced. Great team. Should go a long way.

About the pairing of Eliana and Cyrus. I agree. But I look back a few seasons ago when Janine Mason (who went on to win) was paired with Phillip. I don't remember exactly what his genre was, might have been locking. But anyway, he couldn't dance. They even got some gosh-awful folk dance they had to do and even Nigel commented that they'd never do that one again. :hysterical: Janine managed to hang on, probably it was her dancing that kept Phillip on as long as he stayed. I'm hoping that if they don't shake up the pairings soon that Eliana will be able to continue to shine. But Cyrus is so darn likeable that I don't think he'll be leaving soon. :D

I'm going to be smug for a moment. :) Seeing Witney in the bottom three was a big surprise, but other than that, I got it exactly right. And it was easy to tell which two the judges would save.

This week's dances didn't really change my opinions much. Cole (great character!), Will, and George are still my top guys. Eliana and Witney are still among my top girls, though this week I'd replace Janelle with Amelia. For me, Amelia and Will were the best of the night.

The bottom? That's tough. The only guy who showed significant weakness was Cyrus, much as I like him. I agree with the judges that Lindsay wasn't as strong this week. Other than that, it's anybody's guess.

I'm looking forward to seeing Brandon and Amber together next week.
