Hi

found this ... http://blog.aeroplan.com/aeroplan/aeroplan’s-mileage-expiry-policies-explained/

see bottom part ...points die after 7 years ( and change happened in 2006-2007 ...so that time is coming up pretty fast ... .... if you are like me and collect and never buy anything with them .... they say they will e-mail details but waiting for 30 minutes ... maybe tomorrow ... but I think I know my answer ...time to buy some $100 gas cards for Esso

There - my good deed for the day ... now ... note to 'golf gods' ... can I PLEASE stop three putting ....

Greg

I think they expire after 1 year of no activities in the Aeroplan account, not 7 yrs.

Here is part of e-mail back from aeroplan ... boy -- are you going to be surprised ....

Thank you for taking the time to inquire about your seven-year mileage redemption status. We would like to take this opportunity to not only answer your mileage redemption question but to remind you about our mileage expiry policy.

they also have this link....

so - anyone believe me now ?

You are both right.

I remember when Aeroplan introduced the 7 year rule and my DW had her Aeroplan account expire due to no qualifying transactions in a 12 month period.

I normally carry a balance of a couple hundred thousand miles but I churn them fairly regularly so no fear of either one being an issue for me.

Even before the 7 year rule AC 'stole' about 80,000 FF miles from me for no activity and there was no way they would reinstate them at that time. The new managers of the plan will allow you to buy them back apparently.

However, in between I joined UA and have been a relatively happy camper with them, and used their Star Alliance association to book all my AC flights...as well as Lufthansa, Swiss, US Air, etc. as they fly out of Toronto too. I think all airlines have restrictions on FF miles now...apparently they have to carry unused miles as tax liabilities if they don't expire.

I still have some miles with AC and will probably lose some so thanks for the reminder, Greg. My complaint with AEP is that you rarely can get return non-stop tickets without giving up a huge increase in FF miles far in excess of Star Alliance levels and they release FF seats later than other airlines.

If you book *A flights you might want to join ANA's online FF site which lets you explore available FF seats. I find it easier to plan online and then call UA to book seats I saw as available.
