I am in the early stages of selling a timeshare for a family member. It is 2 properties, 1 week a apiece (5,000 pts each; 10,000 pts/year) forever. Any idea on how I should go about deciding on a price for them?

Talk to Seth Nock or Judy. They are the most reputable brokers out there. They would know what you could get, and they can save you a lot of time with paperwork, etc. Selling a TS is not that simple...plenty of horror stories when doing this on ebay. I have spoken to Seth a number times about TS issues. He is very knowledgable, fair, and a nice guy...a combination rare in this industry.

-Log into ebay
-search for the resort by exact name
-on the next page, click on COMPLETED AUCTIONS in the menu on the left
-that will tell you the actual current selling price

Brace yourself - most timeshares are selling for 0-10% of original retail.

5,000 points sounds like the standard two bedroom week during Gold Season

The resale price will depend on the destination. For example, an annual HGVC week in Orlando, South Beach and Vegas will have a much lower resale value ($5K to $8k). If you want to sell them quickly then I would price them at the low end of the scale.

You can look at the listings on Judi's and Seth's websites to get an idea on prices. Just keep in mind that these are asking prices.

Here's the link to their sites.
Seth Nock - http://www.sellingtimeshares.net/category/listings/hilton
Judi Kozlowski - http://judikoz.com/

TIP: Read this TUG thread on "How to Sell Your Timeshare (and avoid getting scammed!)" - http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44

Both Seth and Judi are highly recommended on TUG. I suggest using one of them to help sell your family member's timeshare.

Good Luck.

That might be true on eBay, but a serious buyer will want to actually purchase a unit at the Las Vegas Strip, requiring a price high enough to beat Right of First Refusal. eBay isn't the right place for a seller of certain weeks at the Las Vegas Strip due to the lower bidding prices ($9k or so for a platinum 2br) compared to what can be brought in on resale by an effective broker ($13,500). A broker will want a commission of course and it isn't cheap, but in the end you get your timeshare sold at the best price and avoid the potential for problems.

Bottom line: Plenty of people will bid on your unit on eBay, but Hilton will be the buyer in the end. With a broker, you'll get the price high enough for the buyer to end up with the week.

At least with HGVC, the ROFR supports resale prices to some extent. Rather than talking resale prices in the hundreds or even having to give a timeshare week away, HGVC weeks typically continue to sell in the thousands. Although you point is well taken that they sell for considerably less than developer pricing.
