We've had the same microwave for over 10 years and it's been on its last legs for a few years. The LCD screen quit working a few years ago (so we've just been flying blind) and the door sensor has been wacky for about a year (necessitating slamming of the door to get the microwave to work). It finally went out completely a few days ago and I ordered a new one from Amazon.
I got a Panasonic Genius Sensor 1250, a 2.2 cubic foot 1250 watt workhorse that got good reviews, only cost $127, and we got it the next day for $3.99 (since we are Prime members). (Our old one was 2 cubic feet and 1200 watts.) It had a bunch of newer features (probably old features to most of you). I've already tested out several and have been impressed.
It has sensor reheating. Just hit the button (and then Start) and it'll warm up whatever you put in there (at a reduced level) until it starts to steam. I hesitantly tried it with precooked bacon this morning. It looked slightly more done than I like when it finished, but was perfect.
It has an Inverter defrost mode. I always hated trying to defrost meat because it would cook the edges. This one claimed that it wouldn't. I tried it with some frozen chicken breasts. Basically, you just hit the Defrost button, enter the weight (in tenths of a pound) and hit Start. About halfway through, it stopped and asked me to turn it over. I did. When it was done, the three pieces were almost perfectly defrosted. The two bigger ones were slightly frozen in the middle and one had one edge that was slightly cooked, but WAY better than our old microwave would have done (and the new one was almost automatic!).
It has a bunch of other features (popcorn mode, preprogrammed cooking of various things, popcorn mode, etc.) that we haven't tried yet.
I was really impressed. Now if it's just last as long as our old one.
So, if you're using an old microwave that's on it's last leg, I just wanted to share that the new features introduced over the past 10 years really do live up to their hype!
