I was just contacted by a firm called DP Consultants out of Indiana. They are usiing DC Financing, a company they claim is out of VA. They claim to have a couple, the Jacksons, from CA who are willing to buy my 2 weeks of a timeshare. They just need me to send them $1800 security retainer, which I will receive back in full. They Deliver final contracts and Check for Purchase price....lets say $21000. I take that check to the bank. When It clears I call them and send the final contracts and signed deed. I get my $1800 back when they get the deed. Is it too easy? anyone dealt with security reainer before? Is this common?

It's a scam. Never send anyone money upfront to sell your timeshare.

Definitely a scam. Do not send them a dime. These companies are crooked and will never do a thing for you.

TOTAL SCAM!

There is a simple rule of thumb for dealing with timeshare business offers:

Any company that charges you a large upfront fee of any kind to sell or rent your timeshare, or to get your money back from another company, is going to scam you - period.

They make their money with the upfront fee and then they make no attempt to sell/rent your timeshare, or to get your money back.

Legitimate businesses charge a commission after the service, but the scammers all ask for a large upfront payment.

Here are some warnings signs with these kinds of companies:

1) Did you get an unsolicited sales call or mailing or email from them?

2) Do they say that they already have a renter/buyer for your timeshare? (Or an established market like people attending conventions.)

3) Do they claim that they can get your money back from another scammer?

4) Do they want you to pay hundreds/thousands of dollars for a title search, or transfer fees, or taxes, or a closing fee, or appraisal, or ANY large fee, UPFRONT?

5) Are they offering to rent/sell it for far more than the market value?

6) Do they want you to pay a large up front fee that supposedly you will get back?

7) Do they want your credit card number over the phone?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then this is the usual scenario:

Once you pay the fee and receive the contract, you discover that the company has only promised to advertise your resort, not to rent/sell it, and they don't mention having a renter/buyer in the contract.

Then, you won't hear anything from them for a long time, and when you contact them, they will tell you that the renter/buyer backed out, but they will advertise your timeshare on their over-priced website.

Finally, when you try to get your money back, they will point out that you signed a contract, and it's only for advertising.

When you try to challenge it with your credit card company, they will tell you that you only had 60 days to dispute the charge, and that it's too late to do anything.

This is a bitter pill to swallow, but right now, most timeshares are selling for 0-20% of the original retail price. It's not a good time to sell a timeshare.

To see what your timeshare is really worth on the current resale market:

1) Register with ebay
2) Sign in
3) Search for your resort by exact name
4) From the menu on the left click "completed listings"
5) The next page will show you current selling prices

(Be sure you look at the completed listings - those are actually SELLING prices - you will find asking prices all over the place, but what really counts is what they actually sold for.)

D P Consultants

D P Consultants Contacted us about our Bluegreen Timeshare, I doubt that too many people will ever hear of them, they are a consulting firm, and don"t deal in Timeshares, they were working on behalf of D C Finance the lender for the buyer, so you are all giving bad advice about something you don't know about, had we not decided to keep ours they were probably that one in a million real chance we would ever sell this, they are not an advertising company, and don't want a credit card, or payment to them. We had an offer from the Jackson's as they were buying 3 one for them and one for each of their grandchildren, but decided to keep it as our children decided they wanted it, and the jackson's didn't want the Wyndham. We have paid many marketing companies with great promises, but D P Consultants sent us an offer signed by the buyer and our Lawyer said the papers were all in order, and it was a written offer. We are also very angry about the marketing companies taking us for a ride, and an upfront front fee by credit card or check by phone, before you see any paperwork is a red flag, and if there is a real buyer they should be prepared to tell you who they are no excuses, AND they should have a written offer to present to you signed by the buyer or there is no real offer.

I don't believe 1 word of that.

Not for 1 minute.

Sheesh.

Very interesting that of all the timeshares in the world for sale, the two owners the Jacksons express interest to appear on TUG. I'm sure Timeshare Nightmares wishes he could have gotten here sooner to protect his scam.
I wonder if the Jacksons are happily vacationing now, and regret how much they overpaid.

You want everyone to believe that a legit "consulting" company is taking time out from their REAL business in order to make COLD calls to people with timeshares? How did they get yours and the OP's phone numbers and how did they know you had a timeshare?

Also, this other "finance" company is just too similar of a name to be a coincidence (DP Consulting versus DC Financing).

Timeshare nightmares, Be sure and let us know when the check clears the bank. Hundreds, if not thousands of us are just dieing to change our opinion of cold callers who want upfront payment. It would be a first. To say your post(s) are suspicious as well as your profile, is understatement.

you are all giving bad advice about something you don't know about

All the more suspicous - Timeshare Nigtmares is strongly defending this company and says everyone is giving bad advice about something we know nothing about. The FACT is that he himself claims that he did NO BUSINESS with this company. For someone who is "very angry about the marketing companies taking us for a ride" you either are a shill for this company or you are the most gullible person in the world. I would bet Mr. Jackson's three timeshares that you are a shill...

Would you pay a real estate agent his commission when he lists your house or at closing?

Same thing...

The same couple that want to buy g8sfanami's timeshare, using the same company, wanted to buy yours?

And you just happened to find this post?

Yea, sure.

The Jacksons

I just received a call from DP Consultants 2 days ago with an offer from the Jacksons in CA to purchase my resort deed in FL. Odd that this appears to be the same couple that was mentioned in an earlier post. I did receive a fax copy of a signed contract including a closing date. I would love to get rid of my property but feel that I would be out 2K that they are asking for and still have my annual taxes and maintenance fees due to not having a legitimate purchase from the "Jacksons". Any advice????

This is a common ploy - the reason the contract is from the same buyer is because there is NO buyer!

There is a simple rule of thumb with timeshare business offers: NEVER pay an upfront fee!

Please read all the posts in this thread - it says it all!
