I was sending a Paypal payment today and got a pop-up that said (paraphrase), "Now it's always free to send money from your Paypal Acct. when you use your bank account or PayPal account balance."

Kudos to Paypal!

Details:
How Much Does It Cost to Send Money?

To send money in the US, PayPal does not charge any fees when you send money with your bank account or PayPal account balance. When you use a credit or debit card, the cost is 2.9% of the total amount sent plus $0.30 USD per transaction.

Fees are based on recipient's country, whether you fund the transfer with your bank account or a credit card.

Stated again here - https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees

I'm not sure that anything has changed. If I'm receiving money for a "purchase" I still get hit with the normal fees regardless of the source of funds used by the buyer. If it's a "personal transfer", then the fees are waived for ACH or PayPal balance transactions. They define "personal transfer" as payments among family and friends.

Absolutely nothing has changed. It is exactly the way it has been since Paypal introduced the Personal transfer tab.

What exactly do you think has changed? Your long thread about how you sent the payment to the wrong email would result in EXACTLY the same outcome.

If you are saying that Paypal has now agreed to mediate disputes for personal transfers without a fee. Then that is news.

Note that I didn't say anything about "personal" payments.

I'm just reporting my experience on Paypal this morning - I got that pop-up as soon as I clicked on "send money." Before I chose a tab. I was surprised myself.

The payment window also looked different: it didn't have "purchase" and "personal" tabs.

If you look at the link I posted, you will see that it doesn't say anything about "personal" payments.

If I'm wrong - I was misled by Paypal, and I will report back ASAP!

I sent $10 to a friend as an experiment and I will get back to you with the results.

Can I be your friend?:whoopie:

I just clicked on the link and it says there is a difference between purchase and personal transfer.

Also, I just checked my account and tried to send a payment. It is exactly the way it was. A tab for personal and a tab for purchase.

Now, I have a business account. So, maybe that means by definition I need to choose between business and personal.

I also have a Premier, non-Business account. Sending funds still has the exact same Purchase vs. Personal tab.

Hmmm.....interesting..... I will let you know what happens regarding my $10 experiment.

Yeah, but you have to attend a 90-minute presentation. Be careful what you ask for.

Rofl, how much are the maintenance fees on that $10?

Now when I click on "send money" I don't get the pop-up...maybe you just get it once.... Hmmmmm.....

Boca - I understand the difference between the 2 types of payments.

But I got a NEW pop-up from Paypal this morning that stated something different and a different payment window.

I can't explain it - but that's what happened.

*I'm still waiting to hear from my friend regarding the fees.

Pop ups aren't unusual. What Paypal ought to do is provide a pop-up when sending money via a personal transaction. That's the bigger issue.

One more time - the payment window no longer had tabs for "purchase" and "personal" tabs - it was clearly a different payment window.

I can't explain it - but I know what I saw, and I looked it over very carefully, because I knew it was something different, and I wanted to report about it here.

Maybe it was a glitch, maybe it's something they are working on and didn't mean to go live with, maybe they just like me better, but I definitely used a payment window that did not differentiate between "purchase" and "personal."

This message is posted on the PP website- if it's not free - this sure is misleading!

Sending money with PayPal is easier than running to the ATM or writing checks.

New! Free for sender and recipient in the US when you send using your bank account or PayPal balance.

Low international costs—Use the calculator on the right to see your cost.

That is great news! I just checked my Paypal account and I still have regular vs. personal tab.. Paypal personal used to be free if you transfer using a bank account or paypal balance.. then they took that away and started charging regular fees under personal.. Now when I checked.. personal is free again!! :cheer: I had been keeping track as we transfer money monthly.. when they started charging for the personal I started transferring through our bank as they only charge $3 per transfer which was a lot cheaper than PP fees.. now free is even better!! :whoopie:

ScubaKat - Personal Payments have been free for quite awhile. Maybe that is what Paypal was promoting with their pop-ups, but is sure is misleading, because the pop-ups say it's something "new" and don't mention "personal" payments.

I'm still investigating.

My understanding is if you have a business account all payments you receive incur a fee even if it's personal. I tried to pay an Ebay reseller using a personal payment from my bank account and they were charged the same fee as if it had been a purchase or if I had used a credit card. Not sure if the same is true when you send money using a business account.

I have a business account and I can send and receive personal payments without a fee.

My "send money" screen still has the purchase or personal tabs, but it may not make a difference, at least not to the "sender." But label something a purchase and the "payee" still suffers a fee.
Quoting:

For Purchases:
Pay -- Free
Get Paid -- 1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30 USD (depends on sales volume)

For Personal Transfers...
Send or Receive --
-- Free when the money comes from PayPal balance or bank account.
-- 2.9% + $0.30 USD when the money comes from a debit or credit
card or PayPal Credit (the sender decides who pays this fee).

I am heading out the door but wanted to correct my error:

1. It was an old pop-up Ad from when they changed the rules about Personal Payments - even though it said "new" it wasn't new.

2. Although it didn't refer to "personal" payments at all - that's what it was referring to.

3. I saw a different interface than usual, because I saw the window that NON-Paypal members usually see.

Sorry to get your hopes up! My bad!

Yeah, but you have to attend a 90-minute presentation. Be careful what you ask for.

And it will prolly last 4 hours :hysterical:
