I remember there used to be an issue with doing this...sometimes you'd get lucky during late reservation periods, but in general, if you deposited a 1br you got a 1br

has this changed now that the TPU system has taken over? How do they handle it, can you only see 1br's in the TPU range you deposited or is everything available from 1br-6br as long as you have the right amount of TPU's?

I just signed up for RCI and haven't paid the $89 for the first year yet...or deposited anything, so i can't just check within the system

Trade ups have always been possible, not necessarily short notice. I have often gotten 3 bedrooms with our 2 bedrooms. I got a 3 bedroom with a studio too. That was an amazing exchange, because it was a Disney's Old Key West Grand Villa for late August.

I've only owned one bedroom or studios with RCI and except for the Manhattan Club, have never taken less than a two bedroom in exchange for my deposits. I'm only saying that to bring out that highly demanded smaller units have always been able to exchange into larger units with RCI - much easier than with Interval, in my experience.

I don't think the TPU system has changed anything. Highly demanded smaller units will pull larger units routinely - it's just that you now know going in whether it will work or it won't, basically. And yes, your premise is correct, if you have the right number of TPUs, you can get anything that you can see in the exchange pool. And you can combine your one bedrooms now, which is an option you didn't have before.

Hi Cindy,

I'm new to RCI and I'm trying to set up an ongoing request. I was thinking about requesting a 3bdr, but I was worried it would not go through. I'm curious did you request a 3bdr or find it in an instant exchange? Great trade!!

Deposited my 1 bdrmm this year and have a 2 bedroom this summer. No problems there. just depends on your points.

I know the TPU thing is a mess that is impossible to understand...But have we found that AVERAGE 2br places tend to have higher TPU values then AVERAGE 1br places?

Like there's no obvious division right? for example two bedrooms tending over 30 while one 1brs tend under 30? (Yah i'm aware of Manhattan club and 50-60 TPU's for a studio, but thats sort of an exception, right?)

DVC Grand Villas are rarer than rare, but I was able to pick that up with a studio before the changes.

I would say you need at least 30 TPU's to get a 3 bed DVC. But maybe it would take as few as 27 or 25 (who knows for sure?).

We have some deposits combined to total almost 100 TPU's, and ongoing searches with those have picked up no 3 bedrooms for any of my dates. I keep trying though, and entering a search months, even years in advance will give you the match before anyone else. Patience is key. I remember a TUGger entered an ongoing search for a 2 bed and got a 3 bed. He didn't even know what he got! That was Saratoga Springs! How I would love one of those!!!

IMHO, size is the least important criterion in determining TPU value. It's much more location and whether you have a time of year that is high demand. Of course, if you have the exact same resort, exact same week, there should reasonably be more TPUs given/required for a larger unit but I think the difference might be less than you might think.

And of course there are the vagaries that simply define RCI, which is why my studio that I would never consider staying in gets close to twice the points of my one bedroom unit that I personally would think is much more desirable on all counts - I don't understand it and I don't agree with it but their sandbox, their rules.

Again, I'm just going on my own personal experience/observations.
