Do you TAN before your vacation?

I was wondering how many Males and Females go to a Tanning Salon before going on their vacations?

:ponder:

With the high rate of skin canser in our families we try to avoid any tanning either before or during vacation. We have melanoma, basal cell, and squamous cell in near relatives and we've both had basal cell cancer. I'm really surprised that anyone still tries to get a tan because of this (not to mention the horrible leathery looking skin that the tanning bed gives you). Just my opinion.

+1 All the reports on tanning salons say that they are even worse for you than the sun....

No way...I slather on the sunscreen & wear a hat.

Ingrid

Me too! Our daughter had basal-cell skin cancer at 14 years old. She was the youngest skin cancer patient Kaiser Colorado ever had. Now there are a lot of them, so it's getting more common. So it's not a good idea to sun on purpose.

Other than my sister, her neighbors all did a jaw dropping "WHAT??? No way!" when asked whose birthday the cake was for lead to the question, "How old are you?"

So despite 2 summers as a fulltime lifeguard before sunscreen was invented (coppertone was a tanning agent), 2.5 years in Florida as a college student, several snowbird seasons in South Florida floating in the heated pool & hot tub, I get "shock and awe" among all her younger neighbors (5 of them) and who all look a decade older than I.

So, +2 on the NO TANNING done.

Been using SPF 30 or 50 for the last 10 years.

ADDED: Younger Sister by 6 years who lived 15 years in FL, last 15 years in TX, did not use sunscreen, and has inherited silver hair, passes for 15 years older than I (who does not color my brown hair).:hysterical:

No way!! Saw way too many people looking great from the neck down, but far older than their age due to tanning while living in Fla. Tanning beds are the worst, too, and they are even starting to do public service announcements against them in WA.

However, must confess that I forgot to sunscreen the lower part of my arms on first day out in HI on Friday and got burned. :( Even with full sunscreen, my DD's and I all got a little pink on our faces and shoulders as well. (and, yes, we did re-apply after an hour and were using full block) April HI sun is full on severe!! Yikes! We didn't get this bad last year on the big island, but somehow this time in the pool we got too much. We have been snorkeling in our rash guards since...

No tanning booths here, but have used sunless tanning lotion on my legs before. I was actually happy to not get a sunburn on my last vaca to the Caribbean this last winter, lots of sunscreen.

Nope. Lots of sunscreen for us. We are both of N.European ancestry and have very little melanin. Pasty white is OK. Pink is not. Red is worse.

Never been in a tanning salon in my life and don't ever expect that I will ever go to one.

When we go to Hawaii for example, I just lather up on sunscreen and sit and swim till I am well done! :D

Used to - was tempted for our trip to Vegas for DD's wedding but nope.

I do love the sun though and usually come home looking like I've been away.

Permanent tan -- born w/it, no need to.:)

Another one for no tanning. I came back from 2 weeks in Hawaii and had no color any place except for the part in my hair. I slather on sunscreen on vacation ... and every day. I put on SPF 30 30 minutes before I leave the house every morning.

Nope, no tanning in a booth or with the sun for me. I spray on sunscreen and stay in the shade.

I certainly don't tan. My wife attempted it about 8 years ago before a vacation. Her body had such a reaction to it that she had to go get a prescription for a steroid cream.

Plus, do you really want to look like Donald Trump? Watch the Celebrity Apprentice lately. He's a crazy shade of orange.

I have never been in a tanning salon in my life, but my friend Barbara does as her Dr said it was good for psorisis (sp) and that people with psorisis for some reason don't get skin cancer? Sounds weird to me.

Now, on the other hand. I am a sun tanner. I was a lifeguard for many years and lived at the lake growing up. Luckily I have my Mom's skin and I don't burn. My motto has always been tan fat looks better than white fat:D No one believes my age either. I do recommend Bullfrog tho, I still get dark and even the fairest of skin will not burn. It stays on and does not come off in the water.

Judging by the responses here, I sure wouldn't invest the family fortune in tanning salons. Not that I was planning to.. :) Jim

I have a friend that goes to tanning, not to get a tan but because she has the seasonal thing and with the rainy winters here, it really gets to her. Her doctor said too that it's good for her, just a little bit to get the light, I guess.

When people warn me about tanning, I tell them I'll be a better looking corpse!!

I have never used a tanning salon in my life and never will. I get enough sun all year to be reasonably tanned though it is not my intention to get a tan.

No tanning booths for me either but I love to be in the sun on vacation. We're on our second week in Hawaii and I am pretty dark now. I guess it is good that it is only a couple of weeks per year.

I'll admit it!

It would seem I'm one of the bad guys. Actually, my wife and I both tan before going to Mexico for two weeks in February. The sun, when it shines in Indiana, is not quite as intense as it is that far south. We do it, tan, usually that one time a year. I'm fairly dark skinned and we have no cancer history of any kind in my family, so I never worry about it. It beats being red as a lobster on vacation, and it makes me ready to enjoy the beach and pool, as that is why I'm going. Don't go to a salon though. We have our own bed that I bought used for a cheap price and refurbished it myself. We spend less overall that way, because we live so far from anywhere and can enjoy the privacy of our own home. If it doesn't stop raining here soon and the sun doesn't return I may use it just to get rid of the blah's:)

I used to go tanning prior to all my trips to Mexico as well as in between (for about 6 years). I love having the color when I arrive and don't have to spend all my time in the sun/heat (more time at the palapa or pool bar drinking margaritas). The best part is no tan lines!! But I stopped about a year a go due to the skin cancer concerns and I'm debating if I should go this week to get ready for my next trip. I also look much younger than my age, and my dermatologist told me 'just don't burn'. So I'm going to continue to tan before a vaction, but not try to maintain the color all year. I'm also going for annual skin checks now to monitor the damage I may be doing. I think that's a good compromise - at least it works for me.
