My husband and son are flying into Dulles on Saturday for several days touring Civil War & historical sites.

They are picking up a rental car on arrived on Saturday at Dulles. Before driving into Gordonsville, VA, they'd like to spend Sat afternoon on the National Mall. Any tips on where they could park the car near a Metro station? He'd prefer not to drive & mess with parking and traffic.

Thanks for any tips.

Tips about historical sites in the area would be welcomed, too, though I'm sure he has a list longer than he can handle already :)

Others more knowledgable than I should be along shortly...

However, I'd say park at one of the Virginia Orange line stations that have commuter lots: Vienna, Dunn Loring, West + East Falls Church. They are a part of the I-66 corridor into D.C. The Orange line goes to the Eastern Mall area (Smthsonian to Capital South). See the Metro map here... http://www.wmata.com/rail/maps/map.cfm

Thanks!

I appreciate the input.

think the bags will be safe in the trunk at one of these commuter lots?

Yes. These stations are located in fairly affluent suburbs, well-maintained, and there's a good flow of traffic thru them. At the website above, you can get info and a map for each station.

I stayed last November at the Courtyard across the street from the Dunn Loring station. Parking is free in that station lot on weekends, and it's right off I-66 and I-495, which you'd take south toward Gordonsville. Easy access from Dulles. Bring your GPS. There was a lot of freeway construction on I-495; not on Saturday, of course, but lots of lane adjustments and narrowing, etc. I don't know if that's still going on.

If someone knew about parking a little closer in, like Pentagon, you'd have a slightly shorter train ride.

We are staying at the Ritz Carlton Hotel @ Tyson Corner, McLean,Virginia next weekend. Can we drive to Dulles Airport and catch the orange metro line to Washington,DC?

No. The Orlange line does not go to Dulles. You'll have to drive South, to the Dunn Loring or Falls Church stations along I-66. See the map... http://www.wmata.com/rail/maps/map.cfm
