My personal theory is that the axis has shifted to slightly more of an angle. That would put us more directly in line with the sun in the summer (hotter), and more out of line in the winter (colder).
I guess the weather is unusual. That is why the linked article discusses it and quotes a source that cites La Nina as a potential cause. If you are a weather buff, you will be interested.
I'm enjoying the weather right now. We usually are below zero or near it in January, but it has been rather pleasant around 20 degrees most days. We get a few inches here and there. I suppose we will get blasted in April/May just to compensate, though...
