Were going on the Carnival Dream on march 12-19th. I can buy 480 minuites of internet time on my laptop or i pad. Has anyone used skype on their computer while on a ship? If so how did it work?

Thanks,
Rod

We were on a cruise to Norway last July and on the return in the middle of the North Sea I got an email from American Express confirming that I'd ordered a new card - which I definitely had not done. I used Skype to call their Customer Service to straighten it out. The call went fine and the issue was resolved. Keep in mind that you'll need to put money on your Skype account so that you can call regular phones (cell or land line).

On the cruises we've been on, internet time has cost $.50 to $.75 per minute, and the connection has not been fast enough to even make a marginal Skype call. Barely better than dial-up. Your experience may differ, but I saw much room for improvement. Once in a while I have made an unsecured wi-fi connection when in port, but that's getting more scarce too.

I agree with Passepartout. I have just used internet cafes' in port for email once my "freebies" are used up.

I have just gotten a smartphone with unlimited data and reasonable overseas data roaming charges so I will be using that in the future. It also has a Skype App.

Cheers

Just be careful that it doesn't connect to the ship's cellular network. This can cost a bundle. Just the periodic 'automatic' message checking triggers billing your phone. You don't even know it until you get your next phone bill. Jim
