Add resale points to existing VIP status

It would not. Your status is account based. So while you will get your new points added the ability to also be VIP points, you can NOT increase VIP level with the addition points.

I am Platinum and have occassional considered adding some resale points, as they are so cheap. Those resale points will get treated like all other points I have. If I were Gold, adding those points would not change me to Platinum, but otherwise points are points, and your ACCOUNT has the status not individual point packages.

Wyndham VIP upgarde of resale points

I have 426,000 resale points and up to now have not been interested in anything that Wyndham has offered to upgrade to “full” membership. This past weekend one salesman offer to upgrade all my points to full VIP membership if I bought 28,000 points from Wenham, about $7,000. I’m considering it, especially if he can give me a written confirmation that I can also upgrade to gold even with resale points. Is the full perks-Plus-VIP worth it? We mostly use up our Wyndham points on Wyndham resorts although sometimes have a few left over and put into RCI.

For starters, an extra 28K would not get you to gold; you'd still be shy of the 500K needed.

There have been varying reports of these sorts of equity swaps working in the past. I'll let others comment, but I would tread very carefully.

I know that the 28,000 wouldn’t get me to gold but the salesman told me that any additional points that I bought on resale would be counted towards “gold” I sort of doubt this and told him that I wouldn’t buy unless I got it in writing, also doubt that he’ll be able to do this, but even if it doesn’t, would the VIP, full membership be worth it even if I couldn’t get to gold with resale? Has anyone else gotten an offer like this?

You could purchase some additional resales first to get you closer to the VIP Gold level. However, I would INSIST on VIP being written into my contract.

I did an equity trade, PIC'ed two weeks, and got Partner Plus, and got VIP Platinum with a single purchase from Wyndham. My previous 4 Wyndham purchases were NOT from Wyndham directly. But were all in my account before I did the equity trade.

He most likely is talking about including a 18 months of Bonus Points - giving you temporary VIP Gold. It is one of their very popular HOOKS.

At one Wyndham sales site, you buy some regular points and you can opt an additional purchase for a resale converted fixed week deed for $2500.

But the most important thing is: YOUR 426,000 resale points would have to be washed. To do that, you would need to trade in that deed(s).

I guessing that what I was being offered was an equity exchange. I would have to buy minimum developer points, in this case 28,000, in order to roll the points into VIP. From some other posts that I have read, if I want to make the VIP gold, I should buy the necessary points resale to make up 500,000 and then tell the salesperson that I want to do an equity exchange and ask for the minimum # of points I need to do it. Anyone have experience with equity exchange? What's the downside other than overpaying for the developer points?

Get it in writing is the rule. I ensured that VIP Platinum and Plus Partners was included in the deal in writing.

I did an equity trade for a number of reasons. I knew a big special assessment for Santa Barbara was coming so I opted out of paying and used that for the equity trade. I did pay too much compared to open market, but I didn't have to pay for full VIP Platinum and Partner Plus, I got both with the deal. It made sense for me, but I bet it will not make sense to others. I wanted to get 50% off and free upgrades at 60 days because 2/3 of my bookings are in this time period, so there was a big incentive to make points go much farther for me. It may not be that way for everyone.

They have eliminated the unlimited free guest certs and started charging huge amounts for them, luckily I usually have plenty of free guest certs to plus I changed my way of booking them. I used to get them as soon as I made a booking, now I just wait until 3 weeks prior to checkin. That way if I cancel something no guest certificate would be wasted.

In the end you need to decide what you are willing to pay for. For many the math just doesn't make any sense from the developer, under any circumstance. For me it did for what I got and got out of.

Never very good way to go

The downside, besides the brushed-off WAY overpaying for developer points that are worth 95% less a few days after you by them, is that neither the VIP itself or the "benefits" it offers have an guarantees. None. The whole program could be shut down tomorrow and you have zero recourse. Why would anyone pay for stuff that cannot be resold, has no guaranteed value and costs an arm & a leg? It is all sales BS and you'd be throwing your money away. Obviously I advise against doing any retail purchase. No exceptions. Use 1/4 of the $7K that would get you only the most base of VIP for another 150K in points resale and you'll get the use for far less and the value is both resell-able and fa cheaper. Never pay retail for Wyndham points.

My deal from the developer was half UDI "regular points" and half converted fixed weeks for gold VIP at 40K. This was from a sales location no longer open.

I am probably a rare case in that Gold VIP is worth it to me because I am retired, have 6 Wyndham Resorts ranging 12 miles to 120 miles away, take lots of short "get aways" with my wife on short notice with lots of discounts, upgrades "like presidential suites" with lots of changes to reservations throughout the year as I see better bargains. I like to search for discounts and upgrades regularly. I make good use of the unlimited transactions and HK fees under Gold VIP

Would I pay the full sticker price for Gold VIP? No.

Would silver VIP work for me? No

Would I buy resale moving forward to add to my VIP Gold account? Yes, especially if I find that my travel patterns begin to require more reservations that require booking more than 60 days out with little chance of upgrades as the 45 day upgrade window approaches. I would also before adding more points keep in mind affordability of MF's moving forward since I do not plan on going back to work
Would I do it again? Yes, it's my retirement toy, retired 2 years, married 4 years where these travel experiences and weekend get aways are helping to make this season of my life one of the best ever.

Again this is my personal preference/opinion and likely applies to few others which is why I typically do not chine in when the VIP not ever worth it counsel is presented. I agree for most it is not worth it and do not want to risk remotely advising VIP for anyone who is not able to pay cash, travel on short notice and cannot take the financial/emotional “hit” if VIP benefits are ever reduced further.

I really love my membership at Wyndham and on TUG

Thanks,
Ira

Thanks for this reply. You sound a lot like me as a user so you input is especially valuable. Right now I only have Points Plus and can’t do much beyond booking Wyndham units for myself which has been great and I feel I have gotten my money’s worth out of the purchase of 426,000 points resale plus MF. If I can really upgrade to full owner benefits and VIP for only $7,000 it seems like a good deal. Getting Gold by buying another 77,000 resale would be icing on the cake.

Get it in writing or walk. No exceptions. None.

If you decide to move on the "deal" be certain to get every promise you are depending on to get back your value IN WRITING. Otherwise you are almost certain to be in for disappointment. Please heed that if nothing else about the lack of value for VIP you feel seems to apply to your case. Having things in writing applies to everyone and every case.

You are being played. Prior years the sales staff pros would have kick you out; sales are down and the weasals still left working, are very good at running the con on owners.

Hang around here (at TUG) and read more posts about the Wyndham sales staff tactics.

I would be interested in how this pans out.

I was at Bonnet Creek in Nov and they did not offer me this.

Only thing they mentioned was PIC a non-Wyndham TS. They tried to apply pressure by saying, if you PIC today, they would allow 2 TS and if I waited until 2011, only one week would be allowed.

Not sure if that's the case or not.

Then they offered me foreclosed Wyndham points, but I would have to buy too many to get to Gold VIP, so I walked.

VIP can be worth it depending on how you will use it and the price. Any resale purchases after your retail purchase will not count towards VIP.

Good luck on that. I had such an offer a few years back but when it came to giving it to us in writing (as promised that evening), they seemingly were no where to be found so we rescinded before leaving the resort.

Well, it seems that if I can get what the salesperson promised in writing that it’s probably worth it, at least to me. Now I’ll have to wait to see what he comes back with. I left the sales office with a promise that he would get back to me.

In fairness, he was very good about researching and giving me truthful answers when I press him on it. He was actually the first Wyndham salesperson that I have met who seemed to understand that having bought resale; I probably wasn’t going to buy anything from him if it wasn’t a good deal. He also seemed to appreciate that it wasn’t anything personal, but I’m not going to buy anything if it’s not in writing. Problem is, his manager may not see things the same way. I’ll let you know how things turn out.

You will not get future resale purchases will bump you up to VIP Gold. writting. If you do happen to get it in writting then I would run even faster.

Any update? Just wondering how everything turned out.
