It's not particularly new; the Central Florida Expressway authority has been selling a transponder that works more or less everywhere east of the Mississippi for a few years now. I bought one in 2019.

Thanks, just ordered a new one to replace my older sunpass transponder.

Wonder if this covers the causeway toll to Sanibel?

Haven't been in FL for a couple years, but welcome news that I can use EZPass next time I visit (whenever that is).

We are from the the northeast and more roads are eliminating cash lanes and you have to either use EZpass or Toll-by-plate at roughly three times the rate. With all the EZpasses up here having monthly fees and after much research we went with the Florida CFX UNIpass... 18 states, no monthly fees, works on SUN and CFX in Florida, Parking at MCO, and all EZpass states... This new SUNpass offering looks and sounds similar to the CFX UNI which came first but was originally called Epass Xtra and launched in Fall of 2018...

It does.
But here's a story from WINK News that suggests you may need to check your charges:

You could be overpaying at Lee County tolls with SunPass

James Greenhaw and his wife travel across the Sanibel Causeway on occasion. But when he went through a non-express lane, he was flagged down for overpaying. Greenhaw said the attendant at the toll booth told him SunPass charged him too much – twice as much.

“Four times in our van and four times on my motorcycle. Every single time on my motor scooter they charged me $6 instead of $2 and all four times on the van, they charged us $12 instead of $6,” he said about the SunPass issue.

SunPass told Greenhaw it’s only $2 if you stop and pay cash for a motorcycle. If you use SunPass, then its $6. Something he said nobody ever told him when he signed up for the program. SunPass tells WINK News the transponders don’t distinguish between cars or motorcycles, automatically charging the more expensive car toll.

Greenhaw says he’s not using SunPass anymore when driving his motor scooter over the causeway. But still, he’s waiting for an explanation why they also charged his van twice the toll cost. One possible explanation was given to Greenhaw. “She says someone must be following you close. I say every time I go through? Makes no sense whatsoever,” he said.

SunPass is refunding Greenhaw for the motorcycle issue.
Now, as you travel through those tolls, you may want to double check what you’re being charged.

We have been using EZ pass when it first came out. We used it everywhere from NY to California, drove around the country, and to Key West, Florida. Never see a monthly fee on our EZ Pass bill. It worked on all other states’ local pass.

I know most of the midlantic states have a monthly cost including NY,NJ, and PA.... What state is your pass from?
EZpass lists about 17 states it works in and Illinois was the furthest west until recently when Minnesota was added... it shouldn't work in California.
Also I thought Florida did not work with EZpass until maybe at the latest 2018... when did it work in Key West?

Here is a link to the EZpass map https://e-zpassiag.com/about-e-zpass/where-can-i-use-it

Cash toll plazas are a thing of the past in South Florida. Say goodbye to the last few on Florida's Turnpike.

If you click on the Home button for this site, you will see a news item that Florida was added. (The Home links to a letter stating that as of May 18, you can use EZpass in Florida.)

The unknown for me. I have an IPass (Illinois' version of the EZPass). It works at all EZPass booths. Will it also now work at a Sun Pass booth?

CFX was selling the Epass Xtra (now UNIpass) in Fall of 2018 that was for Florida CFX roads AND EZPass up north. Now it looks like they are trying to bring in all of Florida.
I was trying to address you have to be careful of the fees... the CFX new UNIpass has no monthly fees and includes EZPass.
CCWU stated they got their EZPass from the start and have used it in Florida (Key West) and from NY to California with no fees....
I was wondering which state this was issued from because California is still not listed for EZPass and as you stated, Florida was just recently added. Also most Northeast states have fees of $12-$18 a year, billed monthly.

I'm confused by assertions about Northeast states having fees for EZPass. We have EZPass from New Hampshire and pay no fees. Our balance replenishes every so often, but that is quite different from a fee.

Here are few sites to show comparison of fees... it does look like New Hampshire is no fees (except for printed bills if you opt for them)

Then you have to see if the states extra fees are offset by the state you use it in, because extra discounts apply only to the state the EZpass was issued.

This article is how NJ EZPass fees chew away your account...

Hope that helps...

It helps Peter. Thanks. Our experience with NH is quite pleasant. Massachusetts had some other system and that was, well, so bad it caused us to slip across the state line and get EZPass.

Our NC issued pass doesn't have a monthly fee (just a one-time fee when you get it,) and you just have to set a replenishment amount. They periodically review if that's "enough," and can increase/decrease it based on average use. When we drove to PA, and then to IL, and then back to NC over Thanksgiving, they decided to review using the period of Oct/Nov.....and then increased our "replenishment" amount. But in the end, it worked out; they just reviewed again, realized we hadn't really used it much, and adjusted it back down.

Ironically, we *never* use it in NC....only to drive between here and either my daughter's school in PA, or my mother in ME, or the places in between where we meet, LOL. ;)

I live in Ohio, but own a NC Quick Pass becuase unlike the Ohio EZPass there is no monthly fee, and at the time I bought it- it was the only one that worked for all the EZ Pass states plus NC, GA, and FL. I have used it in Florida several times and also in a couple of the EZ Pass states, but never in NC.

When you say EZPass are you referring to the Pennsylvania EZPass?? Could it be used in Florida. I'm from PA and would love to use my EZPass in FLA.
