Hello!

My family has been coming to the Poconos (Shawnee) since the early 70's. In 2005 Wyndham bought out Shawnee, but my family kept the deed to the week of the original timeshare and never converted to the points system. Unfortunately, my mother passed away and now I'm going to inherit the timeshare from my grandparents. We met with Wyndham and they offered us 140,000 points for the week, but we would have to buy 64k of points at a cost of $13k-ish. What are our options? We would like to come back to Shawnee, but not every year as we live in Indiana now. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

No need to pay Wyndham anything at all. You don't need your interval in Wyndham points, you can open an account with RCI and exchange it.

That's what I thought, however Wyndham said they now own RCI and we cannot exchange because we're not Wyndham owners?

IMHO, I would not choose not to inherit the timeshare or see if it had resale value (I will bet it doesn’t).

If you want the flexibility of points, you should buy a good points RCI Trader or a Wyndham trader. The Poconos will be an easy trade, and you will not need to own there to trade in.

If you decide to keep it, depositing into RCI as described above is the way to go. You can then trade it for a week you want or go somewhere else.

Lies. I wouldn't take that "free" timeshare. Buy something better.

I do not believe that is true, but if it is … I would let them take it back rather than inherit it.

Thanks! Not taking it from my Grandparents isn't an option. I just don't like the thought of paying a maintenance fee and not using the week if we can't make it back to PA. If we can still use RCI, that would be great. Can you convert this timeshare into a points system from what I'm understanding or am I mistaken?

Why is it not an option?

It would break their hearts to not take it. It's a $300 fee to transfer it to my name and keep it private (not in Windham points). Still for $900 maintenance fees for 7 days in the Poconos isn't bad imo.

Thanks for all the info!

Look, You can pay the transfer fee $300 and keep the TS. The MF of $900 is really good. You can join RCI and trade it ( salesman lied about not being able to)

BUT the TS has little to no resale value and you'll have to pay a fee to RCI to join and a yearly fee to be a member.

This will be the only chance to refuse the inheritance and get rid of the TS if you don't want it.

Good Luck

I took your original post literaly, and thought you were dealing with their estate. It is great news you still have your grandparents! It is less great you may get stuck with the timeshare. Wyndham Ovation (internal exit program) [see correction in post below] is likely the best solution here. But if you take other actions, I get it.

Wyndham Exit wouldnt apply because it isnt a wyndham contract.
