Been researching various options for sale and can't seem to find a definite answer to this question.

Can you use your Wyndham Club membership points to book regular hotels in the Wyndham family?

Maybe, but even if you could you would not want to---the conversion rate will not be favorable. In my experience, the only "good value" way to use Wyndham points is either booking Wyndham resorts internally or (in some cases but not all) depositing to RCI for exchange.

The short answer is no. They have certain wyndham hotels designated as affiliated that may on very rare occasions appear online to book using vacation points but they don't have any set inventory or appear on any kind of regular basis. There is also a way to convert future year points to hotel points if you bought retail. There is a fee and the conversion rate is not particularly advantageous.

Do you need to purchase direct from Wyndham Destinations to have this option, like Marriott and Vistana require?

Yes, but what I am not sure about is if you have both retail and resale if you are limited to the amount of retail only. To use club pass it is your retail points only. I think (but don't know for sure) that converting to hotel points has to do with having plus partners, for which you pay a slightly higher program fee per point for all your points not just the retail points.

... don't forget using Wyndham points to book Wyndham resorts internally, insisting on a high number of Wyndham Rewards points for attending owners' updates/sales presentations, and then using those to book Wyndham hotel stays....

Here are links to the two programs that allow for use of CWP points with hotels, both of which are only eligible when using retail/developer purchased points:

  • When confirming PlusPartners reservations, you may use up to the amount of points owned including points associated with Bonus contracts.
  • *Attraction tickets are not obtainable through advance purchase. Tickets may be purchased during your reservation using points by calling 407-204-8291. Tickets will be sent immediately via email.
  • You may rent additional points needed for Travel Partners at a cost of $12 per 1,000 points during the Express reservation window.
  • Borrowing points is not an option for PlusPartners Travel Partners.
  • Taxes and fees are not included in point totals unless otherwise advised and are collected at the time of redemption.
  • There is a nonrefundable $59 fee per PlusPartners reservation.
  • You will be charged a $25 fee when changes to your reservation are requested after confirmation.
  • Cancellation policies vary based on the individual partner and may include 100% forfeiture of points.
  • Eligibility Requirements: Membership in PlusPartners requires a separate enrollment. Additional enrollment, program assessment and transaction fees apply. Membership in the PlusPartners Program is not transferable upon the subsequent sales or transfer of your ownership interest, whether by private sale or resale company, unless the sale or transfer is by will or interstate succession, or to an “Immediate Relative.” An “Immediate Relative” currently includes: parents, spouses, domestic partners, siblings, children, and grandchildren.
  • Qualified points must be Club Wyndham points associated with ownership interests purchased directly through Wyndham Vacation Resorts, Inc. or its affiliates.
  • Bonus Points, PIC Plus points, and points placed into a future Use Year using the Points Deposit Feature are not eligible to be converted.
  • A $99 nonrefundable conversion fee is required.

I was right there with you until this part....

It's hard to imagine a number of points that would be worth that!

I never said I disagreed with the underlined part of your post. Holds true for this conversion method, too....

For 60k WR points - that's either four nights in a 15k/night hotel or two nights oceanfront at 30k/night - at hotels that typically charge $350-500/night over weekends - it's worth an hour of our time to get a free weekend stay somewhere, especially when we're staring at the ocean from the hotel balcony. YMMV.

Following this thread. Had been trying to get this answer myself, for a while now.

To add to the initial question, are there any programs that are good for mixing timeshare/resort stay AND hotel stays?

What do you mean when specifically? Can you give an example? I'm assuming you mean mixing stays for a vacation across multiple properties. For example, could you use the same system to book two nights in hotels on the way to a timeshare destination for a week, then two more hotel stays on the way back home. I don't believe Wyndham offers any such program, but it's not hard to do this really - we use our Wyndham Rewards program points to book hotels when we want, and we use our CWP program to book timeshare stays. Since the Wyndham timeshares and hotels are managed by two disparate companies, I don't believe an integrated booking mechanism would ever come to fruition.

Correct, mixing short stays at hotels and weekly stays at resort, using points for either/both. Didn't realize Wyndham timeshare and hotels are managed separately.

Not just managed separately - two separate companies as of a few years ago - both listed on public stock exchanges separately. Wyndham Destinations - now becoming Travel & Leisure - is the timeshare company. Wyndham Hotels is an entirely separate company as well. The only integration the two offer is via Wyndham Rewards - or what the salespeople often refer to as Blue Thread.

Which one is it that's managed correctly...?

In your case, you may want to look at Marriott Destinations for short stays and Club Wyndham for longer stays. Marriott has higher maintenance fees than Wyndham, but their points system has unlimited housekeeping, so the length of your stay is irrelevant. Only paying attention to cost per night, it makes sense to use Marriott DC trust points for short stays and Club Wyndham points for longer stays. If you do a lot of short stays with Wyndham, you end up having to pay a housekeeping fee that Marriott doesn't have. Wyndham is about 25% cheaper than Marriott for equivalent weeklong stays.
